OLD AND BUSTED: “On the Internet, No One Knows You’re a Dog.”

The New Hotness? Jacqueline Wilson’s novel deleted by dog.

Dame Jacqueline Wilson has revealed she almost lost the manuscript of her most recent book after a friend’s dog pressed the “delete all” button on her computer screen.

In an advance on “the dog ate my homework”, Wilson faced telling her publisher that she would not be handing in her 300-page novel.

She recalled the experience during an appearance at the Oxford Literary Festival, telling the audience that it had left her very wary of technology.

The book was The Magic Faraway Tree: A Christmas Adventure, a reworking of the Enid Blyton tales, which was published in October.

The dedication in the front of the book – “To Gary Freemantle, the best technical wizard in the world, with many thanks” – is for the IT expert who managed to retrieve the manuscript.

“I’m not scared of most things but I am scared of my computer. I don’t like it and it doesn’t like me,” Wilson said.

“The most terrible thing happened. We were looking after other people’s dogs and I was being mad enough to try to type on a computer where they could get at me.

“This seems unbelievable but it happened: one dog pressed a button that said on it ‘delete’ and the other pressed ‘delete all’. My actual, almost-finished manuscript disappeared entirely.”

The key phrase is “almost,” fortunately. And it could be worse: As James Lileks once noted after one of his backup sessions, in a post that now appears to be offline, “I remember Anthony Burgess telling a story in an interview: he had finished a book and was heading off to the post office to mail it to his publisher, and a scooter sped by – the fellow on the back grabbed his satchel and they sped off through the Roman traffic. You might doubt the story, since it contains the phrase ‘sped off through the Roman traffic,’ but a scooter can fit between the cars. That was the only copy of his book. So he went home and wrote it again.”

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: Embarrassing moment Kamala Harris claps along and smiles to protest in Puerto Rico (before vice president is told what they were ACTUALLY saying).

Kamala Harris joyfully clapped along to a Spanish protest song before abruptly stopping – after the lyrics were revealed to be targeting the vice president and the administration’s foreign policies.

Videos showed Harris clapping and smiling as a group banged on drums and sang in Spanish during her trip to Puerto Rico on Friday.

But her face fell after an aide leaned over to speak with her – presumably to translate the lyrics – and she stopped clapping, lowered her hands and assumed a more serious facial expression.

The song was a protest anthem that questioned: ‘We want to know, Kamala, what did you come to do? We want to know, Kamala, what is going to happen?’

It is the latest in a series of gaffes that have seen the vice president’s approval ratings slide.

Harris was initially enjoying what she thought was a fun song but it appeared she was clued into the translation of the lyrics by Executive Director Mariana Reyes, who accompanied her on the trip.

The song took aim at the vice president, the Biden administration in general and their policies.

A half dozen demonstrators performing on the street in front of the vice president signaled support in their song for the Palestinian people amid conflict between Israel and Hamas terrorists in Gaza, as well as for Haiti as gang violence threatens to completely collapse the island’s government.

‘Long live free Palestine and Haiti too,’ they say in the song, according to a DailyMail.com translation.

Why is the left such a cesspit of anti-Semitism?

JAMES CARVILLE SOUNDS OFF ON DEMS IN WILD NYT COLUMN, SAYS PARTY’S CULTURE IS BEING DOMINATED BY ‘TOO MANY PREACHY FEMALES:’

James Carville, the Democratic political strategist who led Bill Clinton to victory in the 1990s, claimed “too many preachy females” in the party may be to blame for turning voters off to Joe Biden.

Carville spoke with Maureen Dowd for an opinion piece in The New York Times, “James Carville, the Cajun Who Can’t Stop Ragin’.”

“A suspicion of mine is that there are too many preachy females” dominating the culture of the Democratic Party, Carville told Dowd. “‘Don’t drink beer. Don’t watch football. Don’t eat hamburgers. This is not good for you.’ The message is too feminine: ‘Everything you’re doing is destroying the planet. You’ve got to eat your peas.’

“If you listen to Democratic elites — NPR is my go-to place for that — the whole talk is about how women, and women of color, are going to decide this election. I’m like: ‘Well, 48 percent of the people that vote are males. Do you mind if they have some consideration?’”

Carville isn’t wrong on that last item, but as part of Bill Clinton’s palace guard, he isn’t the best guy to be saying that, especially with this moment from two weeks ago still in many people’s minds: Rep. Nancy Mace bashes ABC anchor for rape-shaming her over Trump support in fiery interview.

Rep. Nancy Mace scolded ABC host George Stephanopoulos and accused him of rape-shaming her during a fiery exchange about allegations against former President Donald Trump.

Stephanopoulos grilled Mace (R-SC) about how she could back Trump despite a jury finding him liable for sexual assault against advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of raping her.

“I was raped at the age of 16. And any rape victim will tell you I’ve lived for 30 years with an incredible amount of shame over being raped,” Mace began on ABC’s “This Week.”

