YOU SPELLED DISNEY WRONG, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, SPOT ON: Marvel Is Now a Giant Slop Machine.
Even at the level of base genre pleasures, Brave New World feels more obligatory than exciting. It seems hard to remember now, but once upon a time these Marvel movies staged action in fast, funny, creative ways, utilizing cutting-edge visual effects to realize their superheroes’ unique abilities. Nowadays, more often than not, we get dull, derivative drudgery — a symptom perhaps of familiarity (there have been 35 of these movies so far) but also an overwhelming sense of box-checking that’s settled in over the past few years. Is it that they’ve all just done every move, every kick, every punch, every launch to death? Last year, Deadpool v. Wolverine provided Marvel with a much-needed mega-hit, but even that felt like a knowing nod to the fact that the studio had run out of ideas. That film succeeded by poking fun at its very existence. So, uh, what do the other films do now?
To its credit, Brave New World does okay with the fights themselves — the stuntwork is effective, and there’s still fun to be had with the way Captain America throws that shield around, plus now he’s also got those Falcon wings — but its dogfights and more VFX-heavy sequences are so lifeless and tiresome that I felt my eyes drifting closed a couple of times. By the time Ross actually turned into Red Hulk, I started to imagine a Has Fallen series entry in which slobby retired Secret Service agent Gerard Butler had to protect President Red Hulk from a gaggle of murderous goons. Is there a worse sign for a film than for the viewer to start imaging other, similarly mediocre films they could be watching instead?
* * * * * * * *
One can squint at times to try and see the movie Captain America: Brave New World maybe wanted to be — not so much a replay of the old Chris Evans Captain America films and more a shorter, tighter, close-quarters action flick, one without any alien invasions or heavy fantasy elements, one in which the villains wear suits and hoodies and use guns and fists instead of space weapons and whatnot. One without any epic quests for magic elements, the video-game conceit that was already tired a decade ago and yet still drives so many action movies today. And certainly, the concept of a hero who uses his wits and his courage instead of a special serum would have fit in nicely with that approach. But somewhere along the way, the whole thing appears to have spun out of control into the confused and shallow mess that we have before us. It’s enough to make one wonder if, given the level of interference and second-guessing involved, Marvel could ever make such a movie. Victims of their own success, they’ve somehow turned their vaunted production enterprise into a giant slop machine.
Marvel Comics movies, the Star Wars franchise, the turgid reboots of beloved old Disney movies. Uber-Woke Disney ruins everything it touches. The Critical Drinker is appropriately merciless in his review, including noting the movie’s depiction of a “totally implausible David and Goliath war between America and Japan, when China would have been a much more plausible rival. But then again, we wouldn’t want to offend one of Disney’s biggest potential markets, now would we?”
Earlier: Disney’s Pipeline Still Clogged With Woke. “Disney is in a weird place right now. They’ve sort of, kind of, announced that (like most of the rest of corporate America) they’re backing away from wokeness, to the extent that they’re cutting woke storylines from Pixar properties, and Disney was able to course correct in enough time to make Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 big hits last year (plus Deadpool & Wolverine, which I suspect was too rude to ever be infected with wokeness), but the company itself is still infected with DEI, and they still have an awful lot of very expensive turds, conceived and crafted in the woke era, sliding down the alimentary release canal.”
UNEXPECTEDLY: In final days, Biden awarded $50 million to self-dealing charity leader.
During President Joe Biden‘s last 20 days in office, his administration issued at least $1 billion in grants to hundreds of nonprofit groups scattered throughout the United States. A slice of that pie, $50 million, was awarded by the Department of Energy to a little-known charity in New Mexico called the Tribal Energy Consortium.
The $50 million grant, for a climate program under the Inflation Reduction Act, Biden’s signature 2022 spending law, is, on paper, an unbelievable windfall for the Tribal Energy Consortium. The charity posted just under $50,000 in revenue in both 2022 and 2023, IRS data show.
