ZODIAC 1, LEFTIST HARPIES Ø: Wild: Audience members on The View try to shout down Ted Cruz, Whoopi Goldberg kicks them out.
UPDATE (FROM GLENN): Ted Cruz gets the last laugh at Yankees Stadium. “The Astros knocked off the Yankees in four games and will face the Phillies in the World Series. The first game is Friday. Yes, I fully expect to see Cruz in the stands at Minute Maid Park cheering on the Astros. Houston loves the Astros and they have had a spectacular season and post-season. Too bad, so sad, Yankees. Not really. The senator did a little poking at the New York fans by wearing an Astros orange shirt. . . . New York hasn’t had a World Series appearance in 13 years.”

K-12 IMPLOSION UPDATE: Math Scores Fell in Nearly Every State, and Reading Dipped on National Exam.
U.S. students in most states and across almost all demographic groups have experienced troubling setbacks in both math and reading, according to an authoritative national exam released on Monday, offering the most definitive indictment yet of the pandemic’s impact on millions of schoolchildren.
In math, the results were especially devastating, representing the steepest declines ever recorded on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation’s report card, which tests a broad sampling of fourth and eighth graders and dates to the early 1990s.
In the test’s first results since the pandemic began, math scores for eighth graders fell in nearly every state. A meager 26 percent of eighth graders were proficient, down from 34 percent in 2019.
Faced with these results, the Gray Lady is terrified of Republicans pouncing and seizing:
The test results could be seized as political fodder — just before the midterms — to re-litigate the debate over how long schools should have stayed closed, an issue that galvanized many parents and teachers.

MICHAEL WALSH: ‘What an Artist Dies in Me!’
Art, like the Christ figure, has conquered death. This is its power, which cannot be reset. This is why religious and secular authorities fear it, seek to diminish it, try to co-opt it, reduce it to a grubby economic transaction, send it to a prison camp, hang it. Like Boccaccio’s Decameronians, holed up in a fashionable villa to avoid the Black Death but with absolutely no storytelling ability, they await and encourage the collapse of contemporary civilization so that they might improve it, along with their own fortunes. That artists subscribe, consciously or not, to the Nietzschean doctrine of eternal recurrence never seems to occur to them; even if they’ve never read Cloud Atlas, perhaps they should harken to the sextet by Vyvyan Ayrs.
Artists neither mourn nor celebrate their subjects; rather, they exhibit their own power to resurrect the dead or summon the nonexistent to squalling life, whether their characters are sacred or profane. Profoundly indifferent to morality, yet completely human, art exists on its own terms, open to all to inspect, embrace, imitate, or reject. From the Roman Empire to the seventeenth-century Venetian court; from the Zauberberg a hundred years ago to Davos Dorf today, many have tried to geld it or beat it into submission, but art and artists will always have the last word. There is no Reset, neither by gods nor bonzes, but there is always rebirth. And that is forever the province of the glory, jest, and riddle of the world—Man.

IT’S A BLOODBATH: Chinese stocks crash after Xi Jinping cements absolute power.
In the first day of trading since Xi Jinping effectively secured ultimate power for life at the CCP 20th National Congress, Chinese stocks have crashed.
The Hang Seng Chinese Enterprise index is down 6.7 percent from Friday’s close, and in trading on Monday hit a low of 5,112 – the lowest level in this history of the Index which was launched in 2005.
The broader Hang Seng Index also feel sharply on Monday, down 6 percent to levels last seen during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.
“This is a level of panic that appears inconsistent with recent developments. Not even stronger than expected econ numbers could stem the tide. But who can blame them? COVID Zero plus US tensions plus post National Party Congress uncertainties proving too much now,” said Brian Tycangco from Stansberry Research.

