WON’T SAY HOW, EH? CA state retirement fund lost 71% of $468M put in clean energy, won’t say how.

CETF losses show “the combined dangers of private equity and ESG investment — you have a very opaque investment choice that appears to have been chosen because of its green credentials, and yet it’s now generated a huge loss for taxpayers and retirees,” said Joffe with regards to CETF’s losses and focus on “clean” energy and technology. “CalPERs would be better off focusing on a diverse portfolio of publicly-traded equities to get better long-term returns.”

In response to an inquiry by The Center Square, CalPERS defended its private equity strategy and shifted blame for CETF’s performance on prior management.

“The CalPERS Clean Energy & Technology Fund dates back to 2007, before the pension fund’s board and staff worked together to tightly focus our private equity strategy,” wrote CalPERS spokesperson Abram Arredondo to The Center Square. “Since then, we have diversified our investments to reduce risk, selected the highest performing asset managers and lowered fees by entering into co-investments.

“Since that time [2022], we have reduced fees by 10 percent,” continued Arredondo. “The private equity class has been our best performer for the past 20 years and we believe our members deserve access to its income-producing opportunities.”

To make up for the pension’s funding gap, CalPERS has multiplied its investments in private equity, which, at least on paper, have outperformed its other assets.

However, financial experts warn these reported gains are based on “guesstimates.”

YOLO and OPM go hand-in-hand.

LEFTISTS FALL FOR ISLAMISTS EVERY TIME:

THEY’LL FIND A NEW SCAM: Don Surber: Bill Gates throws in the towel on climate change. “Gates is not a genius. He is stating the obvious. He also called for diverting climate change money to other liberal causes. He does this one step ahead of the law of con men eventually being caught. Climate change alarmism is dying because none of Al Gore’s over-the-top predictions came true. Polar bears are thriving. It still snows. People aren’t starving.”

You know why there isn’t a climate change movement in China? Because China already has a communist government.

VDH: The Left is ‘Bleeding Kansas.’

No wonder the antebellum firebrand and killer John Brown has become a popular blue-state rights icon—precisely because he was willing to kill his opponents. The violent left-wing “John Brown Gun Club” is now mainstream. Howard University professor Stacey Patton recently urged white liberals to “be like John Brown. Ask yourself, what am I willing to burn so somebody else can breathe?”

She apparently was advocating the sort of violence that characterized Brown’s armed raid on Harpers Ferry that helped ignite the Civil War, or his earlier 1856 Pottawatomie Massacre, where he oversaw the execution of five pro-South settlers.

The escalating violence in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland bears an eerie resemblance to the precursors to the “Bleeding Kansas” madness of the late 1850s, in which, eventually, local law enforcement often ignored or joined in the violence of ad hoc thugs, sometimes in opposition to the federal government.

As in the bloodletting of 19th-century Kansas, the current activist left, in the street and on social media, makes no effort to hide their glee over Charlie Kirk’s death, to mask their disappointment that Trump survived two assassination attempts, or to deny that assassin Luigi Mangione is now a popular left-wing icon.

This doesn’t end well — and do read the whole thing.

JOHN LUCAS: Insubordinate Generals and Senior Officers Publicly Attack the Secretary of War: Anonymous but public criticisms topped by massive hypocrisy. “Trump derangement syndrome and its variant, Hegseth derangement syndrome (HDS), continue to infect an undetermined number of victims in the military. Like the original affliction, this new strain of is a debilitating malady that deprives the aggrieved victim of the ability to think and act rationally.”

OPEN THREAD: Tuesday’s Groovy.

IT’S OFFICIAL: The Democratic Party Is Now Straight Up Socialist.

When socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral primary, we said that the concern expressed by some Democrats was phony, because they didn’t want to admit just how far left their party had drifted.

Now, they’ve given up that pretense entirely.

On Friday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed socialist Mamdani, saying the 33-year-old trust fund baby “has relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers.”

He’s the most senior-ranking Democrat to do so, but he joins a list that already includes Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

To be fair, Democrats have been trending in that direction for quite some time:

DON’T GET COCKY: Scandal-ridden candidates expose Democrats’ turmoil.

At the heart of the Democrats’ struggle is a furious debate over whether the midterm elections will be won by tacking to the Left or cleaving to the centre.

