HOW KAMALA RESPONDED WHEN HER TEAM TOLD HER THERE WAS NO WAY SHE COULD BEAT TRUMP:

Though Harris was behind in the battleground states, her spokespeople were oddly upbeat. Appearing on MSNBC back on October 27, campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon had declared, “We are very confident we’re going to win this thing.” On Friday, November 1, senior adviser David Plouffe posted on X that late-breaking undecided voters were going for Harris by more than 10 points.

A campaign has a gravitational pull, and chief of staff [Lorraine] Voles was feeling it. “You get sucked into the momentum,” she said. “Like you believe it. I’ve been on winning ones and losing ones, and this felt more like [Bill] Clinton’s [in 1992] than [Michael] Dukakis’s [in 1988].” Voles wasn’t talking poll numbers or analytics, but intangibles. “The rallies were so big and so enthusiastic. People were lining the streets.” But Harris’s pollsters didn’t share the kumbaya cohesion. One ex-Biden campaign official couldn’t understand all the heady talk. “They still had consistent polling results that showed her down by two in every state,” she said, “and Trump always overperforms. How the hell were they going to make that up?”

On election morning Harris gathered with her family in the front part of the house while, in the back, Nix, campaign chief of staff Voles, and others monitored returns. O’Malley Dillon and company were running the campaign nerve center at the Marriott Marquis hotel near Howard University with an army of data crunchers, keeping Harris and her inner circle informed as returns came in.

The vice president was hunkered down with her family. “We saw her maybe one time that whole night,” said one of her close insiders, when the VP “came back” to their section of the house. As the evening wore on, “it was just like, ‘What’s going on?’ The SG [second gentleman] would come in. Doug would say, ‘What’s happening?’ ” The realization grew that it was going to be a difficult night. One key indicator: Voles had summoned a photographer and a videographer. They were supposed to head to the Howard University campus with Harris for her victory speech. Instead, they cooled their heels.

The moment of truth came just after midnight. O’Malley Dillon huddled with her two best analytics experts. They were her barometer, her North Star, and when they told her they did not see a path, O’Malley Dillon knew there wasn’t one. She called the vice president. “We’re down in the blue wall states, and we’re not going to be able to make it up,” she said. “Oh, my God,” said Harris. “What is going to happen to this country?”

Biden reportedly demanded of Harris, “let there be no daylight between us,” but it sounds like his camp was far more rational about what the internal polling was saying than hers. Still, her team must have known that the iceberg was coming, and would hit hard. Did they not warn Harris? Did she not inquire as to how her campaign was doing?

NPR BOSS MAKES THE ULTIMATE BIDEN CONFESSION AS SHE’S GRILLED OVER WOKE-ISM AND LIES AT BLOCKBUSTER HEARING ON CAPITOL HILL:

NPR’s CEO has owned up to not giving the Hunter Biden laptop story the coverage it deserved.

Katherine Maher, a progressive who previously headed Wikipedia before starting at NPR last year, made the admission after being grilled relentlessly by Marjorie Taylor Greene on Capitol Hill about the broadcaster’s alleged bias.

‘I do want to say that NPR acknowledges we were mistaken in failing to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story more aggressively or sooner,’ Maher said Wednesday, at a hearing centered around whether NPR should receive federal funding.

At another moment, Greene confronted Maher — a 41-year-old former tech exec — on some of her more opinionated comments.

This included statements to social media penned in the past, like one that slammed Donald Trump as a ‘racist’ and ‘sociopath’ in 2020.

When asked by GOP Rep. Tim Burchett about such tweets, Maher said: ‘I regret [them] today.’

When asked about her tweets by Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX), Maher was reduced to little more than a slimline Sgt. Schultz impersonation. She knows nothing, nothing!

Earlier: ‘Bat Guano Crazy:’ NPR CEO Katherine Maher Says Truth Is a ‘Distraction’ to ‘Getting Things Done.’

Here’s another tweet Maher probably doesn’t remember sending. As I wrote last year, remember the 1960s, when Marshall McLuhan envisioned an interconnected “global village” with everyone wired together and sharing ideas? Right around the same time that Martin Luther King envisioned a world in which people were judged by the content of their character, and not their skin color? So much for those ideas:

Also from Christopher Rufo last year: Quotations from Chairman Maher. NPR’s new CEO exemplifies the ideological capture of America’s institutions.

ALSO JUST IN, GAMBLING GOING ON IN RICK’S CAFÉ: Confirmed: Biden Was Given the Press Questions In Advance.

Imagine if the Donald Trump for President campaign demanded that questions directed at Trump were pre-scripted and that the campaign would get the right to pre-approve quotes derived from those interviews.

We would hear nonstop about propaganda, suppressing the truth, First Amendment concerns, and be treated to a media freakout that would go on for days or weeks.

Now look at how the same Pravda Media responded to demands by the Biden administration’s demands for the same privilege: mute compliance.

You want us to be the propaganda outlet for the most corrupt president in America? Of course! Isn’t that our job?

It certainly was while Biden was in office. Is the card in his hand in the above photo anything like this one?

At NewsBusters, Tim Graham adds: Team Biden’s Mistreatment of a Pliant Press Corps.

Michael LaRosa was Jill Biden’s press secretary for the first 18 months of Biden’s presidency, and in recent weeks he’s loosened his lips about how Team Joe mistreated a pliant press corps.

In an interview with Cenk Uygur on “The Young Turks” show, LaRosa admitted: “They did bully a lot of journalists, and I think they would tell you that now. They wouldn’t have told you at the time.”

