BEING IN YOUR TWILIGHT YEARS TENDS TO DO THAT: CBS Is Rethinking Its Life Choices.

Of course, rumors and even accurate reports on ongoing negotiations don’t always pan out, and there’s a lot of ground to cover between telling [Bari] Weiss that she will have a big role at CBS and Weiss actually being able to implement durable changes at the network. Still, we can all enjoy the spectacle while it lasts. CBS News is probably second only to the Times as the oldest media enemy of conservatives, from the McCarthy era and the Tet Offensive to George H. W. Bush’s confronting Dan Rather on air and the 2004 “Rathergate” scandal, when Rather tried to get payback at Bush’s son, all the way up to Donald Trump’s lawsuit against 60 Minutes. And that’s just the abridged version. As Peggy Noonan quipped in 1990 of the long shadow of Edward R. Murrow at CBS News, during her time working for Rather before joining the Reagan White House, “It was Murrow who said, ‘Some stories don’t have two sides.’ At Auschwitz he was right. But the news isn’t always Auschwitz.”

Auschwitz, you say? ‘Free Speech Atty.’ Tries Running After Getting Rekt for Antisemitic Swipe at Bari Weiss Buuut We Got It.

WIKI WARS:

On Aug. 27, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform launched a probe into the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia, to determine the role and the methods of foreign individuals in manipulating articles on the platform to influence U.S. public opinion. In the committee’s letter to the foundation’s CEO, committee Chair James Comer and Subcommittee on Cybersecurity Chair Nancy Mace requested “documents and information related to actions by Wikipedia volunteer editors” to uncover “potentially systematic efforts to advance antisemitic and anti-Israel information in Wikipedia articles.”

I shed light on these organized efforts in an October 2024 investigative report. Specifically, I identified a network of more than three dozen editors—whom I dubbed the “Gang of 40”—who systematically pushed the most extreme anti-Zionist narratives on Wikipedia. These editors have made 850,000 combined edits across 10,000 articles related to Israel, effectively reshaping the entire topic area. Last month, the group scored its latest and perhaps most brazen victory when a Wikipedia administrator issued a final rejection to an appeal on an extraordinary 12-month freeze these editors had pushed to place on the lead section of the “Zionism” article, thus prohibiting any changes to their edits during that period.

The episode began in January 2024, when Gang of 40 editors implemented what they called a moratorium on a hotly debated sentence inserted by one of the group’s leading members in the article’s opening paragraph: “Zionists wanted to create a Jewish state in Palestine with as much land, as many Jews, and as few Palestinian Arabs as possible.”

That claim—which represents the Gang of 40’s underlying strategy of equating Zionism with ethnic cleansing or genocide—now caps the second sentence of the most important resource defining Zionism online, and Wikipedia has ruled that it cannot be challenged or corrected for a year.

PUTTING THE BRAZIL INTO A BRAZILIAN: Woman Freaked Out by Beautician Wearing Meta Video Glasses.

Ever since the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses arrived on the market, the elephant in the room has always been: what if someone uses them for clandestine recording?

And it struck one New York woman who was attending a Brazilian wax appointment at the Europan Wax Center and noticed midway through proceedings that the beautician was wearing a pair of the glasses that are capable of recording video and still images.

“The girl that was giving me the wax… she was wearing Meta glasses, and I didn’t notice it at first, because we were talking so much, we had good banter, she was very nice,” influencer Aniessa Navarro explains in a TikTok video.

“And then it was like, maybe like halfway, five minutes in or so, I’m like looking at her, and I’m looking at her glasses, and then I’m like, ‘Are you wearing Meta glasses? She’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, I am, but they’re not charged, they’re not on, like, I promise.’”

Navarro says that after she noticed the glasses, she felt extremely uneasy and couldn’t stop thinking, ‘could this girl be filming me right now?’

OUT ON A LIMB: Graham Linehan’s arrest shows we need a UK First Amendment.