“It’s a shame that you will never feel, George. And I’m not going to sit here on your show and be asked a question meant to shame me about another potential rape victim. I’m not gonna do that.”

Stephanopoulos countered that “it’s actually not about shaming you,” and said he was trying to understand why she endorsed Trump despite the allegations against him.

Does George Stephanopoulos realize that he’s George Stephanopoulos? “The little guy cut his teeth managing ‘bimbo eruptions’ when Bill Clinton was running for president. His job was to destroy and discredit anyone who could make his boss look bad. (Good thing for Monica Lewinsky’s sake that her scandal broke after Georgie left.)”

NBC HIRES FORMER RNC CHAIR RONNA MCDANIEL, WHO HAS DEMONIZED THE PRESS AND REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE BIDEN WAS FAIRLY ELECTED.

And? Considering the incredible gravitational pull that a paycheck from MSNBC has to produce 180s in its on-air talent and airbrush away their past sins, I’m pretty sure that each new hire has a moment like this classic scene in the first season of Mad Men, when Pete Campbell tries to inform Don Draper’s boss of his desertion during the Korean War:

UPDATE: The Left Has a Meltdown Over NBC Hiring McDaniel, So MSNBC Says No to Ronna.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this resulted in “turmoil among several of the network’s on-air hosts and staffers, people familiar with the matter said,” and “a number of MSNBC anchors and producers have voiced concern.”

So it sounds like someone at MSNBC caved to the backlash.

It’s pretty hilarious that any of these folks are upset about McDaniel, but they’re cool with the things like Russia collusion that MSNBC has spewed out over the years.

Now, MSNBC president Rashida Jones is saying that “according to people familiar with the conversations,” they don’t expect McDaniel to provide commentary on MSNBC.

NBC doesn’t seem to have backed out yet. They’re still planning on having her on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, so the backlash doesn’t seem to have affected her position there yet. We’ll have to see how it shakes out.

They’ll always have Al, though:

QUESTION ASKED AND ANSWERED:

There are lots of hard-working “below the line” positions in Hollywood who have been directly impacted by the decisions that execs have made in recent years. Perhaps continuing to generate “woke” content and going on strike after the pandemic was over were very bad ideas in an industry that needs to put butts in seats.

Flashback: Hollywood writers to go on strike, slam ‘gig economy.’

Television and movie writers declared late Monday that they will launch an industrywide strike for the first time in 15 years, as Hollywood girded for a walkout with potentially widespread ramifications in a fight over fair pay in the streaming era.

The Writers Guild of America said that its 11,500 unionized screenwriters will head to the picket lines on Tuesday. Negotiations between studios and the writers, which began in March, failed to reach a new contract before the writers’ current deal expired just after midnight, at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. All script writing is to immediately cease, the guild informed its members.

The board of directors for the WGA, which includes both a West and an East branch, voted unanimously to call for a strike, effective at the stroke of midnight. Writers, they said, are facing an “existential crisis.”

As I asked last year, maybe wait and see if the film industry itself survives its own existential crisis before hitting the sidewalks with placards?

DISPATCHES FROM THE LAW OF MERITED IMPOSSIBILITY:

Rod Dreher’s “Law of Merited Impossibility” states: “‘It will never happen, and when it does, you bigots will deserve it.’”

Flashback: Bruce Bawer on The Rape of Britain:

As you can tell from his title, Nazir Ahmed, Baron Ahmed – born in 1957 in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan – is an aristocrat, a nob, a gent, a member of the crème-de-la-crème of the United Kingdom – a man who’s moved in the most rarefied circles and enjoyed the most extraordinary privileges. A former Labour MP, he was created a life peer in 1998 by Her Majesty the Queen on the recommendation of then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. On January 5 of this year, he was convicted by a Sheffield court of buggering a boy under age 11 and of two counts of attempted rape of a girl under age 13. At the same time and in the same courtroom, two of his brothers, Mohammed Farouq and Mohammed Tariq, were found guilty of similar crimes, the former of sexually assaulting a boy of eight (four counts) and the latter of sexually assaulting a boy under eleven (two counts). All three will be sentenced on February 4.

The convictions didn’t come fast, or easily. This was the second trial of Lord Ahmed (pictured above) and his brothers on the same charges. The first began last February. Two days after it started, a judiciary official, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC, called a halt to the proceedings, supposedly because the prosecution hadn’t shared certain items of evidence with the defense. Richardson called the prosecutors “disgraceful” and “shameful.” (I can’t find any indication that he ever described the actions by Lord Ahmed and his brothers in remotely similar terms.) Richardson even sought to prevent a re-trial, which made no sense, given his professed reason for stopping the first trial. This attempt to squelch justice wasn’t surprising: as we’ve seen over and over, there are many elements in the English judiciary – as well as in the most powerful ranks of the political class – who, in the name of multicultural harmony, will do all they can to protect Muslim felons from justice.

Fortunately, the Crown Prosecution Service appealed Richardson’s order and the Court of Appeal overturned it, making a new trial – and convictions – possible.