GREAT MOMENTS IN OBJECTIVE JOURNALISM FROM THE AP: One hug and one selfie at a time, Biden’s mission to connect.
One handshake, one hug and one selfie at a time. If President Joe Biden could greet every American this way, longtime allies say, his approval ratings would soar.
Biden has never been at his best in big speeches, where his delivery can be stilted, his stories sometimes meandering. It’s the end of his speech* that often marks the beginning of Biden’s favorite part of an event — the rope line, in the parlance of political operatives. He whirls around, scans the crowd and zeroes in on his first target for a one-on-one connection.
It might be with someone like Tim Eichinger, a Milwaukee brewery owner who asked Biden a question during a TV town hall 20 months ago, and has since had a one-on-one videoconference with the president and seen Biden send a couple of letters to his grandson.
It might be a small child — Biden likes to carry some cash so he can discretely slip kids a few dollars** and encourage them to buy ice cream. It might be someone who stutters — they come in for special attention from the president.
AP morphed into Soviet-era propaganda to cover for the doddering Biden so slowly, I hardly even noticed. Compare that to the headline that AP conjured during the middle of George W. Bush’s last year in office: Everything seemingly is spinning out of control.
* When frequently, a befuddled Biden can’t figure out how to walk away from the podium.
** That’s one way to describe Creepy Joe’s actions.

THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE WHITE DODGE CHALLENGER FROM VANISHING POINT:
Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante created the script for Vanishing Point in the late 1960s. Infante had read a news article depicting a high-speed police chase, where the suspect refused to stop and crashed into a police barrier, ultimately killing him. This served as the main inspiration behind his screenplay, which eventually found is way into the hands of director Richard C. Sarafian, who became highly interested in the project. Sarafian then pitched the film to an executive at 20th Century Fox, but strangely, was given the green-light on the condition that the main character, Kowalski, must die at the end of the film.
The filming of Vanishing Point started in the summer of 1970. Although the shoot was originally scheduled for 60 days, budget concerns caused this timeframe to be shortened to only 22 days. The nature of the plot necessitated a wide range of filming locations, spanning across four states. Altogether, Vanishing Point was filmed on location throughout Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. Famed stunt driver Carey Loftin was hired to perform the majority of the film’s intense chase scenes, and his prowess is quite evident in the movie. In addition to Vanishing Point, Loftin also coordinated stunts and drove for some of the greatest cinematic car chases of all time, including Bullitt, The French Connection, Smokey and the Bandit, Duel, and Christine, just to name a few.
Great car chases, and a great cast (Barry Newman, Cleavon Little, Charlotte Rampling, and Dean Jagger), despite the stereotypical ’70s bummer ending, à la Easy Rider:
BORIS JOHNSON WITHDRAWS FROM UK LEADERSHIP RACE TO REPLACE LIZ TRUSS, PAVING THE WAY FOR RISHI SUNAK TO BECOME PM: Sunak has said the UK faces a “profound economic challenge” in his first comments since being announced as the next prime minister.
He said he is “humbled and honoured” after he was selected by Conservative MPs to lead the party, and the nation, describing it as the “greatest privilege in my life”.
Mr Sunak also paid tribute to outgoing prime minister Liz Truss for her “dedicated public service”.
“The United Kingdom is a great country but there is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge,” he said in a speech delivered from the Conservative party headquarters in Westminster.
“We now need stability and unity and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together.”
The former chancellor won the keys to Number 10 two months after losing out on the top job to Ms Truss.
His comeback represents a number of symbolic milestones: He will be the UK’s first Hindu prime minister, the first of Asian heritage, and the youngest for more than 200 years at the age of 42.
Sunak faces additional challenges: “an economic crisis, a parliamentary party that has been divided by recent events, a National Health Service that is at full stretch even before winter has begun and a war in Europe. To add to that, he starts more than thirty points behind Labour in the polls. His challenge now is to build an internal coalition. He must show that his will be a broad-based cabinet that will represent the talent in the party. He then needs to show a country which is thoroughly fed up with political drama that there will now be a period of competent, good government that begins to address the nation’s many problems.”
VDH GOES 20 MINUTES INTO THE FUTURE: Will ‘Democracy Die in Darkness’ After November?
But there are other reasons the Left will become livid and terrified when they lose the Congress.
They fear not what Republican majorities may actually do, but what they would do if they were Republicans and suddenly gained the Congress after being smeared by the party in power.
That is, the Democrats fear that the Republicans might remember what the Left did while in legislative control and would see that as the new model for an incoming majority.
Consequently, will a Republican Senate simply refuse to confirm Biden’s ultra-left appointments and judges, on the theory they will inevitably do the damage of a Merrick Garland or Alejandro Mayorkas or prove sanctimonious nincompoops like a Pete Buttigieg or Xavier Becerra?
Will the Republicans subpoena an array of left-wing activists and Democratic functionaries? Will jail sentences await any who retry the Eric Holder gambit of congressional defiance?
Will they adopt the January 6 committee protocols?
That is, will Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announce he is following the precedents of Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and therefore reluctantly must:
- Automatically deny “extremists,” such as members of “the squad,” from any congressional committee appointments;
- Sometimes veto any Democrat minority leader’s recommendations for House committee assignments;
- Run simultaneous congressional investigations of 1) politicized leadership at the wayward FBI and Department of Justice; 2) the labyrinth of conflicts of interest within our federal health bureaucracy, starting with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci; 3) the tax liabilities, false statements, and sources of income of the Biden family; 4) “insurrections,” starting with the role of social media, Antifa, and Black Lives Matter during the 120 days in 2020 of uninterrupted rioting, looting, and arson.
Undertake a real probe of the entire January 6 riot and its aftermath, using newly inherited operating procedures to subpoena high-ranking bureaucrats, left-wing pundits, Democratic National Committee operatives and elected officials to discover: 1) why the breakdown in Capitol Hill police security; 2) why the suppression of information about the officer killing of Ashli Babbitt, and the death from natural causes of Officer Brian Sicknick; 3) why all videos, emails, and communications concerning the riot have not been released; 4) what was the role, if any, of FBI informants; 5) why were dozens of the accused held without bail, without charges filed, and subject to nonstop jail harassment?
Would Democrats—if they were Republicans in January 2023—vote to end the filibuster?
Will Joe Biden, who all summer long blasted the filibuster as a racist relic, flip in 2023 and claim it is the bastion of the republic when the Democrats are in the senate minority?
Will Democrats object if the Republican House becomes impeachment-hungry, following the 2019-2021 precedent?