The co-creator of Father Ted, Graham Linehan, was arrested at Heathrow Airport on Monday on suspicion of ‘inciting violence’. His crime? Criticising trans ideology on social media.

No sooner had Linehan disembarked his flight from Arizona than he was apprehended by armed police. In a post on Substack, he explained that his arrest was for three posts on X. One of the tweets read: ‘If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls.’

The arrest at Heathrow was made by officers from the Met Police Aviation Unit. There are only 5,700 or so deployable armed police officers in England and Wales at present. Yet five of them were sent to arrest Linehan for his social-media posts. However you slice it, this was complete overkill – and a massive waste of police time. Worse, as a condition of bail, Linehan has been banned from using X. ‘A legal gag order designed to shut me up’ is how he describes it.*

Related: Graham Linehan accuser ‘is disgraced transgender police officer.’

A disgraced transgender police officer is believed to have reported gender-critic Father Ted creator Graham Linehan to the police over his social media posts.

Former Pc Lynsay Watson, who was born Alex Horwood, was sacked by Leicestershire Police for gross misconduct in 2023 after allegedly harassing a free speech campaigner and critic of gender ideology.

An anonymous social media account, believed to be linked to Watson, boasted in April this year of reporting Linehan, the Father Ted writer and gender sceptic, to the police over several social media posts he made about transgender issues. The account encouraged other transgender activists to do the same.

Watson has a well-documented history of calling on police forces to pursue criminal investigations of campaigners who are sceptical of the belief that self-identification, and not biological sex, determines what a man or woman is.

* It’s not exactly working, as Linehan isn’t backing down:

FIREWORKS ERUPT AT HOUSE JUDICIARY HEARING AS JORDAN, RASKIN, AND NIGEL FARAGE SCORCH EUROPE—AND EACH OTHER:

Raskin pointed to alleged examples of censorship under Trump, concluding, “There’s a free speech crisis in America today. But there’s no free speech crisis in Britain.”

In a brief response, Jordan was ready with a sharp rejoinder: “The gentleman alleges there’s no free speech in America under Donald Trump while his staff member holds up countless articles criticizing the Trump administration.”

Farage opened his testimony with a strong dose of irony. “I’m delighted to reacquaint with the charming Mr. Raskin.”

“Delightful testimony you gave me earlier on with your speech,” he continued. “But hey, that’s fine, you can say what you like, I don’t care, because that’s what free speech is.”

Farage pointed to the U.K.’s recent arrest of an Irish comedian at Heathrow Airport for posting supposedly transphobic tweets. “This could happen to any American man or woman that goes to Heathrow that has said things online that the British government and the British police don’t like,” he said.

“At what point did we become North Korea? Well, I think the Irish comedy writer found that out two days ago at Heathrow Airport,” he concluded.

More from Ace of Spades: Nigel Farage Testifies to Congress About the End of Free Speech in the UK. “The [British] government is broke with crippling debt, yet they continue to spend billions to put up third-world murder hobos in four star restaurants and offer people free cars if they just claim they have some kind of ‘disability,’ which can be as minor as ’anxiety’ or ‘depression.’”

IT’S COME TO THIS: Black Comedian Paints Himself White, Goes to NASCAR, Doesn’t Find What He Expects.

Druski [whose real name is Andrew Desbordes] is getting justified kudos for his astonishingly convincing disguise, which he used to go to a NASCAR race and pose as a rambunctious Southern white guy, but the really impressive work here seems to have been done by his makeup artist (or more likely, makeup team). A clear cultural agenda mars the performance of Druski himself.

Some people have asked if Druski’s act means that blackface is no longer the heinous crime it has been portrayed as being over the last few years, but the larger question is why it is culturally acceptable on the left to make fun of Southern white men but of no other group of people anywhere on the planet.

And it gets worse. The Post notes that at one point, the white redneck Druski “disgustedly spits at the feet of a black man walking past him while leaning against the hood of a car.” Nor is that all: “In another moment, he stops his truck beside a black man and asks him ‘You lost, boy?’ When the man tells him he’s going to the NASCAR race, Druski leans out the window, spits, and tell him to ‘find something safe to do, boy.’”