But now, along with other Energy Department grants under Biden, the Trump administration is investigating the $50 million handout, the agency told the Washington Examiner. The grant has not yet been disbursed to the awardee and could be cut, according to an official briefed on the situation.
That investigation will take into account how the TEC shares close ties to another tax-exempt organization and federal grantee with a history of financial mismanagement, the Washington Examiner has learned.
“The Department of Energy is conducting a department-wide review, which includes funding such as grants and loans, to ensure all activities are consistent with President Trump’s executive orders and priorities,” Ben Dietderich, a spokesman for the Energy Department, told the Washington Examiner on Monday.
As the Gipper famously said, “We could say the government spend like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors, because the sailors are spending their own money.”

SUNLIGHT IS THE BEST DISINFECTANT: JD Vance torches European leaders for ‘criminalizing’ free speech in extraordinary Munich speech.
Vice President J.D. Vance took his culture war to Europe on Friday, warning that its greatest threat came not from China or Russia but from within as he delivered a blistering attack on what he said was the continent’s retreat from its traditional values.
Vance said free speech and democratic institutions were being eroded in an address to the Munich Security Conference.
He accused European politicians of forcing people to shut down social media accounts and urged leaders to do more to stem illegal immigration.
Vance reserved particular scorn for America’s closest ally, and the case of a British man arrested after praying near an abortion clinic.
‘Europe faces many challenges, but the crisis this continent faces right now, the crisis I believe we all face together, is one of our own making,’ he said.
‘If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you, nor, for that matter, is there anything that you can do for the American people who elected me and elected President Trump.’
If his audience of European VIPs had expected Vance to discuss the future of the war in Ukraine, outlining Donald Trump’s peace plan, they were in for a shock.
Some shifted in their seats as he attacked European politicians head on.
Good, they deserve every bit of Vance’s scorn: Oh Hell Yeah! JD Vance Pulls Zero Punches Roasting All of Europe at Munich Security Conference (Watch).
JD Vance went to the Munich Security Conference and roasted the entire continent of Europe for being petty tyrants and criminalizing freedom of speech, including a British man arrested for praying at an abortion clinic.

I’VE GOT A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS: Inside Captain America Brave New World’s Chaotic Production. ‘I Think Everyone Knew This Is Probably Not Going to Be a Good Film.’
In the dénouement of a bitterly contested presidential election but also as the opening salvo to a 2025 Marvel movie slate that carries through with Thunderbolts* [asterisk in the title — Ed] and Fantastic Four: First Steps (set to release, respectively, May 2 and July 25), Brave New World now finds itself reaching theaters at a turbulent cultural moment. Mackie discovered that the hard way during the press tour as his comments that “America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term, you know, ‘America’ should be one of those representations” went viral, sparking accusations of anti-Americanism and necessitating him to issue a hasty Instagram retraction/apology/clarification.
According to a technical crew member on Captain America: Brave New World who was present on set and has knowledge of the film’s postproduction process, Disney is all too aware of its potential liabilities — on the heels of disastrous test screenings last year that necessitated a lengthy 22 days of reshoots, the 11th-hour addition of a new supervillain played by Giancarlo Esposito, major sequences being cut, and the film’s release date being punted from February last year. In particular, Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk/Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross character created uncomfortable political resonances. A demagogic military leader who transforms into a rampaging, orange-skinned superhuman, the character shares certain unmistakable traits with Donald Trump. To be sure, the reshoots took place last summer, long before the 45th president was certain of becoming POTUS 47. But in recognition of what one insider calls an increasingly “politicized” environment, Disney changed the sequel’s original title from Captain America: New World Order to the comparatively anodyne Brave New World. (Indeed, in July, the studio pulled a theatrical trailer featuring footage of an assassination attempt on the Ross character out of sensitivity around a deadly attempt on Trump’s life earlier the same month.)
