DISPATCHES FROM BERNIE SANDERS’ VERMONT: The idyllic northeastern state being ravaged by drugs, crime and homelessness: ‘People don’t feel safe.’
Downtown areas of Burlington and Brattleboro, among other cities, were too dangerous to walk at night, following reports of passers-by being attacked by thugs, locals told DailyMail.com.
Some blame the crises on costly social programs in a Democrat-leaning state that has Bernie Sanders as a senator and gave President Joe Biden a 36-point landslide win in 2020.
‘People don’t feel safe going into the cities anymore,’ small business owner and Republican candidate Mark Coester told DailyMail.com.
‘They can walk down the street and visibly see people with needles stuck in their arms. Our towns and cities are suffering, and now the feeling of hopelessness is only getting worse.’
Vermont’s problems are on display in Burlington, its largest city, with some 44,000 residents, including some 350 unhoused people living on the streets or camped out on the idyllic waterfront of Lake Champlain.
Many of them congregate at night in Church Street, the beloved red-brick home to boutiques and eateries, ravaged by such drugs as fentanyl and xylazine, also known as ‘tranq,’ scaring off locals.
Residents recently told Fox News that the area gets ‘really dangerous’ at night.
An older woman remarked that locals don’t step foot in the area after dark because ‘people get beat up at nighttime.’
Since the end of August, Burlington police have been warning residents of the need to be on guard, after a string of attacks by ‘large groups of suspects and perpetrators,’ which included juveniles.
David Brooks could not be reached for comment.

What if Michelle Obama had been the nominee instead? Sheâs never shown interest in going through the wringer of running for office, but nobody else could so easily have unified the party as an emergency substitute, and she could effortlessly have run more as a third Obama term than a second Biden one.
Thatâs a separation Harris hasnât managed. If Barack Obama is worried about his legacy, perhaps he would have been better off keeping it in the family.

This is how low Democrats think of their supporters: they dangle the promise of a BeyoncĂ© concert just to trick people into watching her DNC acceptance speech or attending her rally! Imagine showing up, thinking youâre about to hear BeyoncĂ© do a small concert and perform âFreedomâ live as a segue into Kamala’s appearance, and then realizing you were duped. This tactic says a lot about their lack of confidence in Harrisâs own star power.
Beyond the crowdâs anxiety over a lack of performance, is team Kamala marshalling the superstars who have endorsed her well? As Erick Erickson tweets, âNot that anyone asked me, but I’d have sent Springsteen to Texas and Beyonce to Georgia.â

Whose fault was it?
That of course is going to be the overwhelming question Democrats will be asking themselves after Kamala Harris loses on November 5.
It is worth stressing that a question can also be an accusation. Cicero reminded us of this in his first oration against Catiline, which opens with more than half a dozen questions spat out like bullets from a Gatling gun. Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra? âHow long, Catiline, will you go on exhausting our patience?â Quam diu etiam furor iste tuus nos eludet? âAnd how long will that madness of yours mock us?â
The biased circus concession that we call much of the media has an interest in drawing out the festivities surrounding an election. So in the case of Trump vs Harris, the answer to Ciceroâs questions is âas long as possibleâ.
âThe race is neck and neck, itâs just so close, it could break either way.â But by mid-October, everyone knew that the race was not close. Harris finally sat for a few interviews â with 60 Minutes, with Bret Baier, for example. They were catastrophes one and all. It did not help that CBS later edited Harrisâs response to make her sound more coherent and then refused to release the unedited transcript of the exchange.
Harris held a âtown hallâ where she was supposed to answer audience questions off the cuff. But some alert spectator noted that Harris at least appeared to be reading answers off a teleprompter. More embarrassment.

