CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN:

I think Fetterman is analogous to Caligula’s horse. Suetonius relates that Caligula planned to appoint his horse Incitatus to the position of consul, but was assassinated before the appointment could be made. Why would Caligula name his horse consul? In order to insult and humiliate senators and other elites.

Similarly, the Democrats’ electing Fetterman to the Senate, allowing him to conduct himself in an inappropriate and unprofessional manner, and encouraging him in behavior that brings disgrace on himself and the institution he serves, are all intended to damage the public’s respect for the Senate. The Left is attacking all of our institutions in a multitude of ways. Not just tolerating but encouraging clownish behavior by a brain-damaged John Fetterman is just one of their tactics to undermine the Senate.

That’s a bit of an insult to Caligula’s horse though. I suspect Incitatus’ cerebellum had much more horsepower (sorry) than Fetterman’s brain at this point.

UPDATE (FROM GLENN): Fetterman Nation.

GOODER AND HARDER: Gavin Newsom Is Going To Destroy California.

The latest legislation is the most sweeping emissions disclosure set of rules for big business to date in the country.

The policy would require more than 5,300 companies to report their emissions, according to Ceres, a nonprofit policy group supporting the bill.

SB 253 requires companies with greater than $1 billion in annual revenues to file annual reports publicly disclosing their direct, indirect, and supply chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, verified by an independent and experienced third-party provider.

SB 261 requires companies with $500 million in annual revenues to prepare biennial reports disclosing climate-related financial risk and measures they have adopted to reduce and adapt to that risk, with the first report due by January 1, 2026.

Democratic Assemblymember Chris Ward drummed up the usual unsubstantiated fervor and urgency in regard to climate change. “We are out of time on addressing the climate crisis,” Ward urged. “This will absolutely help us take a leap forward to be able to hold ourselves accountable.”

A great leap forward — into the abyss.

BIG LOSS FOR UCLA LAW: Eugene Volokh, Who Graduated From UCLA At Age 15, Is Retiring From UCLA At Age 56 To Join The Hoover Institution. “Technically, I’ll be ‘retiring’ from UCLA. But at the ripe old age of 56, I will not be at all retiring from scholarship—I’ll just be doing the same sort of research, public commentary (of course, including blogging), and occasional litigation as I have been doing at UCLA, but with more institutional support.”

I can’t imagine doing that, but my institution is more supportive of me than UCLA has been of Eugene lately. This can only be viewed as a defeat for new dean Michael Waterstone, though it reflects more poorly on his predecessors.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: The Democrat J6 Insurrection Hoax Keeps Getting Worse. “Oh, they can pretend to be horrified about what they say went on that day, be we know that they privately chuckle at how they’ve been able to turn their false J6 narrative into a weapon to destroy their political opponents.”

THIS IS CNN: CNN’s Ratings Hit Rock Bottom.

The channel’s rating hit a record low over the weekend in the 25- to 54-year-old demographic, earning just 55,000 viewers for its programming. The ratings are the worst since at least 1991, according to Nielsen ratings data reported by the New York Post.

Fox News performed best in the demographic, at 75,000 viewers, while MSNBC pulled the worst total at 47,000. Overall viewership for CNN was 345,000 viewers, far behind Fox News’s 683,000 viewers.

The poor ratings come months after the network’s former CEO Chris Licht stepped down after receiving internal backlash for his efforts to make the channel less partisan.

How’s that workin’ out for ya, CNN?

THIS OUGHT TO IMPROVE HOW PASSENGERS VIEW THEIR UBER DRIVER IMMENSELY! Robert De Niro to reportedly revive Taxi Driver role in Uber campaign.

The 80-year-old actor will apparently replicate Bickle’s unforgettable line: “You talkin’ to me,” in the series of ads being filmed in London this week, The Sun reported.

“He’s going to be Travis Bickle, saying some phrases and playing up to it,” an unnamed source told the outlet.

“His previous adverts have shown he has no problem poking fun at himself.”