Moreover, this source (who has worked on several Marvel television and film projects and spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to comment publicly) described a high degree of difficulty on the reshoots and action set pieces that ran up the budget. Compounding matters, Ford (now 82) lived up to his reputation as a legendary curmudgeon on set, according to the source, making matters more difficult for Onah — an acclaimed independent filmmaker but one, like so many hired by Marvel, with zero experience directing within the trappings of a nine-figure budget. Marvel and Onah declined to comment; a representative for Ford did not respond to Vulture’s request for comment. A source close to the production said there is “no truth” to allegations that Ford’s behavior was unusually challenging.
I worked on the reshoots. I think everyone on the crew knew this is probably not going to be a good film. Some of the action sequences were not believable. We had a lot of frustrations on set. After principal photography was finished, it was like, “Oh, we’re going to introduce the leader of the Serpent Society.” It was on, then it was off, then it was on again. That’s very expensive to do. My co-workers who spent more time on Brave New World than I did said, “Yeah, this has been a really rough production.”
When the studio had its test in front of an audience, it didn’t respond. Maybe they don’t want to see anything political in an election year? Maybe they were divided on who they were voting for? General Ross reads as an allusion to Trump. He’s this very powerful general who becomes kind of a fascist and turns into a raging Red Hulk. This is my opinion, but I think Disney was realizing, Hey, we’ve been bleeding for a while. Let’s try not to piss off our core base any more than we have been over the last couple of years. They know you’re going to lose a lot of your audience that way.
Earlier: ‘If you genuinely think Trump is a fascist, go and have a lie down.’

SOMEBODY SET UP US THE BOMB: Minneapolis violence interrupter threatens violence to City Council over violence interruption funds.
A prominent north Minneapolis pastor interrupted a Monday Minneapolis City Council committee meeting and made threatening statements, then doubled down in a Facebook Live video posted Tuesday night.
The Rev. Jerry McAfee — whose nonprofit has done violence prevention work for years — brought a council committee meeting to a halt Monday when he interrupted the meeting and went on a five-minute rant about the council considering temporarily moving some violence prevention programs to Hennepin County.
In a statement released Wednesday night, Minneapolis police said the department had met with council leadership as well as McAfee.
“No crime has occurred; however, we are working with building security to ensure everyone’s safety,” according to Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. Garrett Parten.
* * * * * * * *
When Chavez asked if he was threatening them, McAfee said, “I don’t make threats, I make promises.”
He challenged the council to “put me out” but said if they tried to arrest him, his “people” would come.
As he left the meeting room, he told the council members, “I’ll see you again; that’s a promise.”
After he left the meeting, he told the Star Tribune that the council was trying to move funding to the county to steer funding to people who had gotten it in the past. He scoffed at the council suggesting he threatened them, calling it “childish foolishness.”
McAfee suggested in subsequent social media posts that he half expected to be arrested. He doubled down in a Facebook Live post Tuesday night, in which he said “Rev. McAfee ain’t hittin’ nobody. I ain’t shot nobody. However I will if I have to. I don’t want to.”
After posting those remarks, Council Member Robin Wonsley sent a note to her constituents in which she said of McAfee: “This individual has now publicly made death threats.”
And to think Tim Walz promised to deliver all of this Minnesota Nice to the rest of America last year.
MR. TAIBBI GOES TO WASHINGTON:
Yesterday Matt Taibbi gave his opening statement at the House Judiciary Committee hearing on the “censorship-industrial complex.” He posted the text of his remarks here (with links) at his Racket News site and added a brief note on the hearing as well. I have posted video below. This is the text.
Two years ago, when Michael [Shellenberger] and I first testified before your Weaponization of Government Subcommittee, Democratic members called us “so-called journalists,” suggested we were bought-off “scribes,” and questioned our ethics and loyalties. When we tried to answer, we were told to shut up, take off our tinfoil hats, and remember two things: one, there is no digital censorship, two, if there is digital censorship, it’s for our own good.
I was shocked. I thought the whole thing had to be a mistake. No way the party I gave votes to all my life was now pro-censorship. Then last year I listened to John Kerry, whom I voted for, talk to the World Economic Forum. Speaking about disinformation, he said “our First Amendment stands as a major block” to our ability to “hammer it out of existence.”