JULIE KELLY: Race-Baiting Celebrity J6 Cop Once Involved in Race-Related Lawsuit.
Fanone has lots to say in his memoir—heavily sprinkled with obscenities—while ranting about Donald Trump and his supporters. (Fanone begins with a brazen lie that Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died of “wounds” sustained on January 6.)
He condemns Republican lawmakers for refusing to go along with the “insurrection” narrative and he names names: A secretly recorded meeting with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is described in the book. “While you were on the phone with [Trump], I was getting the shit kicked out of me, almost losing my life,” Fanone told McCarthy in 2021. “The way that he, you know, saying this is what happens when you steal an election. Go home. I love you. What the f*** is that!?”
But one name is missing from Fanone’s profane screed: Michael A. Maddox.
And for good reason. In 2014, the District of Columbia settled a lawsuit filed against two D.C. Metro police officers for violating the civil rights of Maddox, a black attorney working at the time in the legal department at Howard University. The city paid Maddox $175,000 in damages.
One of the officers named in the lawsuit was Michael Fanone.

JUST NBC THE RACISM!
Shot:
Amidst all the Sturm und Drang surrounding [the 1980 episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Malcolm McDowell], Eddie Murphy’s network television debut slipped by without the slightest notice. It was just as well, because Eddie himself was humiliated by it.
He appeared in a sketch called “In Search of the Negro Republican,” which happened to be the one genuinely witty moment on the McDowell show. Written by David Sheffield, it was a parody of the old Mutual of Omaha nature series, Wild Kingdom. Charles Rocket played Marlin Perkins, Joe Piscopo his intrepid assistant, Jim Fowler. Fowler, in hopes of flushing out that rarest of political beasts, the Negro Republican, impersonated a waiter at a cocktail party, casually asking the black guests questions that would reveal their political sympathies. When he discovered a black Republican, a stuffy gentleman in a three-piece suit, he tagged him so that his migration patterns could be followed.
The humiliation for Eddie came not from the substance of the sketch, but from the part he played in it: He was an extra, sitting on a couch, seen only for the briefest moment on-camera, lost in the cocktail-party crowd. He didn’t have a line. The Negro Republican in the three-piece suit was played by an actor hired especially for that one show.