Zohran Mamdani’s runaway victory in the New York Democratic primary has prompted giddy speculation among the party’s most Left-leaning members that the country is crying out for more progressive candidates.

But strategists warn this approach is doomed to failure. “For the activist base of the party, the existential question is what’s more important: picking the candidate you love or winning the seat,” said [Democratic strategist Joel] Rubin.

“The white whale we’re hunting is how to win back the white working class voters and the economic and social issues voters who left our coalition at the last election.

“What I’m worried about is not learning the lessons from 2024.”

QED:

Earlier: Imagine That — Actions Have Consequences.

If Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor of New York City, Republicans plan to highlight that fact in their midterm campaigns against Democratic lawmakers nationwide.

That entirely unremarkable observation is the subject of an item in Axios in which the GOP is accused of plotting to “weaponize” New York City Democrats’ voting preferences, which, we should observe, consists entirely of noticing them.

For years, says reporter Kate Santaliz in her scandalized dispatch, the GOP has made former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into a “bogeywoman.” Her capacity to “rile up the base” was unrivaled. But with her diminished role, “GOP strategists are testing new symbols of the party’s left, and hope Mamdani will fill that void.”

Oh, he will: Ya Think? Democrats Are Just Now Realizing It’s Time to Panic Over Mamdani Mayoral Candidacy.

T. BECKET ADAMS: Media Nazi hunters go on vacation.

You can tell a lot about a guy’s biases based on when he chooses to extend grace.

And when it comes to the news media and grace, there’s an overabundance of the latter for Graham Platner, the loony toon Democratic Maine Senate candidate, who, until last Tuesday, sported a sizeable Nazi tattoo on his chest.

“Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner tells AP he got a new tattoo to cover one seen as a Nazi symbol,” reads a news blurb from the Associated Press (emphasis my own).

Reported the Washington Post, “Maine Senate hopeful changed tattoo ex-aide calls antisemitic.

CBS News, meanwhile, reported that “Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner says he covered up tattoo that resembles Nazi symbol.”

Politico and CNN likewise claimed the tattoo “resembles” a Nazi symbol.

The tattoo in question, which has been inked over, was the Totenkopf (“death’s head”). It’s a specific skull-and-crossbones image infamously worn by the Nazi Schutzstaffel, or the “SS,” which originally served as Adolf Hitler’s personal protection unit before growing into the paramilitary organization responsible for the Holocaust.

The Totenkopf is not exactly obscure. If you’ve seen Indiana Jones, or the Dirty Dozen, or Schindler’s List, or the Boy in the Striped Pajamas, or Life is Beautiful, or Band of Brothers, or Inglourious Basterds, or dozens of other films set during World War II, you’ve almost certainly seen the Totenkopf.

There is even an internet-famous comedy sketch from 2006 by the duo Mitchell and Webb, in which the two comedians play Nazi SS officers who realize, based on their uniforms, that they are the “baddies.”

At this point, Platner must be trolling the media:

Further thoughts from Sasha Stone: The Democrats Have a Nazi Problem, And it’s time to call them out.

ANALYSIS: TRUE.

CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN: Under Trump 2.0, colleges celebrate Halloween instead of warning against ‘offensive’ costumes.

Posters declaring “it’s a culture, not a costume” used to pepper quads nationwide, with special workshops hosted on campuses to hammer home the point.

For instance, Princeton University held its “Conversation Circles: Cultural Appropriation and Halloween” event in 2017, in which students learned about “the impact of cultural appropriation, Halloween, and why culture is not a costume.”

The University of South Indiana hosted a “Culture not Costumes” Halloween workshop that argued “clothing, symbols, music, art, religion, language, and social behavior” are all elements of cultural appropriation, warning students not to dress as “Pocahotties” and “sexy Indian Princesses” if they do not come from such cultures.

Furman University in South Carolina was put on the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education’s “Speech Code of the Month” in October 2019 after it threatened students with investigation if they “encourage people to wear costumes or act in ways that reinforce stereotypes or are otherwise demeaning.”

The University of Texas at Austin at one point even issued a 29-point checklist on offensive Halloween costumes and inappropriate party themes, telling students to avoid “exotic” or “unique” themes, warning against “Cowboys and Indians,” as well as “tropical” or “fiesta” concepts.

For 2025, The College Fix found one single university that chided students.

Nobody likes a scold.