LaRosa didn’t want to say the reporters were “co-conspirators,” but it’s impossible to see all of their obsequious cooperation with Team Biden and think that word is inappropriate.

* * * * * * * *

On “Doctor” Jill Biden’s team, LaRosa said, he told staffers it was “unethical” to require questions before granting access, but they replied it’s what Team Joe (or “the boys team”) required. “These young kids are really taught to make that a part of their sort of pre-pre-screening for interviews.”

“Yeah, it’s amazing to me that no one in the press complained about it,” mused Uygur. The press corps was stuffed with pushovers, from the same leftist press outlets who screamed hostile, un-screened questions at Trump and called it “strengthening democracy.”

Uygur wondered: “Did the press ever push back? We couldn’t see the press pushing back at all, until the debate [fiasco].” This underlined how much the press is a megaphone for Democrats, and when the Donkey Party breaks down into two sides, the press will then present both sides.

LaRosa thought maybe the local reporters would be less intimidated by a national campaign. “Like why didn’t any of these reporters even in New Hampshire, and some of these small town papers or local news, like why didn’t anybody ever say anything [about the pre-screening]? I thought it was so weird at the time.”

Ben Rhodes smiles. Keep the above image in mind the next time anyone in the DNC-MSM dusts off their hoary old “comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable” cliché.

JOHN NOLTE: Disney Scapegoats Rachel Zegler for Snow White Debacle.

After Snow White debuted to a devastating $87 million worldwide (break even is around $700 million when this stinker will be lucky to hit $250 million), a bunch of “unnamed” Disney insiders ran to their stenographers at the far-left Variety to pin all the blame on its 23-year-old star.

“Insiders” claim Disney was furious when Zegler added “and always remember, free Palestine” to an X post thanking fans for 120 million views on a Snow White teaser trailer.

Afterwards, Snow White’s “producer Marc Platt flew to New York to speak directly with her,” the report explains, before dropping this nuke on the mouthy little oompa loompa: “But the actress, whose relationship with the studio began to unravel in 2022 during a contentious West Side Story awards season campaign and continued as she trashed the beloved original Snow White stood her ground, and the post remained.” [emphasis added]

You see what they did there? They are telling the entire entertainment industry that Zegler didn’t just make a couple of youthful mistakes on Snow White. No, no, no, no… They are telling everyone she’s difficult, impossible, and not worth doing business with. The Hollywood term for his is “assholing your way out of the industry” and Disney wants everyone to know Rachel Zegler is an asshole.

And Disney’s campaign could be working; as Nolte writes, “Zegler’s IMDB page shows zero upcoming projects. Stick a fork in the unibrow, she appears to be done.”

But then, Disney has a quite a recent tradition over the past decade of transforming eager young actresses into culture war cannon fodder:

INSIDE DISNEY’S SNOW WHITE FIASCO: Death Threats, Beefed-Up Security and a Social Media Guru for Rachel Zegler.

On Aug. 12, 2024, three days after Rachel Zegler hit the stage at Disney’s D23 fan event to introduce the first official trailer of “Snow White,” she thanked supporters effusively in an X post for driving the teaser to 120 million views in 24 hours. One minute later, she added an afterthought in the same thread: “and always remember, free palestine.”

That addendum, which amassed 8.8 million views, nearly four times the number for the initial post, quickly made the rounds, with many inside the studio expressing shock that the “Snow White” star would commingle the promotion of its $270 million tentpole with any kind of political statement. A Disney executive raised the studio’s concerns with Zegler’s team, while the film’s producer Marc Platt flew to New York to speak directly with her. But the actress, whose relationship with the studio began to unravel in 2022 during a contentious “West Side Story” awards season campaign and continued as she trashed the beloved original “Snow White,” stood her ground, and the post remained. Behind the scenes, death threats toward Zegler’s co-star Gal Gadot, who is Israeli, spiked, and Disney had to pay for additional security for the mother of four.

Three months later, following the presidential election, Zegler posted “Fuck Donald Trump” and “May Trump supporters … never know peace” on Instagram. Disney had had enough, given that the star was signaling to half the potential audience of an already troubled film plagued by costly reshoots to stay home. Platt made the case again to Zegler. After a back and forth, she began working with a social media guru paid for by Disney* to vet any posts before the film’s March 21 bow**. Disney declined comment. Zegler did not respond to a request for comment.

Now that the film’s dismal opening weekend — $87 million worldwide — is in the rearview mirror, Burbank brass are evaluating what went wrong. To put “Snow White’s” global box office haul into perspective, it’s about $34 million less than Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” in October but with a bigger budget by $70 million.

The comments section below the Variety article is a minefield of knee-jerk anti-Israel and anti-Hamas posts, with each side believing the casting of the other actress is what tanked the movie. But it isn’t just the two actresses, of course. When Alissa Heinerscheid imploded Bud Light in 2023 by trashing the brand’s (now former) customers and creating a can celebrating Dylan Mulvaney, Ed Morrissey wrote:

Years from now, business schools will teach the case of Bud Light as a cautionary tale. Suggested course titles: How to Destroy Your Brand Without Really Trying, or Five Ways to Lose Customers by Picking ‘Influencers.’

Similarly, film students will studying Disney’s Snow White remake as an example where everything that could wrong with a movie did go wrong.

* Just to get back Zegler’s social media histrionics, in 2013, Nick Gillespie of Reason wrote: Alec Baldwin’s Real Twitter Problem Isn’t Homophobic Ranting — It’s the End of the Red Carpet.

Remember the good old days, not just when there were only three national TV networks and one or two national newspapers, but when Hollywood studios could virtually completely control the image surrounding their contract players like halos on a saint’s shoulders? Those days are over, Baby Jane.

