Cruz opened the hearing by stating his priorities for NASA clearly and explicitly: He is most focused on ensuring the United States does not cede any of its preeminence to China in space, and this starts with low-Earth orbit and the Moon.
“Make no mistake, the Chinese Communist Party has been explicit in its desire to dominate space, putting a fully functional space station in low-Earth orbit and robotic rovers on the far side of the Moon,” he said. “We are not headed for the next space race; it is already here.”
Cruz wanted Isaacman to commit to not just flying human missions to the Moon, but also to a sustained presence on the surface or in cislunar space.
In response, Isaacman said he would see that NASA returns humans to the Moon as quickly as possible, beating China in the process. This includes flying Artemis II around the Moon in 2026, and then landing the Artemis III mission later this decade.
The disagreement came over what to do after this. Isaacman, echoing the Trump administration, said the agency should also press onward, sending humans to Mars as soon as possible. Cruz, however, wanted Isaacman to say NASA would establish a sustained presence at [sic] the Moon. The committee has written authorizing legislation to mandate this, Cruz reminded Isaacman.
“If that’s the law, then I am committed to it,” Isaacman said.
Maybe the biggest obstacle to establishing a sustained presence is Artemis. Flying on SLS at $4 billion per launch — just for the SLS rocket — is too expensive, and its launch cadence is too slow to do what it’s supposed to do.

The Supreme Court in London is set to decide what defines a woman in a ruling next week, a matter that’s become an international debate.
Scottish courts have considered a law, the 2010 Equality Act, applies across Great Britain, according to the BBC. A lower Scottish court had ruled against a women’s group bringing the challenge. The lower court said biology does not define sex.
The appeal is now before the Supreme Court in London.
The women’s group, For Women Scotland, argues that sex is based on biology.
The Scottish government, meanwhile, says the law requires gender recognition based on an individual’s certificate, which can be changed after birth.
Arguments were heard last year in the dispute, but a decision is expected to be announced Wednesday, with the high court deciding what defines “sex.”
It seems insane that courts in previously well-run countries have to rule on basic biology… because it is insane.

NIFTY: New Design Means SpaceX Can Launch More Starlink Satellites at a Time.
In 2024, SpaceX typically launched 20 to 23 Starlink satellites per launch. But last month, it increased the number to 27 and 28 per flight while using the same Falcon 9 vehicles. This comes after it made a design change to the V2 Mini Starlink satellite, which can deliver 96Gbps of network bandwidth each.
The V2 Mini satellites debuted in early 2023, with the goal of delivering even higher quality broadband on the older V1.5 satellites. Since then, SpaceX has improved the design, resulting in the “V2 Mini Optimized.”
I’m excited to see what the bigger and faster V3 brings once Starship comes into service.

Much of the blame for this situation lies with Hillary Clinton. Hillary, whose ego was so broken by her surprise loss to Donald Trump in 2016 that she concocted a conspiracy theory in which Trump was a Russian mole “installed” in the White House as part of an election “stolen” by Vladimir Putin so that America could be delivered into the clutches of the Russian oligarchy, and who then demanded that America’s press and “elite” institutions avenge her loss and personal humiliation on the basis of that entirely made up conspiracy theory.
And oh, how well it worked. Huge majorities of Democrat voters believed it then and continue to believe it now. And once you believe that the President is literally a foreign agent actively working to destroy the country, well, you are obliged to act… and when I think about the assassination attempts in Butler and West Palm Beach, the phrase “by whatever means necessary” comes to mind. But for mainstream Democrats as a party, the belief in this conspiracy has forced them into an official policy of Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Which is to say, anything that Trump says, does or supports must be resisted (sometimes violently) because, by definition, he is an agent of a foreign government bent on destroying the country.
Is Trump a brilliant political strategist? I don’t know, but I would submit that he doesn’t have to be. He has recognized the fact pattern I’ve outlined above and has been able to maneuver Democrats and their most rabid Resistance voters into a series of unpopular positions simply by taking the 80% side of a series of 80/20 issues and daring the Left to take the 20% side. And they have obliged him, because they have left themselves no other choice.
Conspiracy theories are dangerous that way, and not just to the body politic. They are corrosive, lethal even, to our own minds and to the way we see the world.