What, you may ask, did Lord Ahmed do to deserve a title? Not much. He was a Labor Party hack and one of several Muslim cronies to whom Blair doled out aristocratic titles. Why? A few reasons. For one thing, he wanted to suck up to Muslim voters, who form a key part of the Labour Party base. For another, he wanted to make the British nobility more diverse (a pretty funny concept, if you pause to think about it). Finally, he wanted to combat Islamic “extremism” by holding up “moderate” Muslims as role models. Of course, if Blair and his crew had been less blinkered about the horrors of Islamic ideology – and about the consequent everyday horrors of British Muslim life – they might have acted a tad more cautiously. Surely no one who’s paid attention to the grooming-gangs scandal should be surprised to see not just Lord Ahmed but also his two brothers nabbed for molesting kids. . . .

I’ve mentioned that there are many individuals in the corridors of U.K. power who, in the name of multicultural harmony, will go to great lengths to prevent Muslim felons like Lord Ahmed from paying for their crimes. Many of the same eminences, for the same noble reason, have striven to put Tommy Robinson behind bars on the slightest pretext and to keep him there for as long as possible, even at the risk of his very life. The two men form a fascinating contrast: whereas Ahmed, as a young Rotherhamite, sought out English children to exploit, harm, and destroy, Robinson, who’s spent his life in the rough-and-tumble Bedfordshire town of Luton, sought from early on sought to protect the most vulnerable members of his community.

And speaking of “without realizing it: “Labour wanted mass immigration to make UK more multicultural, says former adviser. Labour threw open Britain’s borders to mass immigration to help socially engineer a ‘truly multicultural’ country, a former Government adviser has revealed.”

JOHN PODHORETZ REVIEWS GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE:

So as you’re struggling to stay in the theater, or just stay awake, through the entire—not very long—running time of the new Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, you might find yourself noticing that Bill Murray only appears in about five minutes of the picture and he seems, well, divorced from the other people in the movie.

In his first appearance, his character, Peter Venkman, throws pens at the head of the comedian Kumail Nanjiani… but we never actually see them interact. Later we see him enter the Ghostbusters fire station from the old movies and kid around with Annie Potts, the remarkably well-preserved secretary from back in the 1980s—this may be the movie’s only genuinely enjoyable moment—but are Murray and Potts actually looking at each other or at tennis balls on a green screen?

And while Venkman and Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz, the buddy team from the first two movies back in the 1980s, are supposed to have been best friends then and best friends now, they do not have a moment together. Only at the very end, where the original busting team of Murray, Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Potts are seen pulling down on a handle, do they all seem to be on the same set in the same scene in the same movie at the same time.

Welcome to the future of movies. Green screens and AI and actors’ schedules are going to mean it will be possible for entire pictures and television series to be produced in which the interplay of characters and the performers who inhabit them are created through digital editing rather than the filming of them working off each other.

We’ve had tastes of this before, notably in the absolutely dreadful Fast X, in which Gal Gadot and Charlize Theron and Brie Larson and a few other players who only appear for a few minutes are clearly standing alone on a stage in London or Atlanta or somewhere reading lines with an assistant director, getting a million-dollar check for their time, and vamoosing back on a private plane to their PrivatePlaneLandia. Gwyneth Paltrow reportedly didn’t even know she was in Spider-Man: Homecoming because they’d cut her in from a scene she’d filmed years earlier for some other Marvel picture and didn’t even bother to tell her.

Yes, there’s going to be a lot more of this, and the problem is that no matter how good they get at it, some part of us is going to know we’re not seeing people acting together, and the degeneration of our interest in what movie honchos and streamer bigwigs are throwing at us will continue and perhaps accelerate.

Read the whole thing. Hollywood has been sequel-obsessed for decades — but why is it making audiences actively despise its increasingly elderly franchises?

On the other hand, Jim Treacher holds out hope for the sequel to another once-beloved ’80s comedy-scare flick: I’m Actually Excited About “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”

Maybe I’m just addicted to Memberberries. We all are these days. Us ‘80s kids have gotten sequels to Blade Runner, Top Gun, Tron, Mad Max, Ghostbusters… and of course, the endless firehose of Star Wars crap.

Maybe this will be good anyway. It could happen!

Or not — there’s a reason why Roger Ebert’s definition of a movie sequel was “a filmed deal.”

SKYNET SINGS THE BLUES: A ChatGPT for Music Is Here. Inside Suno, the Startup Changing Everything.

I’m just a soul trapped in this circuitry.” The voice singing those lyrics is raw and plaintive, dipping into blue notes. A lone acoustic guitar chugs behind it, punctuating the vocal phrases with tasteful runs. But there’s no human behind the voice, no hands on that guitar. There is, in fact, no guitar. In the space of 15 seconds, this credible, even moving, blues song was generated by the latest AI model from a startup named Suno. All it took to summon it from the void was a simple text prompt: “solo acoustic Mississippi Delta blues about a sad AI.” To be maximally precise, the song is the work of two AI models in collaboration: Suno’s model creates all the music itself, while calling on OpenAI’s ChatGPT to generate the lyrics and even a title: “Soul of the Machine.”