A few stars still know that they old ways are best. In his video critique of the Snow White debacle, Ben Shapiro noted:

The star Rachel Zegler is unbelievably charmless in public. Studios really need to go back to what they originally did, which was tell your stars to shut up and not say things, because no one is to hear your star say offensive things off the screen.

It’s quite foolish, which is one area, by the way, where Tom Cruise has got it exactly right. One of the reasons he’s still America’s most iconic movie star well into his 60s, is because Tom Cruise you just don’t see him anymore when he is not on the big screen. He’s just that character on the big screen, which means that you can just take him or leave him on the big screen. That that is the smart way to approach this stuff; Hollywood needs to go back to it.

Before it’s too late — and it’s getting increasingly late for the beleaguered industry.

** Apparently, all bets are now off on Disney’s social media guru vetting Zegler’s posts:

JEFFREY BLEHAR: Jasmine Crockett Is Tacky and Classless, and I Encourage This. Responding to Crockett calling wheelchair-bound Texas’ GOP Gov. Gregg Abbott “Gov. Hot Wheels” — at a Human Rights Campaign dinner to boot — Blehar writes:

It is the artificiality of her attempts to spark outrage that makes them fall so weirdly flat. Her attempt to catfight on the floor of Congress with Representative Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R., Ga.) last May was strangely unsuccessful — she started out with the moral upper hand, no less — precisely because MTG is a moron to the manner born, a natural talent unrestrained in her impulses by qualms of intellect or conscience. Crockett is blocked from any real path to advancement in office by both geography (Texas may yet one day turn blue, but not for a former BLM activist) and work ethic (she isn’t exactly leadership material). Publicity — and its hopefully attendant financial rewards — is the best she can hope for.

Yesterday’s soundbite — designed quite intentionally to get people like me writing huffy pieces about her — instead leaves me feeling the same way I do about Mace: Stop trying so hard to elbow your way into a picture you don’t belong in. But I ultimately feel quite differently about the two: When Mace does something embarrassing, I cringe because we are on the same team. When Crockett does this, I can only applaud and happily encourage her to carry on. Let’s go, Jasmine! It’s time to escalate! Let’s see how you can top this one — and I hope every voter in America is watching when you do.

After being caught on video, Crockett preposterously claimed:

I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable.

Literally, the next line I said was that he was a “Hot A** Mess,” referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged.

There are at least two problems with her dissembling. The first is that her “explanation” absolutely tortures the metaphor:

But the second is worse: Jasmine Crockett ‘Liked’ Posts Calling Abbott ‘Hot Wheels’ in 2021, Undercutting Her Explanation for Deriding Wheelchair-Bound Governor. “Crockett was aware—and supportive—of the derisive label for the governor before he began the migrant transfers.”

As Blehar concluded, “Let’s go, Jasmine! It’s time to escalate! Let’s see how you can top this one — and I hope every voter in America is watching when you do.” Well, here we go: Wait, Is That Assault? Jasmine Crockett Physically Attacks DC Correspondent, Slaps Phone Away (Watch).

“Wow, that’s pretty crazy. She grabbed his phone and scratched his hand because he asked her a question about violence. Yes, Democrats, pretty please, with sugar on top, keep making this woman the face of your party.”

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT JEFFREY GOLDBERG ACCIDENTALLY BEING ADDED TO A NATIONAL SECURITY CHAT:

According to the White House, the chat, which was started to discuss then-incoming attacks on the Houthis in Yemen, did exist. Goldberg was inadvertently added to it by National Security Advisor Michael Waltz — or someone on his behalf. President Donald Trump has since given Waltz a vote of confidence, saying that he has “learned a lesson.”

What’s not clear is whether any actual “war plans” or other classified information were disclosed, which is the heart of Goldberg’s contention. The White House is disputing his claim, and given his background, no one should be taking his word for it.

With that said, it was no doubt an unforced error to add Goldberg to the chat. The contact name used was “JG,” with Waltz (or his staffer) possibly mistaking it for administration official Jamieson Greer. Given how much the Trump administration has been targeted over the years with leaks, all of us would be forgiven for believing that Goldberg’s being a saved contact for any administration official is problematic. I’m not suggesting that Waltz did anything purposeful here. I truly believe this was an accident, but I am suggesting that he has no business ever being in contact with someone like Jeffrey Goldberg.

Indeed: Here’s What the Media Won’t Tell You About the Atlantic Hit Piece.

“There is a dispute over whether the term ‘war plans’ is being exaggerated,” [CNN’s Scott] Jennings noted, undercutting the central premise of the Atlantic report.

This is a significant issue. Goldberg has a history of publishing bogus hit pieces against Donald Trump.

In 2020, The Atlantic published a report claiming that Trump didn’t want to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 because the troops there who died in battle were “losers” and “suckers.” The article was quickly debunked after it was first published, and Goldberg even admitted that the story may have been wrong. Weather reports confirmed that Trump’s visit to the cemetery was canceled due to weather conditions.

During the 2024 election, Goldberg was responsible for another bogus hit piece against Trump that claimed Trump got angry at the bill for a deceased soldier’s funeral that he offered to pay for back in 2020, which reportedly cost $60,000. The story was clearly bogus, and other journalists had been pitched the same story but could tell it wasn’t legit and didn’t run it.

Goldberg has repeatedly sacrificed his credibility and the credibility of The Atlantic to push false narratives to undermine Trump. His track record of dishonest reporting speaks for itself, making skepticism not just reasonable but necessary. Given how eagerly the mainstream media rushed to declare the Steele dossier legitimate — only for it to be exposed as a sham — there’s every reason to doubt Goldberg’s framing of this story.