Now, this video shows Druski’s character interacting with a good many NASCAR fans, and yet Druski himself is the only one who is racist. The odds that any actual person doing any genuinely racist thing would have been included are only around 100%, and yet Druski can only show himself being racist toward black people, and only when no one else is around. He is apparently trying hard to show NASCAR fans, Southern white Americans, and patriots in general as a bunch of racists, but he can’t find anyone to flesh out the stereotype, so he has to do it himself.

Last year, the Hollywood Reporter noted: Ben Stiller on Why He Doubts ‘Tropic Thunder’ Could Get Made Today: “Edgier Comedy Is Just Harder to Do.”

Tropic Thunder, starring and directed by Stiller, also starred Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson. The film follows a group of egotistical actors making a big-budget war movie who are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying.

However, the Zoolander actor pointed to Downey’s now-controversial role as one of the reasons the movie likely wouldn’t get made today. The Oscar winner plays Kirk Lazarus, who undergoes “pigmentation alteration” surgery, as his character puts it, in order to play a Black soldier in a film.

“The idea of Robert playing that character who’s playing an African American character, I mean, incredibly dicey,” Stiller added. “Even at the time, of course, it was dicey too. The only reason we attempted it was I felt like the joke was very clear in terms of who that joke was on — actors trying to do anything to win awards. But now, in this environment, I don’t even know if I would have ventured to do it, to tell you the truth. I’m being honest.”

Over to you, Druski.

UPDATE: There was cosplaying in DC as well today to spotlight the dystopian authoritarian hellscape that is Trump’s America:

RAVING AND DROOLING: Roger Waters Labels Ozzy Osbourne’s Career ‘Idiocy and Nonsense.’

Waters then brought Osbourne into the conversation: “… Or Ozzy Osbourne, who just died, bless him, in his, whatever that state that he was in his whole life, we’ll never know. Although, he was all over the TV for hundreds of years with his idiocy and nonsense.”

He didn’t stop there, moving on to attack Osbourne’s music: “The music, I have no idea, I couldn’t give a fuck. I don’t care about Black Sabbath, I never did, I have no interest in…. ‘Wahhhh!!!’ (spoken while sticking his tongue out and doing an impression that looked more like Gene Simmons than Osbourne) and biting the heads off chickens or whatever they do. I couldn’t care less.”

When informed that Osbourne (accidentally, it should have been noted) bit the head off a bat, not a chicken, the Pink Floyd legend was even more revolted: “Oh my God, that’s even worse, isn’t it? I don’t know, is it worse to bite the head off a bat or a chicken?”

In sharp contrast, David Gilmour is thoughtful and articulate in his nearly two-hour interview with musician/producer/YouTuber Rick Beato about his musical processes over the decades:

THE BARI MARKET:

David [Ellison’s] offer for The Free Press is expected to be well above the site’s most recent $100 million valuation, but well below the $200 million figure that was recently floated in the Financial Times. (That was an absurd ask; The Free Press does $15 million in annual subscription revenue, and Bari’s politically charged content makes it hard to scale the advertising business. Plus, there’s no tech stack—it’s all on Substack.) Either way, it will land Weiss a king’s ransom just a little over five years after her dramatic departure from the Times. The deal is not done yet, of course, but, as a source with knowledge of the negotiations told me this afternoon, it is “on the 1-yard line.”

It’s Not Dan Rather’s Network Anymore…

As part of the deal, I am told David plans to give Bari a role at CBS News that would, among other things, task his fellow Millennial with guiding the editorial direction of the division. Bari’s avowedly pro-Israel and anti-woke worldview—not to mention her broadly shit-kicking anti-establishment disposition—would inevitably inspire blowback from various corners of the newsroom, and could dramatically change the editorial posture and reputation of one of the most storied, and certainly self-important, institutions in American journalism. For David, that’s likely part of the point.

