WHAT IS SHAVUOT ABOUT? Jeff Dunetz of The Lid explains it all for us Gentiles, most of whom may not realize it begins tomorrow. Hint: It has to do with the giving of the Torah, one of the foundational documents of Western civilization.

APOLOGIES FOR THE MIS-SPELLING OF SHAVUOT.

DON’T OVERLOOK WHAT MATT WALSH HAS DONE HERE:  “These African men laugh – they literally laugh – at the notion a woman might have a penis. They laugh because it is a laughable premise (again, to everyone outside the West and its fabricated gender enlightenment). So how can the American Left respond to this? Obviously what these men are saying and doing makes a mockery of the left’s gender ideology. If said by a white American male, it would be considered the height of bigotry. But these aren’t white American men. These are black men (and women) of a different culture. Progressives may worship the idol of gender, but they also worship the idol of diversity and multiculturalism. By their own rules, their dismissal of, or disagreement with the lived experiences of another people group – particularly black-skinned groups – is racist and Anglo-centric.”

CAN FAITH BE BASED ON CONVICTION: I say yes, if there is experience, evidence and logic as its foundation. You may think differently and that’s fine. Tell me why you agree or disagree (without the snark, please).

For those who may be interested, these thoughts are in great part a result of my increasing interest in Thomas Reid, the 18th Century Scots “Common Sense” philosopher, an important critic of Locke and an essential antidote to Hume. And what a shame it is that in our age these three are not required reading on campus.

UPDATE: As of 4:15 pm, there are a bunch of thoughtful and insightful comments (on both sides of the faith vs. science debate) that I very much appreciate. And then there are comments by jim_m and twb who just Plato the crowd! I am relieved, however, that they didn’t share their dirty Lenin or I would have had to give them both lower Marx.

EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY: The world may be careening toward a 1970s-style energy crisis – or worse.

Current and former energy officials tell CNN they worry that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in the wake of years of underinvestment in the energy sector have sent the world careening into a crisis that will rival or even exceed the oil crises of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Unlike those infamous episodes, this one is not contained to oil.

“Now we have an oil crisis, a gas crisis and an electricity crisis at the same time,” Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency watchdog group, told Der Spiegel in an interview published this week. “This energy crisis is much bigger than the oil crises of the 1970s and 1980s. And it will probably last longer.”

Left unsaid: Underinvestment is largely due to overregulation and government-fueled expectations about levels of “renewable” energy production that never materialized.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Lunatic Fringe Thinks Pride Parades Are Good for Kids. “Gosh, it seems like just yesterday that I was writing about being really annoyed by Pride Month even though it just began. Less than a full three days into this year’s version I’m already feeling like I’m going to be drowning in rainbow-colored inanity.”

WOEING: NASA just bought the rest of the space station crew flights from SpaceX. “The announcement also suggests that SpaceX will fly more than twice as many crews to the space station than the other partner in NASA’s commercial crew program, Boeing. Under the new agreement, SpaceX would fly 14 crewed missions to the station on Crew Dragon, and Boeing would fly six during the lifetime of the station.”

Boeing’s Starliner has been a big disappointment.

CHUTZPAH: ACLU sues Johnny Depp seeking legal expenses for Amber Heard case. “The ACLU shouldn’t have been surprised to be called to testify in the trial, or to turn over documents about the donation. It was already involved from the beginning of the case since ACLU staff helped Amber Heard write the op-ed published in the Washington Post in 2018. That op-ed started this whole legal battle in the first place.”

Plus: “Remember when the ACLU was just an organization that fought in free speech battles and First Amendment rights for anyone and everyone? Now its reputation takes hits for its move to politicize issues. Why were they involved in the op-ed in the first place? There’s no indication that the piece was Heard’s idea. It was the ACLU’s idea to promote gender justice issues during the Trump administration in 2018.”

All the institutions have been corrupted.

A FOUR MONTH “INVESTIGATION.” ACTUALLY, THEY JUST WAITED UNTIL THE STUDENTS WERE GONE TO MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT. Georgetown Law School Reinstates Ilya Shapiro Following Four Month Investigation Into Justice Jackson Tweet. Then the decision was based on a technicality — that Shapiro technically wasn’t an employeee yet when he tweeted — that was apparent on day one.

A school that’s that afraid of its own students is admitting the wrong people, and hiring the wrong people as administrators.

DECOUPLING: Amazon to pull Kindle out of China, other businesses to remain. “Other Western internet companies, including Microsoft’s LinkedIn, Yahoo and Airbnb Inc have cut services in or retreated completely from China in recent months, amid government efforts to tighten control over online content and new laws targeting data sharing and customer privacy.”