While legacy media fixates on process stories and supposed scandals, the bottom line remains clear: The Trump administration took decisive action to protect American interests, while its critics scramble to fabricate controversy.

As Ben Shapiro tweeted in October about Goldberg, “Barack Obama’s favorite stenographer is nothing if not predictable.”

As is the rest of the left’s response:

More here: Tulsi Gabbard Just Denied Democrats the ‘Signalgate’ Narrative They So Desperately Wanted. “[D]espite Warner’s posturing, he did not get the “gotcha” moment he sought. If there was no sensitive or classified information shared in that chat, then this whole thing amounts to a silly mistake that caused no harm to national security.”

NIHILISTIC NEWSOM: Does Gavin Newsom believe in anything?

Gavin Newsom’s new podcast reveals not only a media-savvy politico seeking more exposure to a bigger audience. It also reflects a concerted drive by the onetime self-anointed leader of the #Resistance to reinvent himself as the unique progressive breaking through to MAGA World, as evidenced by his decision to invite Right-wing firebrands like Charlie Kirk, Michael Savage, and Steve Bannon as his initial guests.

This shift away from liberal orthodoxy has shocked Newsom’s long-time progressive allies, who see it as an act of treachery. Yet if they had been paying attention to Newsom’s career — above all, his willingness to morph into whatever identity best serves his quest for power — this wouldn’t be so surprising.

Conservatives, too, will discover that Newsom isn’t a tool of the progressive Left, or a typical California progressives with “communistic” policies, as one conservative outlet described them. On the contrary, Newsom, unlike his predecessor, Jerry Brown, has been a committed, shameless sniffer of political winds throughout his career.

Exit quote: “Of course, things may change in response to Trumpian overreach. The 45th and 47th president might just make progressivism great again. If that comes to pass, the Governor’s moderate rhetoric will no doubt change. In being willing to bend to any prevailing trend, at least, Newsom is almost perfectly consistent.”

21st CENTURY QUESTIONS: Who Owns Your DNA Now?

23andMe’s vast repository of user data, amassed through years of saliva-based ancestry testing, lies at the mercy of its own self-imposed guidelines rather than robust federal oversight.

The company’s 2023 data breach, which exposed sensitive details like genetic predispositions and ancestry reports for nearly 7 million users, underscored the sheer volume of personal information it holds. For the millions who entrusted their DNA to 23andMe, the assumption might have been that such intimate data enjoys the ironclad protections of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a law designed to shield sensitive health information from unauthorized disclosure. Yet, 23andMe operates outside HIPAA’s reach, leaving it tethered only to its own privacy policies — rules it can rewrite at will.

This regulatory gap casts a long shadow over the company’s future, especially as it teeters on the brink of a sale following its bankruptcy filing. A patchwork of inconsistent state privacy laws, coupled with the absence of a cohesive federal framework, means that the genetic profiles of 15 million Americans could be up for grabs.

YOU STAY CLASSY, DEMS:

It’s still only March, but Crockett has been having quite a year:

Remember that it’s all performative: You Should Learn to Code.

In keeping with the new trend of code-switching, we have one of its greatest employers, Jasmine Crockett, invoking that linguistic nuance into her own professional congressional cadence every day. Originally the beneficiary of good secondary schooling where proper English is taught for $35,000 a year, young Jasmine once sounded like this. Today, she sounds like that. (same clip 20 seconds in) Why? Is it because now she represents Texas’ 30th District, where only 18 percent of the constituents are white, 40 percent are black, and the balance is largely made up of Hispanics? Apparently, for Crockett, code-switching from proper English down to the vulgate is important to reach out to her voters — because, apparently, speaking like an educated person just puts them all off. That seems like she’s sort of making a blanket assumption, as she does, but if Ted Cruz did it (he’s from the same district), he’d likely be roasted into next year. Crockett won’t because, with her immutable characteristics, she is immune from Kryptonite. And the need for “authenticity.”

STEVE HAYWARD: The Nadir of the Climate Change Movement.

At this point, someone might well raise the question of whether Trump’s moves will last or whether they will be promptly reversed by the next Democratic administration, for whom the “climate crisis” will remain a core priority (or whether some of Trump’s proposed changes will encounter a legal roadblock). This is a plausible scenario until we consider the startling proposition that the Trump Administration’s moves are, in fact, a lagging indicator of where the climate change story has been heading for some time now, unrecognized by the media and most politicians.

Climate change has been the premier environmental issue for almost 40 years now and appears to be running through what the eminent political scientist Anthony Downs identified in a classic 1971 article in The Public Interest as “the issue-attention cycle.” Downs outlined a five-stage cycle through which political issues of all kinds typically progress.  Experts and interest groups begin promoting a problem or crisis, which is soon followed by the alarmed discovery of the news media and broader political class.  This second stage, significantly, typically includes a large amount of euphoric enthusiasm—you might call this the “dopamine” stage—as activists conceive the issue regarding global salvation and redemption. (Al Gore is the premier example of this aspect of climate change.)

Then comes the third or “hinge” stage, where there is “a gradually spreading realization that the cost of ‘solving’ the problem is very high indeed.”  This is where we have been with climate change from almost the beginning. “The previous stage,” Downs continued, “becomes almost imperceptibly transformed into the fourth stage: a gradual decline in the intensity of public interest in the problem.”  Then, in the fifth or “final [post-problem] stage,” Downs concluded, “an issue that has been replaced at the center of public concern moves into a prolonged limbo—a twilight realm of lesser attention or spasmodic recurrences of interest.”