Chaser: At Red State, today: MSNBC’s Tiffany Cross Rails Against Minority Candidates for Not Being Democrats.
During a Saturday morning broadcast with former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, Cross slammed minority Republican candidates for supposedly not being “voices of color,” whatever the hell that means.
“Despite the fact the GOP’s racist rhetoric has not slowed at all, they have begun hyping up, get this, their ‘diverse’ candidates,” she said while forming air quotes with her hands. “According to numbers provided by the National Republican Congressional Committee, 80 Republican incumbents or candidates on the ballot next month are women, 33 are Latino, 28 are black, 13 are Asian and three are native Americans.”
“But faces of color do not always equate to voices of color,” Cross added. “As our own NBC’s Scott Wong points out in his good reporting, the leadership will almost be entirely composed of white men. Really, this sounds more like the political equivalent of ‘some of my best friends are black.’”
“I will kick it up with you, Michael,” Cross continued. “Because, you and I have had this conversation so many times on camera and off camera, you are my only Republican friend, I think, my friend.
Maybe it’s time to widen your circle of friends to explore some more diverse and inclusive viewpoints, Tiffany. Especially after Steele called MAGA Republicans “lice, fleas, and blood-sucking ticks” on MSNBC this past Tuesday.

Some “safe seats” aren’t very safe anymore for suddenly vulnerable Democrats, and that has panicked PACs moving campaign dollars to protect previously invulnerable seats.
We’re down to the wire in Election 2022, and stuff just got real.
Today’s news takes us to deep blue Oregon, where onetime shoo-in Kurt Schrader just got the rug pulled out from under him by his own Democrat Party as he fights off Republican Amy Ryan Courser. According to AdImpact (as spotted by Josh Kraushaar), party ad spending for Schrader in the 5th district was shifted to the 6th to boost Andrea Salinas against Republican Mike Erickson.
Maybe you’re thinking this kind of thing happens all the time, and it does.
But it doesn’t often happen that Democrats appear to be writing off a district that Presidentish Joe Biden won in 2020 by nine points, to shore up a district that Biden won by 13 points.
If 10-and-up is the Democrats’ new firewall, they’re in bigger trouble than even I imagined. Complicating things even more for Oregon Democrats, gubernatorial candidate Tina Kotek (looking to replace the outgoing and execrable Kate Brown) regularly polls behind Republican Christine Drazan.
Exit question: Just how bad will the midterms be for the Democrats?

JUST A PINCH OF RADICAL CHIC: Insurrection: New York Times Promotes Sabotage, ‘Guerrilla Warfare’ to End Fossil Fuels.
In January of 2021, The New York Times promoted a book titled How To Blow Up a Pipeline by transparently radical author Andreas Malm. On Thursday, the Times directly promoted Malm by publishing his guest essay under the headline “History May Absolve the Soup Throwers.” That’s too tender a headline, for Malm thinks soup throwing at a Van Gogh painting isn’t optimal:
I tend to think sabotage is most effective when it is precise and gritty. When activists from the same group smashed gas stations in April this year, they hit the nail on the head. Gasoline, unlike a van Gogh painting, is a fuel of global warming. There is a whole planetary layer of stations, pipelines, platforms, derricks, terminals, mines and shafts that must be shut down to save humanity and other life-forms. When governments refuse to undertake this work, it is up to the rest of us to initiate it. That is the rationale for sabotage: to aim straight for the bags of coal.
While the Times routinely rails against the “insurrection” on January 6 and sees all “domestic terrorism” as a right-wing problem, it promotes a climate insurrection and left-wing domestic terrorism. Malm explicitly champions sabotage and violence — even guerrilla warfare! — as an efficient path to ending fossil fuels[.]