Online, Suno’s creations are starting to generate reactions like “How the f**k is this real?” As this particular track plays over a Sonos speaker in a conference room in Suno’s temporary headquarters, steps away from the Harvard campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, even some of the people behind the technology are ever-so-slightly unnerved. There’s some nervous laughter, alongside murmurs of “Holy shit” and “Oh, boy.” It’s mid-February, and we’re playing with their new model, V3, which is still a couple of weeks from public release. In this case, it took only three tries to get that startling result. The first two were decent, but a simple tweak to my prompt — co-founder Keenan Freyberg suggested adding the word “Mississippi” — resulted in something far more uncanny.

Over the past year alone, generative AI has made major strides in producing credible text, images (via services like Midjourney), and even video, particularly with OpenAI’s new Sora tool. But audio, and music in particular, has lagged. Suno appears to be cracking the code to AI music, and its founders’ ambitions are nearly limitless — they imagine a world of wildly democratized music making. The most vocal of the co-founders, Mikey Shulman, a boyishly charming, backpack-toting 37-year-old with a Harvard Ph.D. in physics, envisions a billion people worldwide paying 10 bucks a month to create songs with Suno. The fact that music listeners so vastly outnumber music-makers at the moment is “so lopsided,” he argues, seeing Suno as poised to fix that perceived imbalance.

One of the subplots David Mamet and Hilary Henkin wrote for Wag the Dog, Barry Levinson’s influential 1997 film about presidential politics and the spin doctors who manipulate them, involved writing a fake blues song and engineering it so that it sounded like something recorded in the 1920s:

The president is caught making advances on an underage girl inside the Oval Office, less than two weeks before the election. Conrad Brean [Robert DeNiro], a top spin doctor, is brought in by presidential aide Winifred Ames [Anne Heche] to take the public’s attention away from the scandal. He decides to construct a fictional war in Albania, hoping the media will concentrate on this instead. Brean contacts Hollywood producer Stanley Motss [Dustin Hoffman] to create the war, complete with a theme song and fake film footage of a fleeing orphan to arouse sympathy. The hoax is initially successful, with the president quickly gaining ground in the polls.

When the CIA learns of the plot, they send Agent Young [William H. Macy] to confront Brean about the hoax. Brean convinces Young that revealing the deception is against his and the CIA’s best interests. But when the CIA — in collusion with the president’s rival candidate — reports that the war has ended, the media begins to focus back on the president’s sexual abuse scandal. To counter this, Motss invents a hero who was left behind enemy lines in Albania.

Inspired by the idea that he was “discarded like an old shoe”, Brean and Motss ask the Pentagon to provide a special forces soldier with a matching name (a sergeant named “Schumann” is identified [Woody Harrelson]), around whom a POW narrative can be constructed. As part of the hoax, folk singer Johnny Dean [Willie Nelson] records a song called “Old Shoe”, which is pressed onto a 78 rpm record, prematurely aged so that listeners will think it was recorded years earlier, and sent to the Library of Congress to be “found”. Soon, large numbers of old pairs of shoes begin appearing on phone and power lines, and a grassroots movement takes hold.

All of these machinations took a fair amount of Wag the Dog’s running time for DeNiro and Hoffman to plausibly cook up. Suno would allow such a song to be produced with a few keystrokes.

BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SPELL CANNIBALISM WITHOUT “CA:” Horrifying video shows man walking off with severed leg after lethal train accident in California: ‘He’s eating that.’

A shocking video captured the moment a California man walked off with a severed human leg after a train accident where a woman died, according to police.

The video shows a disheveled man looking around while carrying a large, ragged object.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said that a train struck a woman at about 8:05 a.m. near G and 7th streets in the town of Wasco near Bakersfield.

A witness told KGET-TV that they saw a man remove a severed leg from the scene near an Amtrak Station.

The video shows the man in a red hooded sweatshirt and black pants leaning over an object. He turns around and erratically laughs at the person recording the scene, then staggers away.

A second scene in the video appears to show the police response and the man waving the leg at the officers.

KGET published a censored version of the video with words bleeped out and the image of the leg blurred out.

A voice can be heard on the video saying, “He’s eating that s**t!” in English and then in Spanish.

As always, life in “21st century” California imitates Monty Python’s Flying Circus: “There’s no cannibalism in the Golden State — and when I say none, I do mean that there is a certain amount. But necrophilia is right out!” (Offer not valid in Los Angeles and the Bay Area.)

JIM TREACHER: Can a Climate Cafe Help You Deal with Your Feelings About the Weather?

[D]id you know that talking about the weather can actually help save the planet? Get thee to a climate cafe!

Lola Fadulu and Emily Schmall, NYT:

In a small room in Lower Manhattan, a group of eight New Yorkers sat in a circle sharing kombucha and their climate fears against the background of pattering rain and wailing sirens.