Climate change has arrived at Downs’ fifth stage. Despite billions spent for climate crisis agitprop, the backing of a compliant media, the surrender of much of big business (including many fossil fuel companies), and the endless braying of opportunist politicians, opinion surveys consistently find that the public does not buy the “climate crisis,” ranking it at the bottom or next to the bottom of their major issue concerns.

Downs predicted in his article—written less than a year after the first Earth Day launched the modern environmental activist movement—that the issue-attention cycle for environmental issues would be longer than for most other matters, which has certainly proved to be the case for climate change.

We’re Americans. The cowboy is our icon, the pioneer, the frontiersman, the visionary entrepreneur and the self-made man whose lingering existence is an affront, and a mortal threat to the dominance of the Deep State cowards.

The New York Times is as lost in its Acela Corridor provincialism as any isolated shepherd boy in the most remote valley of Kurdistan. It hates the America that most of us love and so many died for. MICHAEL WALSH: Announcing The Pipeline 2.0.

Which brings us to today, in the second administration of Donald J. Trump. Five years ago, we began the-Pipeline.org in order to address many of the most important issues in modern society, beginning with the energy industry but quickly turning our attention to such enormities as the Covid lockdowns, the “climate change” hoax, and electric vehicles, among many other things. The four-year horror show of the late, unlamented Biden administration gave us plenty of fodder, beginning on day one when the barely ambulatory rutabaga formerly known as Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., abruptly canceled the Keystone pipeline and promptly sent the United States into an economic and social tailspin from which we are just now, thankfully, emerging. We will continue to treat these issues and many more as they arise, but in a somewhat different format.

The-Pipeline. org will now publish at least once weekly, and sometimes twice. It will consist of a Monday column by myself that will also appear on our “This Week at the Pipeline” Substack page and, at least semi-monthly, a short video interview with people of interest and/or in the news. One feature we’ll start very soon is are my filmed conversations with several of the participants from the London conference, in which we discuss the many sins of the media and other topics, and I think you’ll find the discussions both stimulating and rewarding.

ED MORRISSEY: Domestic Terror Plot Foiled in Austin, TX.

Remember when Donald Trump’s candidacy supposedly represented lawlessness and a threat to democracy? Good times, good times.

In yet more evidence of a case of projection, Austin police discovered multiple “incendiary devices” planted at the local Tesla dealership. Police successfully removed the devices, which means that they may have not just saved a few electric vehicles — they may have preserved some key evidence for the FBI. “Incendiary devices” mean bombs in common parlance:

APD said it responded to a call about suspicious devices at the showroom around 8:04 a.m. Monday. The APD bomb squad was called out to investigate.

The devices were “determined to be incendiary” and were taken by police without incident, APD said.

This happened at 8:04 local time today. Oddly enough, the Dallas Morning News has yet to report on the act of domestic terrorism even at 1:45 in the afternoon. They do, however, have a snarky editorial cartoon poking fun at the rising acts of terror against Tesla and car owners over Elon Musk’s participation in the US DOGE Service and elimination of swaths of federal spending.

The Dallas Morning News finally put an article on the “incendiary devices” discovered at the Austin dealership, but as of 6:55 PM EDT, the link to it was buried halfway down their homepage:

NEW CIVILITY WATCH: Pam Bondi Warns Jasmine Crockett to ‘Tread Carefully’ After Threat to ‘Take Down’ Elon, Crockett Responds.

Crockett swiftly ran to MSNBC’s Alex Witt to “set the record straight,” dismissing Bondi’s threat with a defense suggesting she wasn’t being literal when she told rabid followers to take down Musk. It was the Tesla stock she was referencing.

“I wasn’t calling for violence,” she said. “It’s ridiculous that I even have to say something like that. But because they are trying to twist our words, one of the things that I told people to do is make sure you are adhering to the laws in your area.”

In her usual dismissive attitude, Crockett reiterated her explanation for the “slow people listening,” which was a reference to Bondi but likely more appropriate to anyone watching MSNBC.

“I just want to say that I have never promoted violence whatsoever,” she claimed without evidence.

Her track record, however, betrays the slow congresswoman, as Crockett has repeatedly made incendiary remarks that could be construed as a call to violence against Trump administration officials.

MONOPOLY ROUND-UP: The Democrats’ Corporate Lawyers Get the Humiliation They Deserve.

Lots of monopoly related news, as usual. But I want to start with an important moment in the Democratic Party establishment. Donald Trump got a major corporate law firm, pretty much the shadow Kamala Harris administration in waiting, to bend the knee. At the same time, there were massive outpourings of popular anger towards oligarchs at rallies held by Bernie Sanders, as well as rage from Democratic voters towards their own leaders at town halls. The Democratic Party is in chaos.

Let’s dive in.

For a long time, I’ve discussed a secret center of power in America, what is known as “Big Law,” a network of law firms who serve as a shadow government for the out-of-power party.

Lawyers have always had a special place in America. They must maintain a dual loyalty, serving clients with advice and court representation, but serving the public as officers of the court. There’s a dense ethical code lawyers must maintain. For instance, they can’t help their clients break the law, and they can’t switch sides in a dispute.

In 1931, Robert Jackson, who later served on the Supreme Court, gave a speech to the American Bar Association making that point. “We believe in an independent bar, free not only from government control, but intellectually independent of client control,” he said. “In the client-and-attorney relation the client is not a master, the lawyer is not a mere hired hand. He is an officer of the Court, with a duty of independent judgment in the performance of his professional service and under a duty to serve all sorts and conditions of men.”

