BOEING STARLINER: ‘I think we’re missing something fundamental that’s going on inside the thrusters.’

The flight’s other significant problem developed on Thursday, just hours before Starliner was due to dock at the station. This was the failure of five of the vehicle’s 28 reaction-control system thrusters at certain times. These small thrusters are used for fine pointing and maneuvering, especially close to the space station.

During a troubleshooting process, in which the thrusters were essentially reset and fired again, four of the five thrusters came back online. This gave NASA confidence to allow Starliner to approach and ultimately dock with the space station.

However, this is now the second consecutive mission in which a subset of these small thrusters failed to operate during a Starliner flight. During the vehicle’s previous mission, Orbital Flight Test-2 in May 2022, some of these same thrusters failed to operate when called upon during the approach to the station. Although two small software fixes were applied after that flight, they appear not to have addressed the issue.

“I think we’re missing something fundamental that’s going on inside the thrusters,” said Steve Stich, NASA’s commercial crew program manager on Thursday. However, he and Nappi also said they believed that the failure of the thrusters was likely due to a “data issue” rather than the thruster hardware or software.

Stich declined to speculate about how long it would take to study and resolve the thruster issue as part of the certification process necessary to clear Starliner for operational crewed missions to the International Space Station. Boeing is contracted to fly six of these missions, each carrying four astronauts for six-month increments on the station between now and 2030.

At this point, I’m wondering if Boeing would rather just get out of its six ISS missions and stop bleeding money on Starliner.

Meanwhile: As leaks on the space station worsen, there’s no clear plan to deal with them.

The microscopic structural cracks are located inside the small PrK module on the Russian segment of the space station, which lies between a Progress spacecraft airlock and the Zvezda module. After the leak rate doubled early this year during a two-week period, the Russians experimented with keeping the hatch leading to the PrK module closed intermittently and performed other investigations. But none of these measures taken during the spring worked.
…
However, there appears to be rising concern in the ISS program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The space agency often uses a 5×5 “risk matrix” to classify the likelihood and consequence of risks to spaceflight activities, and the Russian leaks are now classified as a “5” both in terms of high likelihood and high consequence. Their potential for “catastrophic failure” is discussed in meetings.

In responding to questions from Ars by email, NASA public relations officials declined to make program leaders available for an interview. The ISS program is currently managed by Dana Weigel, a former flight director. She recently replaced Joel Montalbano, who became deputy associate administrator for the agency’s Space Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

One source familiar with NASA’s efforts to address the leaks confirmed to Ars that the internal concerns about the issue are serious. “We heard that basically the program office had a runaway fire on their hands and were working to solve it,” this person said. “Joel and Dana are keeping a lid on this.”

FLORIDA MAN FRIDAY [VIP]: They Took a Long [DELETED] Off a Short Pier. “It’s time for your much-needed break from the serious news, and this week we have the couple who took it a pier too far, the rubber snakes and motor oil attack, and the heartwarming video of a car driven by ISIS members hitting an anti-tank mine.”

HMM: China Is ‘Aggressively Recruiting’ Pilots from the US and NATO Countries, Intelligence Agencies Warn. “‘To overcome their shortcomings, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has been aggressively recruiting Western military talent to train their aviators, using private firms around the globe that conceal their PLA ties and offer recruits exorbitant salaries,’ Michael Casey, the director of ODNI’s National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said in a statement. ‘Recent actions by Western governments have impacted these operations, but PLA recruitment efforts continue to evolve in response.'”

THAT’S A LONG WAY DOWN FROM “DISSENT IS PATRIOTIC” Dem Congressional Candidate Wants Nazi-esque ‘Reeducation Camps’ for MAGA Supporters. “Even if we were to have a resounding blue wave come through, as many of us would like, putting it all back together again after we’ve gone through this MAGA nightmare and re-educating basically, which, that sounds like a rather, a re-education camp. I don’t think we really want call it that… I’m sure we can find another way to phrase it.”

NOTHING TO SEE HERE, MOVE ALONG: DOJ Indicts Whistleblowing Surgeon for Exposing Transgender Procedures at Texas Children’s Hospital.

The Department of Justice has indicted Dr. Eithan Haim, a little-known surgeon who exposed Texas Children’s Hospital for secretly conducting transgender surgeries and treatments on minors, on four felony counts related to his alleged violation of a medical-records law.

Last year, Haim anonymously leaked evidence of the child sex-change procedures to conservative journalist Christopher Rufo. The documents revealed that Texas Children’s Hospital had continued running its transgender program, despite announcing that the program had been discontinued in accordance with Governor Greg Abbott’s 2022 directive equating such medical interventions with child abuse.