The non-endorsement is the new endorsement! Hot on the heels of the Los Angeles Timesâs decision not to endorse a candidate in the presidential race, a controversial call made by the paperâs owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong that has been met with multiple staff resignations, the Washington Post is following suit.
A statement published Friday reads: âThe Washington Post will not be making an endorsement of a presidential candidate in this election. Nor in any future presidential election. We are returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates.â
Public statements from leading Post personalities have been aghast. Columnist Karen Attiah tweeted, âJesus Christ.â Then, an hour later, ââŠâ Then an hour later still, âWhat an absolute stab in the back. What an insult to those of us who have literally put our careers and lives on the line, to call out threats to human rights and democracy.â
Of most interest to Cockburn, however, were the remarks of fellow columnist and MSNBC mainstay Jennifer Rubin to the LA Times resignations earlier in the week. In response to Sewell Chanâs resignation from the Times, she wrote, âBravo. All respect.â Followed by, âand where are the rest of them?â
The implication is clear: now that her paper, too, is refusing to endorse the sainted Kamala Harris, Rubin must be set to join the charge of resignations in disgust, along with Robert Kagan, as a sort-of Potomac Joan of Arc. The prospect brings a tear to Cockburnâs eye. Such bravery.

Besides, it’s hardly a secret how the Post views Trump at least, if not Harris. They adopted their banner not after January 6, but just after Trump took office in 2017. Bezos owned the Post at that time too, and had used the slogan during the 2016 election before Trump had even formally won the nomination. It’s still on the masthead, and even as Bezos put it there, Allahpundit recognized it for what it is:
The timing gives the slogan the same effect as that dopey NBC News story from a few days ago noting that Trump would not, in fact, become the shortest-serving president in American history. Itâs a declaration of opposition to the new administration. If it wasnât, they would have slapped it on the front page back when Barack Obama, a.k.a. âthe greatest enemy of press freedom that we have encountered in at least a generation,â started snooping in journalistsâ phone records.
With all that as background, does the refusal to participate in endorsements really matter? It does to Lewis’ predecessor, Marty Baron, who called Lewis and Bezos cowards for refusing to participate:
Colleagues were said to be “shocked” and uniformly negative. Post corporate spokespeople have not responded to multiple messages left by NPR on the subject.
Former Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron, who led the newsroom to acclaim during Trump’s presidency, denounced the decision starkly.
“This is cowardice, a moment of darkness that will leave democracy as a casualty,” Baron said in a statement to NPR. “Donald Trump will celebrate this as an invitation to further intimidate The Postâs owner, Jeff Bezos (and other media owners). History will mark a disturbing chapter of spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.”

After more than a century, luxury chain Neiman Marcus has stopped calling its annual gift catalog the âChristmas Book,â instead opting to call it a âHoliday Book.â
The book was first sent out in 1915 as a card telling customers to visit Neiman Marcus for their holiday shopping, though the 2024 version is considered the 98th edition of the catalog, per a Neiman Marcus release.
The new name was adopted âin the spirit of inclusivity as it welcomes customers of all backgrounds, religions and traditions to celebrate the season,â a Neiman Marcus spokesperson told The Dallas Morning News*.
Some employees at the company are kvetching about the switch to âHoliday Book,â contending the name change was spurred by the preferences of executives.

GUYS, FIND ANOTHER PLOT: NBC’s Law and Order Portrays Pro-lifers as Terrorist Bombers.
Last night, NBC’s “Law & Order” portrayed pro-lifers as terrorist bombers who target IVF (in-vitro fertilization) practitioners.
In the episode, “The Meaning of Life,” on Thursday, an IVF doctor named Sarah Heartwood (Erica Sweany) is left in an irreversible coma after receiving a bomb-laden package.
Heartwood’s husband is a well-known atheist author. Law enforcement initially suspects the bomber is a Muslim plumber who attacked her husband at a book lecture. When the plumber provides an alibi, NYPD next arrests a black man who delivered the package. Of course, neither the Muslim nor the black man are the killer. The real killer turns out to be a “random white guy,” in the words of one of the detectives. Surprise!
I honestly had to check on the date of the above Media Research Center post, because this is remarkably old ground for Law & Order to be covering, dating all the way back to the ninth episode aired during the show’s first season — in January of 1991:
After an anti-abortion protester is killed in an abortion center bombing, detectives search for all of her potential co-conspirators.
Sgt. Grevey and Det. Logan investigate a bombing at an abortion clinic that resulted in the death of 22 year-old Mary Donovan who was using the clinic’s bathroom. In fact, Donovan was carrying false ID and it was she who used a basic pipe bomb to blow up the clinic. Donovan was a supporter of the Women for Life organization and the bomb materials are traced to Celeste McClure who likely made the bomb. They suspect Rose Schwimmer, head of the anti-abortion group of having ordered the attack. When they obtain startling new evidence, Schwimmer is charged with murder.
As the late Kathy Shaidle wrote in 2017, âFor years Iâve been âjokingâ that âMore abortion doctors have been murdered on Law & Order than in real life.ââ There may be “eight million stories in the Naked City” (oh wait, that was an even older Manhattan-based series with plots “ripped from the headlines”), but it isn’t the hotbed of Red on Blue violence that Dick Wolf needs it to be to keep ginning up the culture war.