He complained that “it’s really hard to govern” because “people self-select where they go for their news,” which makes it “much harder to build consensus…”
I defended Kerry when people said he “looks French,” but Marie Antoinette would have been embarrassed by this speech. He was essentially complaining that the peasants are “self-selecting” their own media. What’s next, letting them make up their own minds?
These days, the establishment left may actually hate the First Amendment more than they hate the Second: NPR boss Katherine Maher once called the First Amendment a ‘challenge’ and ‘reverence for the truth’ a distraction.

OH, TO BE IN ENGLAND: Generation Bland: the inevitable rise of ‘Palentine’s Day.’
As we approach with anticipation or dread 14 February, the day we traditionally celebrate love and all things amorous, a certain demographic will instead be observing a rather less passionate and altogether more bland occasion: ‘Palentine’s Day’. Commemorated on 13 February, this is apparently the date upon which to honour platonic friendships instead of romantic engagements – and it’s proving increasingly popular among Generation Z.
It all started with ‘Galentine’s Day’, a celebration of female friendship invented by the character Leslie Knope in American political satire mockumentary Parks and Recreation in 2010. As the concept moved from comedy to real life it morphed into the gender-neutral ‘Palentine’s’ – lest anyone should feel left out. Now universities across the country are putting on events for the occasion, and card companies have reported a surge in the popularity of merchandise commemorating it. Sales of Palentine’s cards at online greetings company Thortful have increased from a few dozen in 2016 to tens of thousands today.
According to relationship expert Tautvydas Sutkus, many younger people take a dim view of Valentine’s Day on account of its ‘traditional, often exclusionary, focus on romantic relationships’. This alternative ‘allows them to celebrate their friends and the emotional bonds they share’. This development shouldn’t surprise us. ‘Palentine’s Day’ is fitting for a generation that is inclined to be puritanical and moralistic. It’s also an age group that’s seemingly resigned to settle for a safe, insipid and risk-free existence: Generation Z has become Generation Bland.
Could be far worse — it could be Palantine’s Day:
Incidentally, remember in 1981, when John Hinkley was considered institutionally insane for thinking that Travis was the good guy in Taxi Driver? How far the left has “progressed:” Luigi Mangione frenzy: It’s time for a national conversation on left-wing violence.

[Nick] Ackerman, a former Watergate prosecutor, weighed in on DOGE and the agencies that had been targeted for audits, saying, “That stuff is sacrosanct, and you’ve got people going in there who don’t know anything about —”
Bakari Sellers attempted to help Ackerman out, arguing that what the judges were issuing were “just restraining orders,” but Jennings was not convinced.
Going back to Ackerman’s point, he said, “What you just said is so profound. You said, ‘These people don’t know anything and they don’t know what they’re doing.’”
“That’s right,” Ackerman agreed.
“But they are appointees of the duly elected president, so your view, you’re here as our legal expert, but your view is because you don’t personally believe that they know enough, that the duly elected president — who appointed a Treasury Secretary and who appoints special appointees like Elon Musk — shouldn’t be able to act as the president because you don’t personally believe they know enough?”
“Well, they certainly —” Ackerman sputtered.
“Is that how it works?” Jennings asked. “Or do elections mean anything to you!”
“It’s got nothing to do with elections,” Ackerman shot back, prompting a visual reaction from Jennings: “Whoa! Truth was told tonight. The truth was told.

His motto, “If I spend enough, I will make it right,” is the essence of his articulated ideas about changing society.
It seems that Soros believes he was anointed by God. “I fancied myself as some kind of god …” he once wrote. “If truth be known, I carried some rather potent messianic fantasies with me from childhood, which I felt I had to control, otherwise they might get me in trouble.”
When asked by Britain’s Independent newspaper to elaborate on that passage, Soros said, “It is a sort of disease when you consider yourself some kind of god, the creator of everything, but I feel comfortable about it now since I began to live it out.”
Since I began to live it out. Those unfamiliar with Soros would probably dismiss the statement out of hand. But for those who have followed his career and sociopolitical endeavors, it cannot be taken quite so lightly.
