‘UNEXPECTEDLY:’

During the Obama years, “unexpectedly” appeared in so many headlines that it became a punchline — an expression of the journalistic class’s childlike wonderment in the world around them and their disappointment over their encounters with unmet expectations…This pattern of astonishment became a joke because conservatives were never as stupefied by the news as its chroniclers. The Obama administration’s efforts to catalyze an economic recovery ensured it would be sluggish, relying as it did on inefficient stimulus spending, counterproductive regulations of labor and financial markets, and marginal tax increases to cover existing federal obligations and a handful of pricey new obligations. The outcomes these policies produced were not “unexpected” to students of sound fiscal policy.

“Federal deficit unexpectedly set to double this year,” read an Axios headline on Thursday. “The federal deficit is expected to nearly double this year, from about $1 trillion last year to $2 trillion for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30,” the report observed. “There’s no precedent for deficits this large, as a share of the economy — outside war, deep recession or pandemic.”

Axios cites Washington Post journalist Jeff Stein’s reporting, who joins the “Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget” in assigning the blame for this unfortunate circumstance to rising interest rates on America’s rapidly ballooning debt obligations and declining tax revenue. “A strong economy usually reduces the deficit,” Stein wrote. “Not this time.”

What is this “strong economy” you speak of? Mortgage rates could hit 8%, economists say, citing a worrying sign not seen since the Great Recession.

TRAGIC MAUI FIRE HAS OPRAH’S BRAND UP IN FLAMES:

Only Oprah Winfrey’s problem seems to be one of self immolation by association vice actual flames tickling her toes.

For such a carefully cultivated image after all these decades, old girl’s been coming apart at the seams these past few weeks, with jarring, insensitive gazillionaire misstep after misstep.

The things that might have passed unnoticed otherwise have been magnified by the enormous loss of life and property, the scope of the overall devastation, parcity of the emergency and relief response, and miserable performance of elected officials.

Let’s face it – Maui residents are pissed off.

They might have been a little torqued that the billionaire on the island escaped unscathed while they were wiped out. That festered some – even to the point of accusations of hiring firefighters for her estate making USA Today.

Didn’t her associations with Obama, Harvey Weinstein, and the New York Times’ ‘1619 Project’ set Oprah’s brand alight long before 2023?

THE WIND CRIES NIKON: The Nikon That Shot Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Psychedelic’ 1960s LP covers is for Sale.

The original Nikon camera that photographer Karl Ferris used to take multiple Jimi Hendrix 1960s-era album covers as well as Ferris’ original Halliburton case are coming to auction.

Ferris is an English photographer best known as the innovator of “psychedelic photography,” a look that he employed at the behest of Jimi Hendrix and which would go on to define the look of the 1960s and influence the culture of the time around the world. Ferris would also shoot other rock bands and icons including Eric Clapton, Cream, and Donovan.

As the San Francisco Art Exchange puts it, Ferris captured some of the most unforgettable photos of the 1960s including eight album covers in 1967 along with a large number of posters and magazine features.

TESLA’S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET ON CALIFORNIA’S I-5:

The Harris Ranch Tesla Supercharger has a couple of things going for it that have made it a part of Tesla enthusiasts’ lore: It’s one of the electric car giant’s first Supercharger stations, and with 98 charging bays, it’s also the biggest in the world.

The Central California charging station is such a big deal that Tesla clubs even make it an appointment destination. Yes, they’ll rally-style drive to it just to honor its lineage and size.

But as with many Tesla-related things, there is a secret, thinly obscured by an Oz-like curtain, at the Harris Ranch Supercharger. Hidden in plain sight across the way from the Harris Ranch Supercharger’s main stations, behind a Shell station, is a small diesel plant that has helped power Tesla’s footprint.

To be fair, that’s pretty consistent with Tesla’s overall strategy: When the Going Gets Tough, the Electric go Petrol. Electric car-maker Tesla isn’t taking any range risks in Australia with their support vehicles. When they need to repair their breakdown-prone plug buggies, Tesla use reliable, petrol-powered Mitsubishis.

BURNING MAN CANNIBALISM CONSPIRACY THEORIES SPREAD ONLINE:

However, since news emerged of the flooding, some have made outlandish claims online about what was going on at the desert camp.

“There’s been several unconfirmed reports of cannibalism taking place on Saturday at Burning Man due to the dwindling food supply,” one Reddit user wrote.

They claimed: “A small group of survivors was trapped by the trash fence overnight during the rainstorm and were forced to consume one of their camp mates before making the several mile dangerous trek back to their camp on foot.”

One user of X, formerly Twitter, wrote the same evening: “We’re hearing about the first reports of Cannibalism at the Burning Man event.”

There is no cannibalism at Burning Man. And when I say none, I do mean that there is a certain amount. But necrophilia is right out!

THE GRAUNIAD IS SHOCKED THAT CONSERVATIVE JOURNALISM IS GOING ON IN AMERICA: Texas fracking billionaire brothers fuel rightwing media with millions of dollars.

The Wilks brothers, for instance, have poured millions of dollars into PragerU and the Daily Wire, two rightwing media outlets that have promoted wide-ranging conservative agendas, including climate crisis denialism to school-age kids and adults via short videos, articles and other materials.

The two brothers have given at least $8m to PragerU, which is unaccredited, according to Texas financial records. In July, Florida approved the use of what PragerU has called its “edutainment” videos and other materials for use in its classrooms, and PragerU has said it is trying to get other states, including Texas, to do likewise.

In 2015, Farris Wilks gave $4.7m to help launch the Daily Wire and remains an owner of the media company, whose founding editor and co-owner Ben Shapiro has forged ties with Dennis Prager, the PragerU founder and talkshow host. Shapiro and Prager are slated to attend a PragerU “founders’ retreat” in September for donors who give at least $100,000 a year.

Historically, the two brothers have also backed a number of rightwing Texas Republicans including Senator Ted Cruz, whose abortive run for president in 2016 was bolstered by $15m they gave to a pro-Cruz Super Pac.

As William F. Buckley famously said, “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.”