Liz Cheney compared herself to “Winston Churchill standing up to [Adolf] Hitler” on Tuesday night when declaring her opposition to American airstrikes in Syria â the latest in a series of Liz-Cheney-thinking-rather-highly-of-Liz-Cheney moments. She was speaking to about 150 Tea Party members when she rejected President Obama’s call to strike Syria, calling his national security policy “amateurish.” It seems Obama is Hitler in this scenario. We might note that more often, Obama has been compared to another British politician, Neville Chamberlain, who appeased Hitler.

In a somewhat stunning turn of events, The Washington Post has declared that it will not endorse a presidential candidate in the 2024 election â nor will it do so in future elections. But…why now?

“Roots,” you say? When did things change? After reviewing the times when WaPo previously declined to endorse (1960, 1972), The Post added:
That was strong reasoning, but in 1976 for understandable reasons at the time, we changed this long-standing policy and endorsed Jimmy Carter as president. But we had it right before that, and this is what we are going back to.
The Post endorsed Joe Biden (and Kamala Harris) in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016.
On the heels of the Los Angeles Times’ decision earlier in the week not to endorse, this announcement is sure to send shockwaves through the political media landscape.
For some, it is the proverbial time of choosing:

ROGER SIMON: Even If Trump Wins, There’s a Long Road Ahead.
Donald Trump likes to tell us he can solve Americaâs demonstrable problems lickety-split.
There are many things he can do quickly, in days if not hours, by executive order. These include shutting the open border, to a great extent anyway, reinstating, even increasing, sanctions on Iran to cut the money flow enabling the mullahs and allowing domestic oil producers to drill, baby, drill. This would restrain Russian adventurism.
We can name several other improvements that could be done relatively easily, like ticketing the Department of Education for extinction and changing the comically âwokeâ leadership in our military. We can also get rid of the iffy voting machines and go back to paper ballots with one Election Day.
Itâs clear that Elon Musk, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard will have important roles. (Is Tulsi the first woman president?)
Others will return who have served well in the past with names like Kudlow and Grenell. The list is not short.
But looming over all this is another reality.
Kamala Harris, no matter what, will have received tens of millions of votes, perhaps won the popular vote.
These people all supported someone who is unable to answer the most predictable softball questions in anything resembling coherent English.

And yet millions and millions support her. Some of this is Trump Derangement Syndrome, some of it is being a Democrat by inheritance (everyone in my family always was) or habit (not all that different from smoking), some of it is from fear of losing a government job.
But some are drunk on tired ideology. We find this all over our schools, media and entertainment.
These people will make it Hell for their fellow Americans between Nov 5 and the inauguration on Jan 20. It could even lead to violence.
That interregnum wonât be the end of it either. This ideological infection is too entrenched. It has been going on a long time, since the days of Woodrow Wilson with a warp speed bump from the election of Barack Obama.

If Trump wants to put the forces of the swamp on the defensive, he should forget the foolish 100-Day agenda borne of the FDR/New Deal myth. Instead, he needs to start with some bold hammer blows on the afternoon of Inauguration Day.