If this actually happens, the meltdowns at CBS News will be astonishing to watch; recall the struggle sessions there last fall over Tony Dokoupil actually committing journalism in an interview with leftist Ta-Nehisi Coates.

ROGER SIMON: Living Forever: Putin, Xi and Djokovic.

I woke up this morning to this NY Post (the only paper I bother with nowadays) article: “Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping ponder unsettling ambitions in rare hot-mic moment: ‘Achieve immortality’”. It tells us:

“The unnerving moment was caught as Putin and Xi walked alongside North Korea’s Kim Jong Un as the trio of tyrants viewed a military parade in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

“‘Biotechnology is continuously developing,’ Putin’s translator could be heard saying on a livestream broadcast on Chinese state media.

“‘Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and [you can] even achieve immortality.’

“‘Some predict that in this century humans may live to 150 years old,” Xi’s translator responded, adding at another point: “Earlier, people rarely lived to 70, but these days at 70 years you are still a child.”

Oh, those dictators—what they chitchat about!

Well, actually. they chitchat about something most people of a “certain age” think about rather frequently, their morality, including yours truly who is about nine years the senior of these despots who are 72.

Nevertheless, the characterization “unnerving” above is arguably an understatement. The idea of Putin and Xi going on for another 80 years is anything but reassuring. Most of us wish they had never been around in the first place or, failing that, would disappear in the next ten minutes.

They’ve got the right idea — as Glenn noted in one of his Subtacks, Harvard aging researcher David Sinclair “doesn’t talk about immortality, but he did opine in a recent interview that the first person who will live to 150 is alive now. And in fact, with good luck, people reading this essay might live that long. More importantly, they might live that long in good health.” But given the events of 2020, who knows to what lengths Vlad and Xi’s scientists will go to achieve such goals?

THAT’S WHAT XI SAID! ABC Gets Hot and Bothered By China’s Show of ‘Patriotism and Power.’

Since their parent company Disney was beholden to the Chinese Communist Party, even giving a “special thanks” to those carrying out a genocide against Uighurs in the credits of Mulan, ABC foreign correspondent Britt Clennett beclowned herself and the network during Wednesday’s Good Morning America. With prime seating in Tiananmen Square, Clennett had a huge smile on her face as she was overcome with awe at the military equipment and being able to lay her eyes on Chinese dictator Xi Jinping.

“Yeah, just a remarkable sight to see here in Beijing. China very much flexing its military muscle, with the latest generation of ballistic missiles and drones in a carefully choreographed parade designed to show its patriotism and power,” Clennett boasted to co-host Michael Strahan a head of the video portion of her report.

To be fair, it’s not all that surprising to see a Disney employee offering up such high praise to her CEO:

(Besides, I’m pretty sure CNN has the lock on sucking up to Pyongyang.)

SOMEBODY SET UP US THE BOMB: Rep. Jamie Raskin Says Trump Wants to Shrink the Size and Scope of Gov’t Just Like Stalin.

Raskin knows that Stalin’s employee layoffs were rather more permanent in nature, but he doesn’t care.

Alas though, many years from now, Trump’s obit in the New York Times won’t be anywhere near as glowing as the encomium they wrote in 1953 for one of the 20th century’s most bloodthirsty tyrants: Stalin Rose From Czarist Oppression to Transform Russia Into Mighty Socialist State.

Related: Calling Trump ‘Hitler’ Has Done Permanent Damage to the Moral Realm. “The abuse of language is a fundamental characteristic of the Left. Leftists have done this not only to ‘Hitler,’ ‘Nazi’ and ‘fascist’ but to ‘genocide,’ ‘apartheid,’ ‘racist’ and virtually every other term connoting evil. It started with Stalin calling Trotsky a fascist and it continues to this day.”

TO BE FAIR, THEY ARE A BLESSING OF LIBERTY: David French Will Say Anything For A Paycheck.