GOODER AND HARDER: The town John Fetterman ran is in ruins.
After reading about “Braddock’s Defeat,” which seems to be an ongoing saga in this sad place, and spotting only a handful of Fetterman for Senate signs (there were probably twice as many Terrible Towel signs supporting the Pittsburgh Steelers), I visited a small grocery/general store. I asked three men shopping there if they thought Fetterman made their town better while he was mayor. Adam glanced at me with a look that said, “Are you kidding me?”
“Hell no,” he drawled. “Look at this place!”
I have truly never seen a more miserable place than Braddock, Pennsylvania. Google Images gives you the general idea, but until you see street after street of utter neglect, garbage, and decrepitude, you can’t get a sense of how bad it really is.
Yet Fetterman is above it all. Literally. He and his family live in a huge Braddock loft they spent nine months renovating. Adam told me he’s lived in Braddock his whole life and evidently is a regular on Braddock Ave. (When he was paying for his iced tea, the cashier presented him with a pack of cigarettes, and he took one for the road.) “How come I’ve never seen Fetterman or met him?” Adam wondered.
And the hits just keep on coming: Alrighty Uncle Fester! John Fetterman dragged for comparing murderers he voted to release to Morgan Freeman.
STOCHASTIC TERRORISM: A game of rhetorical asymmetry.
The ultimate flaw in accusing Sarah Palin of being responsible for the shooting of Gabby Giffords was that concrete details were provided to support it. When concrete details are provided, they are able to be held up to scrutiny.
By focusing on specific actions of Sarah Palin, whether by proxy through her political action committee releasing the target map, or her tweets using gun analogies for political battles, the fact that the shooter was not only disconnected from their influence but disconnected from reality overall interrupts that narrative.
But the term “Stochastic Terrorism” eliminates this problem. Someone can be ‘guilty’ of “Stochastic Terrorism” without any attacks even occurring.
Stochastic Terrorism is a truly clever piece of rhetoric that one can admire for its pure propagandistic potency.
The concept itself is certainly coherent. In almost any population of sufficient size, there will be people — commonly considered “crazy” or at least considered “unhinged” — who get caught up in political emotions in a way that is more extreme than the average citizen, and are set on a course that ultimately results in them committing violent acts.
This possibility is not often predictable in specifics (e.g. ‘Mark Stouffers’ will shoot ‘Debbie Brownstone’ on June 12th) but predictable in the sense that someday, someone, will commit some act. This randomness, the inability to know when, who, or what will be involved but knowing eventually something will, is the ‘stochastic’ part of Stochastic Terrorism.
If one assumes people motivated to carry out an attack are not attacking purely at random (that is, attacking just anybody who happens to be nearby at the time), they will attack with targets in mind. That suggests someone with broad reach can count on somebody listening to them can be activated like a Manchurian Candidate and that Manchurian Candidate will focus on the targets the Stochastic Terrorist wants.
The lack of direct call for violence is then framed as being strategic — it creates plausible deniability. The Stochastic Terrorist gets “the best of both worlds.” They get to “mathematically” rely on their targets being the victims of an attack with no record to be found of them ever actually asking anyone to do so.
By labeling someone as a Stochastic Terrorist you can influence others to associate some of the most immoral and violent acts imaginable with the person being labeled regardless if any violent acts have occurred.

BOMB CANADA — THE CASE FOR WAR: Canada’s Trudeau announces ban on handgun sales, transfers, saying ‘fewer guns means safer communities.’
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced a freeze on handgun sales and transfers.
The handgun freeze, which went into effect Friday, outlaws sales, purchases and other transfers of handguns between individuals. Additionally, no foreign handguns may be brought into the country from abroad.
Canadians have the right to feel safe in their homes, in their schools, and in their places of worship,” Trudeau said in a statement on the freeze. “With handgun violence increasing across Canada, it is our duty to take urgent action to remove these deadly weapons from our communities. Today, we’re keeping more guns out of our communities, and keeping our kids safe.”
The Prime Minister’s Office released a document explaining Trudeau’s thought process and the additional safety they hope to propagate via the handgun freeze.
“Fewer guns mean safer communities. That’s why the Government of Canada is implementing some of the strongest gun control measures in a generation,” the office boasts on its website.