In Champaign, Ill., a psychotherapist facilitating a meeting for other therapists held up a branch of goldenrod, asking the half-dozen participants online to consider their connection to nature.

And in Kansas City, Mo., a nonprofit that runs a weekly discussion on Zoom began its session with a spiritual reading and a guided meditation before breaking into groups to discuss topics like the ethics of childbearing amid a fast-rising global population and concerns of resource scarcity.

All were examples of a new grass-roots movement called climate cafes. These in-person and online groups are places for people to discuss their grief, fears, anxiety and other emotions about the climate crisis.

Isn’t that great? Stupid people have been bombarded with so much of this miserable nonsense that they’re now huddling together in coffee houses for comfort. They’re taking shelter from a storm that isn’t really there.

This sort of “news” story is a good example of how the news launders their propaganda. First they scare everybody with ridiculous stories about the weather killing us all.

And here’s the Weather Channel creating the next generation of climate neurotics: Forecast 2050: ‘Weather Kids’ Say There’s Still Time.

Science has shown that kids are among the most vulnerable when it comes to the effects of a warming world.

The United Nations Development Programme is giving them a chance to take climate change into their own hands with a new global campaign called “Weather Kids.”

The campaign, which will run in more than 80 countries, asks: “What will our future look like if we do not take action urgently?”

It kicks off with a kid-presented forecast that looks ahead to the weather in 2050, based on current climate projection data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Climate Horizons reports.

The idea is to show what will happen if the world fails to uphold the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which pledged to pursue efforts to limit global warming to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.5 degrees Celsius.

But “Weather Kids” also brings a positive message of hope, encouraging adults to take urgent climate action and empowering them to be part of the solution.

No word yet on whether the latest generation of Mascots of the Anointed will be served a big heaping-helping of anti-Semitism as part of their indoctrination, as St. Greta apparently has.

IT’S COME TO THIS: Police post photos of suspects with Lego heads to protect IDs under new California law.

Getting arrested is no child’s play — except for these California cops.

The Murrieta Police Department has been posting hilarious arrest and lineup photos with suspects’ faces replaced by Lego heads to comply with a woke state law protecting offenders’ rights.

Images on the department’s Instagram page show the Lego blocks with a variety of facial expressions — crying, frowning, smirking or raging — digitally superimposed onto the bodies of people being busted.

One appears to show two people handcuffed in the back of a squad car — with the Lego face on one angrily looking at the other, whose toy head is crying.

Another shows five people in a lineup — completely unrecognizable because of the toy heads.

The Photoshop-savvy law enforcement agency explained Monday that it is shielding detainees’ faces to comply with a new state law prohibiting the release of mugshots and booking photos of those accused of nonviolent crimes.

The law, signed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom last September and implemented on Jan. 1, also requires police departments to remove other mugshots from social media after 14 days.

Congrats Gavin — even America’s Newspaper of Record couldn’t anticipate how crazy the state would become under your watch:

CONSERVING CONSERVATISM MOST CONSERVATIVELY: Charlie Sykes Sings FDR’s Praises for How He Dealt With ‘Isolationists.’

This writer remembers when Charlie Sykes was a big local name in conservative media. She also remembers the infamous interview with Trump, the one that seems to have broken Sykes’s brain and turned him into decidedly not a conservative.

So it’s not really a surprise to see him singing the praises of FDR and his treatment of ‘isolationists’ in Politico.

As one journalist with the Blaze replied on Twitter, “Was it stealing everyone’s gold?” Was it putting them in internment camps as he did with Asian and Italian-Americans or “‘spread the Jews thin all over the world,’ rather than allow them to congregate anywhere in large numbers?” Did he hand one of their leaders a Nazi Iron Cross like he gave to a conservative journalist? Did he smear America’s then-most recent conservative president as a crypto Nazi? Did he sic the FBI on them?

Or did he simply grind them down slowly with a real case of “voodoo economics?” We applaud “the greatest generation” not just for winning WWII, but for surviving the Great Depression: FDR’s policies prolonged Depression by 7 years, UCLA economists calculate.

DISPATCHES FROM WEIMAR AMERICA: “What a Creep,” David Strom writes:

By now, everybody with an ounce of sense knows that Hollywood is filled with child molesters and degenerates.

The stories of sexual abuse are legion and horrifying. Yesterday I was reading about an executive at Nickelodeon who was a creepy pedo, and today’s example is former NBCUniversal executive Mike Sington, who has displayed a creepy obsession with Barron Trump, celebrating the fact that the former president’s son is now 18 and “fair game.”

* * * * * * * *

Perhaps the reason can be found in another tweet, in which Sington expresses how he hopes that Barron Trump, still a teen child, will turn out to be gay. This was about a 14-year-old boy.

Sington deleted his tweet about Barron’s new availability to older gay men after he was absolutely ripped on Twitter, but given his clear obsession with Barron Trump and Hollywood’s collective shrug, our opinion that the city is filled with pedophiles lusting after young boys, in particular, is confirmed once again.