MARTIN GURRI: Cuba Enters the Dark Ages.
On August 6, 1960, Fidel Castro nationalized the Cuban Electric Company and sent his minions to celebrate in the streets of Havana. The companyâs logo, a lightbulb-nosed stick figure nicknamed âCalixto Kilowatt,â was paraded around in a huge open coffin. I remember watching this revolutionary ritual on Cuban TV, a young kid frightened by the macabre imagery. Castroâs propaganda was never gentle or subtle.
Fast-forward to last Friday, when the electric grid in Cuba suffered a complete collapse. This is not an exaggeration or a metaphor. The entire island went darkâeven Havana, which has been protected from the worst of the recent blackouts. It was a civilizational breakdown. The economy quite literally ground to a halt, as factories and stores were ordered closed by the government. From elementary schools to universities, the educational system was put on pause. Hospitals turned people away. For three days, Cuba, already tattered and abused, entered a special circle of hell reserved for the most mismanaged nations on earth.
The material catastrophe is self-evident and can be measured empirically. The depth of human suffering is impossible to gauge from a distance. Without refrigeration, foodâalways hard to obtainâwas spoiled. Mothers lacked milk for their children. Without fans or air conditioners, everyone, including the very young and the very old, was exposed to Cubaâs blistering temperatures. Without elevators, the old and the sick who lived in apartments were forced to sleep outdoors, in the heat and among the mosquitoes. Without traffic signals, venturing to the streets became a death-defying nightmare. Without light, the human mind itself begins to shut downâthe Cuban public, frozen in place by an incompetent and antiquated regime, sank to almost metaphysical levels of hopelessness.

After three days of calamity, power is now being restored to parts of Havana. It wonât last. Disaster by now is a progressive condition. The regime in Cuba is hardly a government: Itâs a gang of incompetents who hold absolute power but have no idea what to do with it. Cuba itself is hardly a country; itâs a lifeless thing, a corpse bleeding out its best talent, inert and decaying amid the glorious beauty of the Caribbean. This situation has lasted for 65 years and shows no signs of change.
Yet we are taught by religion to believe in resurrection. The island-wide blackout, inconceivable in a modern nation, provides an omen for the future. Sooner or later, infrastructure collapse will trigger political collapse.
Some ambitious general, discerning much virtue in capitalism, will sweep away the mafia and offer himself for the presidency. The crowd in the street will enthusiastically support anything that isnât the present regime. The Cuban people have always been talented and energeticâany who doubt this can visit Miami and see for themselves. American investment and tourism will return in force. Cuba will come back to life. But itâs been a long, long wait, and it looks like weâll have to wait a bit longer.

Olbermann was discussing the election with Newsweekâs Howard Fineman, a frequent guest. They topic was, how can a winner finally be determined in this never-ending Democratic race for the nomination? Of course, the assumption was that it was Clinton that should be shown the door (despite clearly still earning her spot in the race thanks to, um, voters). Fineman said that, all the delegate math aside, ultimately it was going to take âsome adults somewhere in the Democratic party to step in and stop this thing, like a referee in a fight that could go on for thirty rounds. Those are the super, super, super delegates who are going to have to decide this.â

Vice President Kamala Harrisâs campaign is in trouble, which means we may be in for one hell of a post-election fireworks show.
If she loses the presidential election, there will be intra-Democratic Party in-fighting unlike anything weâve seen before.âŻThe recriminations will be extraordinary. There will be finger-pointing, backstabbing, excuse-making and an air of panic that will make even the sleazy, widespread gossip-peddling that followed the late Senator John McCainâs defeat in 2008 look tame.

In December 2019, when Harris dropped out of the 2020 Democratic primary before the Iowa caucuses, there was a windfall of terrific gossip regarding her leadership style, or lack thereof, staffer dysfunction, inexcusable mismanagement, even the meddling of her control-freak sister, Maya.âŻEarlier, in 2016, we saw much of the same when Hillary Clinton somehow managed to lose a winnable election to a game show host despite enjoying every conceivable advantage. The only real difference between the two events is thatâŻthe recriminations in 2016 were far more muted than what Harrisâs inner circle allowed for in 2019. Say what you will about Clintonland, but theyâre nothing if not loyal.
Now imagine Harrisâs post-primary implosion, but on a national scale, one in which DemocratsâŻagainâŻlose the White House to Donald Trump. If Harris loses this November, no miracle will contain the intra-party in-fighting. Itâll spill into the papers and the streets, and weâll all have a front seat to the gloriously bitter denunciations and accusations.
Letâs get past the finish line before publishing these sorts of pieces: âRight now, I think Trump has a narrow advantage, and the Democratic panic is real. But itâs still quite plausible that the blue wall holds, that Harris wins that second congressional district in Nebraska, and that, with 270 electoral votes, Kamala Harris becomes the 47th president of the United States.â