The evil right-wing media just made up a totally fake controversy about Cracker Barrel, you see.

Every paragraph of French’s column is a strawman. Every claim is obviously false. He’s not even sort of describing surface-level reality. David French now gets paid to point at cows and say, “That’s definitely not a cow.” He’s a fabulist, and a talentless one. His sole value is that he gets to cosplay “conservative” while mindlessly doing all of the dumb leftist tropes, giving correct-thinking cadre the very small thrill of feeling righteous about the people they hate. He’s a professional reassurance artist: Yes, New York Times readers, people you disagree with are always wrong and never have a point about anything. Thanks, David, here’s a nickel.

So.

You must be blind and amnesiac, because French explains this about the “good jeans” thing with Sydney Sweeney, the other recent branding controversy that he discusses alongside the Cracker Barrel thing: “There was no actual groundswell of opposition to Sweeney.”

No, seriously: “There was no actual groundswell of opposition to Sweeney.” David French just wrote this sentence and got it published in The New York Times.

Right-wingers just made it all up, calculatedly stoking outrage about something that wasn’t even real: “But if there’s a conflict between telling the truth and stoking outrage, time and again, the right chooses outrage.” Read these paragraphs carefully, and watch how casually this man lies:

Exit quote: “This man is a shameful figure. He never so much as passes truth in the street. His schtick is too obvious now to pretend that he’s doing anything but a ‘real conservative’ minstrel show for pay. Imagine living that way.”

On the other hand, a lot of people in the Northeast Corridor have made an excellent living doing just that for decades:

MIND THE GAP:

I’ve written this article to try to collate the information I’ve gathered on the present state of the UK as an American observer. I am someone who, I like to believe, generally avoids the hysteric tendencies that are so common to online politics. That being said, it is very difficult for me to look at the situation I have laid out for you above and not be deeply perturbed.

I do not know what is going to happen in the United Kingdom in the next few years, but I am very confident that the present system will not last. Something will surely give, and when it does each piece of the situation I have just laid out for you will metastasize in rapid fashion, throwing one of the most clownish and intolerable political castes that presently exist anywhere on the planet into a nightmarish situation that far more competent men would barely be able to navigate successfully.

This all being said, with the magnitude of the rot laid bare it is almost impossible to not be bullish in a certain sense. If the core Anglo-Saxon population of the UK can last this long under such degraded and perverse conditions, if they can maintain a functional society in the face of such dysfunction, then it is hard to imagine what they will be able to do once the boot is taken off their necks.

Read the whole thing.

AND THEN BATMAN SHOUTED, GOTHAM CITY IS MAGA COUNTRY! Jeffrey Wright Slams Backlash to Him Playing Commissioner Gordon in ‘The Batman’ as ‘F–ing Racist and Stupid’: ‘It’s Absent All Logic.’

Ever since Lady Ghostbusters in 2016, Hollywood has attempted to gin up controversy by pitting fans against fans, and promoting inferior movies by screaming sexism! or racism! But in this case, there was no backlash to Wright playing Commissioner Gordon, nor was there any controversy over Wright playing Felix Leiter in the Daniel Craig James Bond movies. The only controversy over Robert Pattinson’s The Batman that I saw was, as John Nolte wrote in 2022, we’ve seen all this, “Many Times Before.”

We’ve also seen Wright’s attempt to gin up controversy before, but in the past, it actually existed on social media:

FIVE TIMES CBS WAS CAUGHT DECEPTIVELY EDITING INTERVIEWS WITH POLITICIANS: Why Can’t CBS Stop Deceptively Editing Interviews?

Yet again, the propagandists at CBS have found themselves in the midst of another deceptive editing scandal. On Sunday, the network was caught editing out the substantive portion of one of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s responses to a question on Face the Nation.

But this incident is just the latest in CBS’s lengthy record of journalistic malfeasance. Let’s look back at some of the worst cases.