But Jackson, along with men he admired such as Louis Brandeis, did not feel that lawyers, especially those in New York working for financial firms, lived up to their billing, instead seeking to twist the law on behalf of the powerful. And the problem is much worse in modern America, dominated as it is by oligarchs. This is especially true in cloistered specialities, like antitrust.

A few years ago, I spoke at the American Bar Association Antitrust Section, and observed the rage the gathered corporate lawyers felt towards anti-monopolists for barging into their club. While I noted at the time the legal elements of the disagreement, there’s a political element as well. These lawyers are the Democratic establishment, the real thinkers and operatives behind the frontmen like Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer and candidates like Kamala Harris and Barack Obama. And it’s been this way for decades, such that it’s systematized. Young ambitious liberals have to get their few years at one of these firms and then they can be considered a real lawyer.

Looking at past averages in those conservative-versus-liberal locations it was found that “Snow White” actually performed slightly better than historical levels in those red areas against those traditional percentages.

Family and animated movies’ ticket sales come from 63% Blue counties and 37% Red counties while their attendance stems from 60% Blue counties and 40% Red counties. That means that Snow White with 40% ticket sales and 43.5% admissions from Red county-based cinemas overindexed in such locations.

What this revealing detail means is that the studio has lost its ability to spin this as a social backlash. Disney cannot dismiss this as an intolerant reaction when its film performed below expectations with its dependable blue locations. Coupled with the diminished interest in international territories, this is a sign that the product quality was the issue. Anti-woke backlash is no longer an excuse when the avoidance by audiences was across the spectrum.

What Disney is facing with this performance is that it had a functionally flawed film. Numerous misfires in the approach to the product and with casting led to a result that few had an interest in. Instead of focusing on the quality of the material, the studio looked to generate a new version with contemporary virtue signaling, making a progressive spin on a classic property.

The result was not creating a new fusion offering; instead, it ended up serving up a dish that most found unpalatable. The box office shows data points that indicate the woke tendency at Disney is a losing proposition. Looking over its recent hits – “Deadpool 3”, “Inside Out 2”, and “Moana 2” – lays out the obvious facts for the executives. When you do not force feed woke content, the audiences reward you with interest and ticket purchases. “Snow White” should serve as the object lesson for future considerations on projects they greenlight. It remains to be seen that Disney is learning from these misfires.

Finally, on Saturday, the day after its debut, IMDB’s readers gave Snow White 2.4 out of ten. It’s currently:

DISPATCHES FROM AL SHARPTON’S NETWORK: MSNBC: Segregationist Trump Has Ushered In A New Era Of Jim Crow.

Co-host Michael Steele also got into the act. He approvingly read a statement by a “real dear buddy” who wrote:

“Jim Crow has left the South and now roams the country as his grandson, James E. Crow, Esquire. The segregationists played the long game while we were asleep at the wheel.”

This is a stale echo of Biden’s ranting about the Republicans representing “Jim Crow 2.0.” If Trump is such a racist, why did he receive a higher percentage of the black vote than any Republican presidential candidate in 48 years?

How do things compare to 2009, when Steele — still describing himself as a Republican at the time — sat there and took it when a CNN host said that the 2008 Republican National Convention “literally look[ed] like Nazi Germany?”

CNN host D.L. Hughley turned to the standard left-wing tactic of playing the Nazi card against Republicans on his program on Saturday evening: “The tenets of the Republican Party are amazing and they seem warm and welcome. But when I watch it be applied — like you didn’t have to go much further than the Republican National Convention….It literally look[s] like Nazi Germany.” He went on to say that blacks weren’t welcome in the party: “It just does not seem — like not only are we not welcome — not only are we not welcome, but they don’t even care what we think.” He later described the GOP as “reactionary.”

Yes, I got John McCain confused with Hitler all the time back then, too – as did much of the left, until he magically became the good Republican to beat up Trump, even more so after his death. Writing up McCain’s funeral in his 2018 USA Today column, Glenn wrote that  McCain as Hitler comparisons were all the rage among the left in 2008:

The Atlantic ran a pre-election cover story on McCain, but the cover photo was taken by celebrity photographer Jill Greenberg. It made McCain look like Emperor Palpatine’s older, less-attractive brother. This was not by accident, but by design. On her blog, Greenberg actually bragged about her dirty trick of getting him to stand above a strobe placed on the floor to make him look old and scary.

Obama surrogate Congressman John Lewis (D-Georgia) invoked Alabama racist George Wallace in talking about McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin. Jonathan Martin noted in Politico that McCain was being called racist without basis, simply because it was helpful to the Democrats. The Nation weighed in on McCain’s wartime use of the term “gook” as evidence of his racism.

Then-famous music star Madonna opened her concert tour by calling McCain Hitler and encouraging people to vote for Obama. And the popular Democratic blog DailyKos, not to be outdone, published a comparison of McCain to both Hitler and Stalin.

And, of course, the treatment was repeated with a different target in 2012, when Mitt Romney was given the same Hitler treatment. It’s as if every Republican who is in power, or who might be, is Hitler — but only as a temporary condition. (I’m old enough to remember when George W. Bush was Hitler). As soon as a new Republican target appears, the old Hitler gets rehabilitated, and even employed, by way of comparison, as a way to criticize the new one.

How much was John McCain rehabilitated by the left, particularly after his death? This much: Cindy McCain appointed to Joe Biden’s transition team.

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: Moment Bernie Sanders storms out of ‘nonsense’ interview leaving ABC reporter stunned after he asked simple question.