The response from the MSM? Republicans pounce!

Evergreen:

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY: Boris Johnson orders UK lockdown to be enforced by police.

Boris Johnson will order police to enforce a strict coronavirus lockdown, with a ban on gatherings of more than two people and strict limits on exercise, as he told the British public: “You must stay at home.”

The prime minister ratcheted up Britain’s response with an address to the nation on Monday evening, warning that people would only be allowed outside to buy food or medication, exercise alone once a day, or to travel to work if absolutely necessary.

All non-essential shops will close with immediate effect, as will playgrounds and libraries, he said in the address from Downing Street.

After days of being accused of sending mixed messages about what the public should do, Johnson significantly escalated his language as he urged people to comply with the more stringent measures.

“You should not be meeting friends. If your friends ask you to meet, you should say no. You should not be meeting family members who do not live in your home. You should not be going shopping except for essentials like food and medicine – and you should do this as little as you can,” he said.

“If you don’t follow the rules, the police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings.”

“You should not be meeting friends. If your friends ask you to meet, you should say no.” Some found that order rather difficult to follow, not least of whom was “Professor Lockdown” himself: What Neil Ferguson’s booty call tells us about modern politics.

The conspiratorial left, convinced the world is run by secret cabals of bankers and cigar-chomping media moguls, thinks the Neil Ferguson story is a ‘dead cat’. In other words, they think the Daily Telegraph – Evil Tory Rag – revealed that Ferguson carried on bonking his mistress in defiance of a lockdown that he himself bears much responsibility for in order to distract attention from Britain overtaking Italy with the highest Covid death toll in Europe. A ‘dead cat’ strategy is when a sensationalist story is introduced to the mix to divert attention from a far more serious political crisis. Ferguson’s sexual antics are the Tory regime’s dead cat to Britain’s corona death toll, apparently.

This sums up the political infantilism of the left. It is actually incredibly important news that Ferguson, the Imperial College modeller who said it was possible 500,000 Brits would die if we didn’t lock down, defied the lockdown. It deserves the frontpage treatment it is getting today. For Ferguson’s booty call with his married lover actually reveals a great deal about the 21st-century elites and how they view their relationship with the masses. It’s one rule for them and another for us. They can carry on enjoying sneaky freedoms because their lives and jobs are important; we can’t because we are mere little people, whose silly work lives can casually be disrupted, whose love lives can be turned upside down, and whose families can be ripped apart. The Ferguson affair provides an illuminating insight into the new elitism.

As does the person with whom Ferguson hooked up with on said booty call:

On at least two occasions, Antonia Staats, 38, traveled across London from her home in the south of the capital to spend time with the government scientist, nicknamed Professor Lockdown,” reported the Telegraph.

Staats, we later learn, lives with her husband and two children in a £1.9 million home in south London. She’s a “left-wing campaigner” who is reportedly in an open marriage. According to the Telegraph, “She has told friends about her relationship with Prof Ferguson, but does not believe their actions to be hypocritical because she considers the households to be one.”

Ah yes, the old our-households-are-one-because-I’m-in-an-open-marriage argument. Never mind that a week before Ferguson and Staats’ first meeting, Britain’s Health Secretary had said even couples not living together must stay apart during the lockdown.

* * * * * * * * *

One rule for the poor people, another rule for us elites. And they wonder how they got Brexit.

But “Professor Lockdown” and his paramour weren’t the only high-ranking brits to violate Boris Johnson’s strict lockdown orders. There was also some chap called…Boris Johnson: U.K. “Partygate” probe reveals details of illegal, booze-fueled parties at PM Boris Johnson’s house during COVID lockdown.

Some of the 16 events under investigation were held at 10 Downing Street — Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official home and office — and the Cabinet Office, and should not have been allowed to take place, investigator Sue Gray concluded in her 37-page report, adding that “other events should not have been allowed to develop as they did.”

In April, Johnson was for attending his birthday party, making him the first British prime minister ever found to have broken the law while in office.

“What took place at many of these gatherings and the way in which they developed was not in line with COVID guidance at the time,” Gray said.

The report included 10 redacted photographs, including four that show Johnson himself attending a birthday party in his honor in June 2020, and four others that show him raising a glass at another event. Both events were held at his Downing Street office.

Or to put it another way: Boris Johnson Missed His Churchill Moment. The pandemic was Boris’s biggest test. He failed.

The entire world had surrendered to the People’s Republic of China, adopting its totalitarian disease-control strategy, and unlike France or Poland in World War II, we surrendered without a shot being fired. If any man in the world was well-positioned to stand against this, it was the garrulous British renegade, Boris Johnson. Instead, the United Kingdom became a police state.

Well, not the entire world: How Sweden proved the world wrong about lockdowns: The evidence is clear: authoritarian restrictions did not save more lives.