FIFTH CIRCUIT RULES AGAINST TRUMP ADMIN ON ITS USE OF AEA TO REMOVE TDA MEMBERS:

Late Tuesday evening, the 5th Circuit handed down its decision in the case now styled W.M.M. v. Trump (previously styled as A.A.R.P. v. Trump) regarding the Trump administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) to remove purported Tren de Aragua (TdA) members from the U.S. To cut to the chase, the court held that the administration improperly invoked the AEA to justify removing the purported TdA members because “we find no invasion or predatory incursion.”

This case has had a complicated procedural history that’s involved several notable decisions and a foray to the Supreme Court, which resulted in a surprising Easter weekend ruling that sent the case back to the 5th Circuit to determine two things:

(1) all the normal preliminary injunction factors, including likelihood of success on the merits, as to the named [Petitioners’] underlying habeas claims that the AEA does not authorize their removal pursuant to the President’s March 14, 2025, Proclamation, and (2) the issue of what notice is due, as to the putative class’s due process claims against summary removal.

Note that the following is still satire — at least for the moment:

CHARLES COOKE: England’s Arrest of Graham Linehan Was an Act of Calculated Tyranny.

The nature of his arrest renders the contrast as clear as it could possibly be. Yesterday, Linehan was in the United States — living his life, sharing his opinions, enjoying his independence. Today, he is in England — under observation, subject to surveillance, at liberty only if he vows not to speak where people might hear. This is not, I’m afraid to say, one of those questions of taste: In this matter, America has got it right, and England has got it wrong. What was done to Graham Linehan was an act of calculated tyranny of the sort to which the British have become far too accustomed in recent decades. In other circumstances, they would be likely able to see this. Were an Englishman to fly to Russia and be arrested for making jokes or pointed comments, the contours would at once seem familiar. But with transgenderism as the topic, “hate” as the justification, and the United States as the foil, a myopia descends.

I cannot quite put my finger on why, but, all in all, it seems to me wholly appropriate that, immediately after Linehan was arrested for speaking, he was taken to an NHS-run hospital to recover. That, evidently, is the new British mode. In the year 2025, Britain has a parliament that can meet to help you kill yourself, but not to protect your speech; an exchequer that can pluck the population’s feathers from 9,000 different angles, but that has no interest in generating wealth; and a network of police forces that are incapable of solving the most sordid crimes imaginable, but that are sufficiently well-staffed to guarantee that if an outspoken Irish comedian steps off a plane from Arizona, he will be met by enough lawmen to fill a small office. During the worst days of Covid-19, the British government instructed the population to sacrifice every last human desire it had to ensure the survival and comfort of their state-provided nurses. Mercifully, that virus has mostly disappeared. Regrettably, it has been replaced by another one — and, this time, there is no antidote available but sustained mass revolt.

And one way or another, it’s coming.

MATT MARGOLIS: We Should Be Very Afraid of What’s Happening in the Democratic Party.

The Democratic Party is quietly undergoing a seismic shift that should alarm anyone who still values political sanity in America. The party is transitioning into something younger, even more extreme, radical, and dangerous than what we’ve already endured. The old guard may have been misguided, but what’s coming next promises to be far worse for America.

The latest casualty is none other than Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), the Manhattan congressman who just announced his retirement after more than three decades of loyal service to the left’s cause. His exit is just one sign of a dangerous purge inside the party, replacing seasoned lawmakers with a new breed of radical agitators who openly reject America’s political traditions.

This isn’t youthful idealism; it’s a calculated assault on the foundations of our democracy, driven by socialists who see the system itself as illegitimate. What Democrats are dressing up as “change” is in reality a hostile takeover by extremists bent on tearing everything down and remaking the country in their own warped image. And if they succeed, the America that follows will be unrecognizable and far worse for it.

“I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people,” Friedman once said. “The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.”

I started to say that when Friedman said that, there were many more grownups in Washington. But Friedman apparently first uttered that quote in 1975 or thereabouts, shortly after furious Democrats and their media staged a coup d’état against Richard Nixon. Plus ça change.