Soros has proved that with the vast resources of money at his command he has the ability to make the once unthinkable acceptable. His work as a self-professed “amoral” financial speculator has left millions in poverty when their national currencies were devaluated, and he pumped so much cash into shaping former Soviet republics to his liking that he has bragged that the former Soviet empire is now the “Soros Empire.”

CHAOS AT DOJ IN THE FIRST WEEK OF THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION? Blame Barack Obama. For 12 of the past 16 years the ranks of DOJ Attorneys have been stuffed full of liberal progressives — time to go.
The story also addresses the issue of January 6 prosecutors and the fact that there were hundreds of Assistant U.S. Attorneys brought from across the country to staff the cases since the volume was greater than the U.S. Attorney for D.C. could manage. The story notes that the sheer numbers in that regard mean “they all can’t be fired” — most do not deserve to be fired — there is certainly a meaningful way for new management to review the work done and make a determination whether continued employment in the same capacity is warranted. It might not be next week or next month, but where the work of individual prosecutors is found to have exceeded what could be called “doing justice” that prosecutor could pay for that with their job.
“Fairness” and “justice” are the North Stars of public prosecutors, not winning. Some — not all — either never realized that in their zealotry or they lost track of it somewhere along the way. JIM GERAGHTY: The Answer to Charges of ‘Nobody Elected Elon Musk.’
Americans Elected the Guy Who Pledged He Would Give Elon Musk This Task
On February 8, Democrats held a “Nobody elected Elon!” rally outside the U.S. Treasury Department.
It’s become the party’s new rallying cry. Maxine Waters, who has served in public office since 1976 and who is 86 years old, said at the rally, “We have got to tell Elon Musk, ‘Nobody elected your a**.’” Democratic members of Congress Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico have introduced the ‘‘Nobody Elected Elon Musk Act,” which declares any special government employee in charge of the Department of Government Efficiency “shall be liable for any claim against the federal government relating to activities of the department.”
It is true that no one cast a ballot for Musk in 2024. Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk is not a natural-born U.S. citizen, and is ineligible to be president under the U.S. Constitution. But no one in the president’s cabinet was elected to their jobs, other than the vice president. Back in 2020, nobody voted to put Alejandro Mayorkas in charge of the border, Antony Blinken in charge of foreign policy, Jake Sullivan in charge of national security, or Janet Yellin in charge of the economy. You don’t vote for the guys around the president, other than the vice president. You vote for a president, who selects his team and, in positions where it’s required, gets them confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
And Donald Trump gave America plenty of advance notice that he intended to put Musk in a role looking for ways to cut federal spending.
Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) is screaming that “King Trump and Elon Musk are going after all of your freedoms, all of your rights, all of your money:”

SUNUNU: You mean the FEMA money for migrants? That’s OK now?
COOPER: I’m not saying it’s OK, don’t put words in my mouth. Don’t be a d*ck.
Emphasis mine. Also, let’s emphasize that the other panel member in this discussion is Jeffrey Toobin, who’s best known for literally whipping it out during a business meeting on Zoom. If Cooper wanted to discuss male genitalia, the comment should have been directed at his colleague Toobin, who for some reason CNN still employs. You just can’t make this up.
Cooper later apologized, but that hardly matters. Why would a broadcast professional drop that into a policy debate?
In 2017, Brooke Baldwin got the vapors over Clay Travis joking that he believes in “the First Amendment and boobs,” even as Don Lemon told Kathy Griffin on a CNN New Year’s Eve broadcast: “Nice rack.” During the past two weeks, its distaff newsreaders are tut-tutting a teenage DOGE wonk whose handle is “Big Balls” and Elon Musk himself temporarily changing his Twitter handle to “Harry Bolz,” while Anderson Cooper is deploying locker room talk with Chris Sununu (with Toobin on-camera as well). CNN is once again trying to have it both ways when it comes to maintaining a veneer of civility, and not surprisingly, failing badly.