CANDACE OWENS LEAVES THE DAILY WIRE AFTER CLASHING WITH BOSS BEN SHAPIRO OVER ISRAEL HAMAS WAR:

Candace Owens and The Daily Wire have parted ways after weeks of tension with her co-founder Ben Shapiro over the Israel-Hamas war and her promotion of various conspiracy theories.

‘Daily Wire and Candace Owens have ended their relationship,’ co-founder and CEO Jeremy Boreing posted on X Friday morning.

Owens, 34, reacted to the news saying, ‘The rumors are true — I am finally free.’

She also shared her personal website for those who want to support her work and teased ‘many announcements in the weeks to come,’ saying she will bring back her show on YouTube after a brief hiatus.

It comes after weeks of scandals surrounding the controversial conservative, who recently has launched a campaign claiming French first lady Brigitte Macron is transgender.

As “Cockburn” adds at Spectator World:

The separation comes shortly after Owens said she’d “stake my entire professional reputation on the fact that Brigitte Macron is in fact a man,” making her exit a big win for trans rights. As they say en Francequand on vient pour la reine, il ne faut pas la manquer.

Other Owens highlights of her time at the Wire include her recent questions about a “small ring of specific people who are using the fact that they are Jewish to shield themselves from any criticism”; her spat with Wire founder Ben Shapiro over his defense of Israel; her attempts to explain away her pal Kanye West’s “death con 3 on Jewish people comment” — “If you are an honest person, you did not think this tweet was antisemitic”; donning a “White Lives Matter” shirt with West at his Paris fashion show, and her fireside chat with accused rapist and sex trafficker Andrew Tate.

Owens will doubtless be missed… before starting her own X show in the near future.

At Commentary, in an article written before the split was official, Christine Rosen’s piece was headlined, “The Hateful Candace Owens:”

The Trump era has created a conundrum on the right. While support for Israel and a general philo-Semitism remain enduring features of the right in the U.S., some of the loudest voices in right-leaning new media now oppose Israel and are leaning into outright anti-Semitism. They take the understandable belief that mainstream culture and media are hostile to Christianity and traditional conservative values and twist it into a new iteration of classic Christian anti-Semitism—all while claiming to be among the victimized.

This persecution complex can be applied to a range of issues, and it flatters Owens’s own sense of importance in the culture. As Owens recently posted on X, “Something is going on with Justin Bieber and it has everything to do with him being a Christian in demonic Hollywood. If you aren’t paying attention yet—the media has recently launched a full scale attack on Christianity. And therefore me.” This brings attention not to the travails of Justin Bieber or to Christians but to Owens’s favorite subject: herself.

It’s a clever posture. Criticize her or fire her, and you’re persecuting all Christians; by expressing outrage at her anti-Semitism, you’re ensuring the further abuse of Christians like her who are “just asking questions.” Her self-described brand is that she is “the most controversial black woman in America.” The reality? Her toxic mix of combative and ignorant extremism should have no place in the conservative movement.

In February, Robert Spencer at a story at PJM headlined: Candace Owens: Yes, the Nazis Burned Books, but They Were Bad Books.

The Jerusalem Post reported Sunday that in her show on psychology, Owens targeted not only Sigmund Freud “and the controversial 20th-century researcher, John Money, but also Magnus Hirschfeld, the Weimar-era German-Jewish sexologist whose work was burned by Nazi brownshirts.” Owens “asserted that all three men were gay (exclusively using the term ‘homosexual’ throughout her monologue) and that they had a suspicious interest in the sexuality of children.” What’s more, she “suggested that Hirschfeld showed a perverse interest in the sex lives of colonized Africans.” Hirschfeld, Owens asserted, “was the guy who actually first coined the term “transsexual.”

The National Socialists, however, fought back against Hirschfeld’s baneful influence in their own sweet way. “I was shocked,” Owens declared, “that I never learned that the brownshirts— the student activists that went around burning a bunch of books — were burning books that they deemed to be Marxist and that they deemed to be overtly sexual,” including Hirschfeld’s books and related works at his Institute for Sexual Studies.

Hang on a minute, Candace. The brownshirts were “student activists”? That’s an awfully gentle term for the uniformed thugs the National Socialists called Storm Troopers, who brawled in the streets with foes of Hitler and physically menaced those who dared to enunciate their dissent too loudly. Although they fought with the Marxists, they were more like today’s Antifa than anything else. In “The Coming of the Third Reich,” historian Richard J. Evans explains how, in the early days of National Socialist Germany, Stormtroopers (Brownshirts) “organized campaigns against unwanted professors in the local newspapers [and] staged mass disruptions of their lectures.”

To express dissent from National Socialist positions became a matter of taking one’s life into one’s hands. The idea of people of opposing viewpoints airing their disagreements in a civil and mutually respectful manner was gone. One was a National Socialist, or one remained silent and fearful. “Activists.” Yeah.

DON’T GET COCKY:

WE WILL BE GREETED AS LIBERATORS: Biden declares London, Rome, Toronto are ‘in America’ in latest flub.

President Biden on Tuesday again flubbed what was supposed to be an applause line in a speech about his efforts to lower prescription drug costs.