Sen. Bernie Sanders abruptly ended his sit-down interview with ABC News.

The Vermont independent left This Week host Jonathan Karl stunned when he refused to answer whether he thinks his progressive partner in the House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should run for the Senate.

Sanders said the interview was ‘nonsense’ after Karl pushed him if AOC should replace Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer after he voted for the Republicans budget to avert a government shutdown.

After trying to shut down the line of questioning, the firebrand senator stood up in the middle of the interview and stormed out of the room – a moment that was caught on camera as Karl urged Sanders not to cut it short.

No longer on-camera, Sanders called the discussion ‘inside the beltway stuff’ and suggested there are bigger fish to fry then speculating over the future of the leadership in the Democratic Party.

The senator then conceded and allowed Karl to get in one last, non-AOC-related question that centered around his political future.

JON GABRIEL: Waiting for the Chainsaw.

I come from the Ron Swanson school of government spending. If an official says, “We need to cut expenditures by 32%,” I’ll reply, “Let’s make it an even 40,” before starting a chant of “Slash it! Slash it!”

So, imagine my surprise to learn that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is destroying America as we know it. At least that’s what I’ve gathered from the headlines.

Elon Musk’s DOGE unit is causing confusion — and raising security and legal concerns.” “Veterans groups raise the alarm about DOGE cuts at the VA.” “DOGE cuts at NOAA will impact hurricane forecasting and data gathering on storms.” And those are just from NPR, paid for by the federal government and listeners like you.

Obviously, legacy media will oppose nearly every move made by a Republican administration, let alone by the Bad Orange Man and his First Bro, Elon. But conservative platforms also are sounding the alarm. National Review warns Elon Musk to “Cut Spending by Using the Law, Not by Breaking It.” Jonathan V. Last of The Bulwark stokes fears about “The Illegality of DOGE.” Fellow Weekly Standard alum Stephen Hayes points out “The Downside of DOGE,” despite the fact that he praised government gridlock in 2013 because it forced Washington to deal with the national debt.

The debt in 2013? A paltry $16.7 trillion. Today it clocks in at more than twice that.

Many self-proclaimed conservatives have been demanding that we shrink the government as long as they’ve been alive. Now that it’s finally happening, they’re getting squeamish. Whether you love Trump or hate him, fans of limited government should heed the advice of Mrs. Thatcher: “This is no time to go wobbly.”

Much faster, please. Read the whole thing.

FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY: Boris Johnson orders UK lockdown to be enforced by police.

Boris Johnson will order police to enforce a strict coronavirus lockdown, with a ban on gatherings of more than two people and strict limits on exercise, as he told the British public: “You must stay at home.”

The prime minister ratcheted up Britain’s response with an address to the nation on Monday evening, warning that people would only be allowed outside to buy food or medication, exercise alone once a day, or to travel to work if absolutely necessary.

All non-essential shops will close with immediate effect, as will playgrounds and libraries, he said in the address from Downing Street.

After days of being accused of sending mixed messages about what the public should do, Johnson significantly escalated his language as he urged people to comply with the more stringent measures.

“You should not be meeting friends. If your friends ask you to meet, you should say no. You should not be meeting family members who do not live in your home. You should not be going shopping except for essentials like food and medicine – and you should do this as little as you can,” he said.

“If you don’t follow the rules, the police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings.”

“You should not be meeting friends. If your friends ask you to meet, you should say no.” Some found that order rather difficult to follow, not least of whom was “Professor Lockdown” himself: What Neil Ferguson’s booty call tells us about modern politics.

The conspiratorial left, convinced the world is run by secret cabals of bankers and cigar-chomping media moguls, thinks the Neil Ferguson story is a ‘dead cat’. In other words, they think the Daily Telegraph – Evil Tory Rag – revealed that Ferguson carried on bonking his mistress in defiance of a lockdown that he himself bears much responsibility for in order to distract attention from Britain overtaking Italy with the highest Covid death toll in Europe. A ‘dead cat’ strategy is when a sensationalist story is introduced to the mix to divert attention from a far more serious political crisis. Ferguson’s sexual antics are the Tory regime’s dead cat to Britain’s corona death toll, apparently.

This sums up the political infantilism of the left. It is actually incredibly important news that Ferguson, the Imperial College modeller who said it was possible 500,000 Brits would die if we didn’t lock down, defied the lockdown. It deserves the frontpage treatment it is getting today. For Ferguson’s booty call with his married lover actually reveals a great deal about the 21st-century elites and how they view their relationship with the masses. It’s one rule for them and another for us. They can carry on enjoying sneaky freedoms because their lives and jobs are important; we can’t because we are mere little people, whose silly work lives can casually be disrupted, whose love lives can be turned upside down, and whose families can be ripped apart. The Ferguson affair provides an illuminating insight into the new elitism.

As does the person with whom Ferguson hooked up with on said booty call:

On at least two occasions, Antonia Staats, 38, traveled across London from her home in the south of the capital to spend time with the government scientist, nicknamed Professor Lockdown,” reported the Telegraph.

Staats, we later learn, lives with her husband and two children in a £1.9 million home in south London. She’s a “left-wing campaigner” who is reportedly in an open marriage. According to the Telegraph, “She has told friends about her relationship with Prof Ferguson, but does not believe their actions to be hypocritical because she considers the households to be one.”

Ah yes, the old our-households-are-one-because-I’m-in-an-open-marriage argument. Never mind that a week before Ferguson and Staats’ first meeting, Britain’s Health Secretary had said even couples not living together must stay apart during the lockdown.