The Oscar-winner has recently taken on several other ad campaigns — a possible consequence of the star’s costly divorces and separations from the mothers of his seven children.

Since they’re still around, were Woody Allen or Dick Cavett asked as well?

ORWELL WOULD LOATHE TODAY’S LEFT:

I recently re-read George Orwell’s 1941 essay, The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and the English Genius, and I was taken by his description of the bourgeois, left-leaning intelligentsia of his time. They live in the shallowness of ideas, he writes, severed from the common culture and life experiences of the working class. They spend most of their time bickering with their chief enemy, the equally bourgeois ‘Blimps’ – archetypal red-faced imperialists. Though they despise each other, both the bourgeois intelligentsia and the Blimps are united in their mutual disdain for the working class.

Orwell, perhaps England’s greatest-ever political writer, notes how the bourgeois-left intelligentsia use a lot of words to intellectualise issues without understanding them. He saw that they frequently Blimp-baited without engaging with the real challenges people face. And he saw that they were only prepared to discuss issues raised in a few select publications – mainly the New Statesman and News Chronicle back then – which they also happened to edit, read and write for.*

I was struck by how well this description of the bourgeois-left intelligentsia fits today’s middle-class lefties. This was brought home recently by the Twitter left’s response to the cancellation of Róisín Murphy, a wonderful, soulful singer who has been monstered in recent weeks for expressing her reservations about children being given puberty blockers. Venues promptly cancelled her gigs and her record company halted promotion for her new album, Hit Parade.

HMM: China is on a mission to spread deflation worldwide.

China is currently experiencing an unusual trend, with negative inflation rates splashed across various price metrics. When consumer prices tumbled in July, the global community raised eyebrows. They did rebound a bit in August, but not enough to alleviate concerns. Food products like pork showcased some of the most drastic fluctuations. However, this decline isn’t isolated to food; sectors such as home appliances and transport are also seeing dwindling prices.

While some areas like tourism are witnessing a price surge, the manufacturing sector paints a grim picture. Prices are dropping across a staggering two-thirds of the primary categories. Even more disconcerting? China’s export prices, which are sagging across an array of products, signaling potential trouble for countries importing Chinese goods.

China’s dipping export prices might not spell as dire a consequence for global inflation as one might fear. The multiple layers of costs, coupled with profit margins later in the supply chain, restrict the might of China’s deflationary impact. However, dismissing China’s potential to influence global financial health would be nothing short of naive.

Indeed. At the very least since COVID, Xi’s thinking seems to be it doesn’t matter if China isn’t doing very well so long as China’s rivals are doing even worse. Exporting deflation at a time when the U.S. has been busy trying to inflate away crushing federal and personal debt would be a pretty neat trick, so far as Xi is concerned.

SUNLIGHT IS THE BEST DISINFECTANT:

Details here: Texas teacher fired for reading graphic adaptation of Diary of Anne Frank — headlines are deceiving.

This controversy isn’t even a new one. Other school boards have complained about this version. Why? Well, because the word vagina is used, Anne mentions she asked a friend to look at each other’s breasts, and she talks about menstruation. She also doesn’t approve of her father’s marriage, apparently. None of this is shocking stuff for a girl who received a diary on her 13th birthday and becomes curious about her body and growing up. She wrote about these things in her diary. Her father was given Anne’s diary upon her death and he worked to organize the papers and get the diary published. He didn’t include the more controversial material. He had editorial control of the manuscript.

I’m a reader. I don’t like book bans. It’s an individual’s choice whether to read a book or not. In the case of school assignments, it’s different. Young children have no business reading soft porn in classrooms. Teachers have to use discretion, as do school boards. I’m coming down on the side of letting eighth graders read the graphic adaption. Anne Frank was 14 when she wrote this. Eighth grade students are 13-14 years old. Anne was their age when she wrote it. It isn’t some pervy adult writer trying to indoctrinate children.

According to some reports, the teacher asked for a discussion on molestation. That’s a bridge too far. She should have known better. She showed poor judgement.

Indeed.