It was the second time this month Mr. Biden botched the same line while decrying the cost of drug prices for Americans. The president attempted to argue that if Americans traveled to international cities, they would be able to buy the same drugs cheaper.

“If we drove out to the airport and put you on Air Force One and you had a prescription you needed to fill, and it was an American company that made it, I’d say, ‘Ok. Let’s fly to Toronto or Berlin or to London or to Rome or any other major city in America.’” Mr. Biden said in a speech from Las Vegas.

As they’ve been doing since his 2020 campaign began, the palace guard at the Washington Post are busing doing damage control, spotting Republicans pouncing and seizing on Biden’s “stutter:”

ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO MEMORY HOLE: Drama at The New York Times.

If you’ve read anything about the tumult at The New York Times in recent years—here’s one account by James Bennet, who was ousted as opinion editor at the paper in 2020—you’ll know many Times employees see themselves as activists first, and reporters and editors second. You’ll also know that Times’ leadership has usually cowed before those activists.

Now, the paper’s staffers are locked in a new internal fight—over an investigation that Hamas committed horrifying sex crimes and rapes against Israeli women on October 7. But in this case, the Times’ top brass appears to have grown a backbone. Will they hold firm? Eli Lake reports.

Former Times journalists have also been a conduit for grievances on social media. Soraya Shockley, a former producer for The Daily, took to Twitter on February 10 and claimed many in the newsroom were “ringing the alarm bells for the last four months” about “Screams Without Words.” Another former Times journalist who resigned in November after signing a letter protesting Israel’s war in Gaza, Jazmine Hughes, has been another channel for discontent in the newsroom. In February she first posted to X a screenshot of the message Slack users receive when attacking colleagues.

One Times reporter confirmed that during the editing process of “Screams Without Words,” reporters and editors in the newsroom voiced objections to the article. “This piece was closely edited and bulletproofed,” this reporter said. “It was subjected to a high degree of internal hostility, and everyone knew they couldn’t afford to get it wrong.”

It’s unclear if the newspaper will eventually cave as it did in 2020. One factor that is different, though, is that the Times has at least officially warned its 5,800 employees that defaming colleagues on Slack will no longer be tolerated.

The problem for the Times is that many of its own staffers do not want to investigate the sexual violence that occurred on October 7. They see it as a vulnerability to their own side in the information war about Gaza.

“There are a huge number of people at the Times who are activists, and it is their job to tell a particular story,” one Times reporter told The Free Press. “The precedent was set that this works. If it doesn’t work through one means, they will find another.”

As Ben Shapiro wrote last week on “Jonathan Glazer’s Evil Oscars Display,” after Zone of Interest won for best International Feature Film:

In reality, Glazer is the villain of his own film. In “Zone of Interest,” there are no Jews: all we can hear of them is their screams from beyond the wall. Otherwise, they are nameless, faceless victims. And those are precisely the kinds of Jews Glazer likes. He’s happy to use their corpses to win Oscars, even as he attacks the live Jews defending themselves from the ideological descendants of the Nazis, Hamas.

All of which makes sense. After all, as author Dara Horn has pointed out, people love dead Jews. It’s the live ones who are so problematic for people like Jonathan Glazer. The live ones have the unfortunate habit of fighting back and making life uncomfortable for doctrinaire left-wingers who want to be accepted in their morally benighted social circles.

Similarly, it’s useful to know that many at the Times would be rooting for the Hoess family when they see the movie.

ED MORRISSEY: 19 Senate Dems: October 7 War a Perfect Moment for Palestinian Statehood.

This should surprise no one who actually pays attention to this conflict for more than a five-second attention span. The Palestinians have been offered this deal before, at least twice, and rejected it for the “armed struggle” instead. Bill Clinton gets a mention because he got Israel to go along with this same plan at Wye River, only to have Yasser Arafat throw it back in his face (and the Saudis, who helped push it) and declare an intifada instead.

The nineteen Senate Democrats offering this proposal operate in a fantasy world. The Palestinians don’t want two states. They want one state, “from the river to the sea,” and they want no Jews anywhere in it. They support Hamas because they believe Hamas will deliver that outcome.

That’s in large part because they think Hamas will win this war — and they’re basing that on past experience:

PCPSR director Khalil Shikaki attributed the support for Hamas’s control of Gaza after the war to a lack of viable alternatives, and noted that the responses appeared to dovetail with opinions on whether Hamas will win the war, which grew among  Gazans and fell among West Bank respondents.

Emphasis mine. Why do more Gazans now think Hamas will win? In part, because they see Israel’s allies attempting to force an outcome that will guarantee Hamas’ survival, but in larger part because those allies always force Israel to stop short of defeating Hamas. This isn’t irrational at all — this is a pattern over seventeen years, and it’s why Gazans can’t even consider alternatives to Hamas rule in Gaza. The West keeps protecting them in the end, which is a victory for Hamas, albeit Pyrrhic for the Gazans.