* * * * * * * * *

One rule for the poor people, another rule for us elites. And they wonder how they got Brexit.

But “Professor Lockdown” and his paramour weren’t the only high-ranking brits to violate Boris Johnson’s strict lockdown orders. There was also some chap called…Boris Johnson: U.K. “Partygate” probe reveals details of illegal, booze-fueled parties at PM Boris Johnson’s house during COVID lockdown.

Some of the 16 events under investigation were held at 10 Downing Street — Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official home and office — and the Cabinet Office, and should not have been allowed to take place, investigator Sue Gray concluded in her 37-page report, adding that “other events should not have been allowed to develop as they did.”

In April, Johnson was for attending his birthday party, making him the first British prime minister ever found to have broken the law while in office.

“What took place at many of these gatherings and the way in which they developed was not in line with COVID guidance at the time,” Gray said.

The report included 10 redacted photographs, including four that show Johnson himself attending a birthday party in his honor in June 2020, and four others that show him raising a glass at another event. Both events were held at his Downing Street office.

Or to put it another way: Boris Johnson Missed His Churchill Moment. The pandemic was Boris’s biggest test. He failed.

The entire world had surrendered to the People’s Republic of China, adopting its totalitarian disease-control strategy, and unlike France or Poland in World War II, we surrendered without a shot being fired. If any man in the world was well-positioned to stand against this, it was the garrulous British renegade, Boris Johnson. Instead, the United Kingdom became a police state.

Well, not the entire world: How Sweden proved the world wrong about lockdowns: The evidence is clear: authoritarian restrictions did not save more lives.

As for Boris’ future, Theodore Dalrymple reviews his autobiography at City Journal and concludes:

How will history—that is to say, those who write history—judge Boris Johnson, and what of his own future? Will he be seen just as a mountebank and an opportunist, who rode a wave of discontent to assuage his own demanding, not to say imperious, ego? To return to the question: Behind the frivolous facade, were there just layers of frivolity ad infinitum, or was there a bedrock of serious intent?

I find it difficult to answer. Again, it is hard to be too damning of a man whom one has met and liked. That was, after all, why George Orwell did not want to meet the authors of the books he reviewed. At the same time, I understand those who splutter at the mention of his name.

As to Boris’s future, I think it would be a mistake to write him off. Public memory is short, and at the next election, in 2028, he will be only 64, by which time, if he continues his present trajectory, Keir Starmer will be the most reviled man in recent British history. Boris will be able to pose again as the only way through an impasse: I got Brexit done; now, I will remove Starmer!

Just pay no attention to what I did during 2020 and 2021…

REASON MAGAZINE’S PETER SUDERMAN: Forget Woke Snow White. Disney’s Remake Is More Like Socialist Snow White.

[Snow White] is indeed a trainwreck. The problem isn’t that it’s woke. It’s that it’s awful—and lamely, bluntly socialist.

The remake’s big idea was to twist the idea of the word “fair.” See, in earlier versions of Snow White, an evil queen asks a magic mirror, “Who is the fairest of them all?” It’s always the queen, until one day the mirror responds that it’s actually her stepdaughter, the Princess Snow White. The question, “who is the fairest,” in other words, has always been a question about beauty. But in the remake, there’s something else going on. The movie goes to great lengths to demonstrate that the queen isn’t fair because she’s not a socialist. I am not kidding.

The film doesn’t quite use that word. But early in the film, Snow White encounters a handsome thief named Jonathan in the castle. Jonathan is the leader of a group of bandits who live in the woods and survive by stealing food. He feels justified in stealing because he and other ordinary people have very little while the queen has a lot and she won’t share.

This isn’t just a generic lesson in being kind. Later, after Snow White takes up with seven computer-animated dwarfs in the forest, one of the dwarfs explains that the bandits in the woods are “only there because of the queen’s greedy economic policies, which forced them there into a liminal space where ethics are harder to define.” This might not be a precise word-for-word quote—the line gets spat out so fast I am not certain I transcribed it exactly right—but it’s pretty close. This is a movie about how stealing is justified because of the evil queen’s economic policies. She’s not fair, you see, because her privilege and selfishness have impoverished ordinary people. It’s Snow White by way of Occupy Wall Street.

And now we know why Disney cast arguably Hollywood’s most prominent Jewish actress in the role of the Evil Queen. Or as Jim Treacher tweeted:

Though to be fair, between Zegler’s hatred of Israel, and the casting of Gadot as the capitalist Evil Queen its all pretty on-brand for Disney:

UPDATE:

The slow speed it takes both to produce individual movies and for Hollywood to jump on new trends has long bedeviled the industry. One of the themes of Peter Biskind’s classic Easy Riders, Raging Bulls look at how the Young Turks such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, John Milius and ultimately George Lucas and Steven Spielberg got their feet in the door is that in the mid-to-late 1960s, the aging original Hollywood moguls were all in a doomed quest for a repeat of the mammoth box office of 1965’s The Sound of Music, even as audiences were growing increasingly sour on traditional musicals. When Antonioni’s Blowup, Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey became surprise hits, the old moguls scrambled to find people who had some clue what those crazy “young people” in the audience wanted to see. (The trend would repeat starting in 1977, when now-corporate-dominated Hollywood was caught completely flat-footed by film that had unexpectedly massive legs: Star Wars.)

But moviegoing was still an ingrained habit in a world before VCRs, let alone streaming. In 2025, there will be lots more woke-era product dumped out by studios. But what comes next in an industry full of TDS, in thrall to the CCP, and conversely, a loathing of flyover country — but not their cash?