The Houston-based hospital was ultimately forced to stop its trans-medical practices after a state law took effect in September 2023, prohibiting drug and surgical “gender-affirming” interventions for minors.

U.S. marshals notified Haim of the indictment at his home this week and summoned him to court for violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Haim and his legal team, who don’t yet know the full nature of the charges, are set to appear in court on June 17.

The man who exposed the secret mutilation of children must be punished.

Reminder: The process is the punishment.

Defund WHO.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Rocket Week in America Was Pretty Cool and a Welcome Distraction. “Honestly, I could kill hours watching this hulking rocket take off over and over. I was born and grew up during the Space Race, and my sense of wonder when any rocket leaves the launchpad hasn’t diminished one iota. Heck, I still hit YouTube to re-watch shuttle launches. Seeing the most powerful rocket ever to fly blast off is kid in a candy store stuff for me.”

THAT’S ANOTHER 50,000 STATE JOBS: Argentina’s Milei To Cut 50,000 State Jobs Amid Legislative Challenges.

This latest round of cuts follows a March announcement in which Milei proposed slashing 70,000 jobs from Argentina’s public sector work force, which employs approximately 3.5 million people. According to Infobae, 25,000 positions have been cut since March’s announcement.

As a result, public employees rejected the measure and some of the largest unions in the country have called for protests. “We knew that the program was going to generate social tension. Bringing the number of ministries to half was not free,” the president said during his speech at the Latam Economic Forum in Buenos Aires.

Since taking office six months ago, Milei has pledged to fix Argentina’s severe economic issues, including an inflation rate that has surged to a three-decade high of over 250 percent and a poverty rate impacting 57 percent of the population. To end the crisis, Milei has slashed state subsidies, devalued the currency, and closed several state agencies.

But: “Milei’s reform efforts have faced resistance within both chambers of Argentina’s legislature, where his party only holds a minority of support.”

DISPATCHES FROM THE BLUE ZONES: Repaving crew abandons Oakland neighborhood citing safety concerns.

The situation has left Sobrante Park residents with their street torn up and reduced to gravel with gaping potholes. Resident Shari Angarano said the unfinished road work made bumpy driving conditions on Colorados Drive go from bad to worse.

“The ground is uneven and a lot of the gravel used to fill pot holes is being kicked up,” Angarano said.

The unfortunate situation began in March, when Sobrante Park residents received letters stating Colorados Drive would be repaved.

“They put signs up, did some work,” Angarano told KRON4. The street was prepped by crews for paving. “The signage on the street barriers indicated that the crew would be back on 5/15-5/16 to complete the work,” she said.

But workers abruptly left midway through the project — and never returned.

Gooder and harder, Oakland.

BREAKING: Seriously, Is Boeing Starliner Cursed?

Houston, Starliner has a problem. Another one. Four, actually — four failed maneuvering thrusters. After Wednesday’s oft-delayed but finally successful crewed flight test (CFT) launch, Boeing’s orbital spacecraft suffered multiple thruster issues on its way to dock with the International Space Station.

Spoiler: Starliner and its crew — mission commander Barry Wilmore and pilot Suni Williams — eventually safely docked with ISS.

Best as we know so far, here’s what happened.

THE BATTLEFIELD IS EXPANDING: Virginia now a battleground as Trump surges — and Biden’s failures drag Dems down.

Virginia has gone blue in every presidential election since 2008.

Four years ago Trump lost the state to Joe Biden by 10 points.

Nobody considered Virginia — and its 13 electoral votes — a battleground this year.

Late last month a Roanoke College poll found Trump and Biden tied, 42% to 42%.

Biden was already looking anemic in a January poll by Virginia Commonwealth University, which had him ahead by just 3 points.

What’s happening in Virginia is that the Democrats’ coalition is cracking even as Biden’s gruesome foreign-policy record helps heal divisions within the GOP.

Trump is in a position to win “NeverTrump Republicans” — or NearlyNeverTrumpers — for the first time, while Biden is losing ground with the rural and working-class whites Democrats still need to win in places like Virginia.

That Wall Street Journal story about Biden’s good days/bad days senescence forced every news outlet to finally address the senility issue, even if it was only in the context of griping about the Wall Street Journal story. While there might not have been anything there that people didn’t at least suspect, the insider details were new — and devastating.

Whatever effect the WSJ’s report is having on Biden’s support, it’s too soon for it to show up in the polls. And almost like clockwork, Biden suffered a series of embarrassing brain freezes at the D-Day anniversary ceremony, broadcast live around the world.

Time is running short to change perceptions about Biden but, more importantly, perhaps aside from a jacked-up debate performance later this month, he’s no longer up to doing the job himself.

As always, don’t get cocky.
