EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY: The world may be careening toward a 1970s-style energy crisis – or worse.

Current and former energy officials tell CNN they worry that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in the wake of years of underinvestment in the energy sector have sent the world careening into a crisis that will rival or even exceed the oil crises of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Unlike those infamous episodes, this one is not contained to oil.

“Now we have an oil crisis, a gas crisis and an electricity crisis at the same time,” Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency watchdog group, told Der Spiegel in an interview published this week. “This energy crisis is much bigger than the oil crises of the 1970s and 1980s. And it will probably last longer.”

Left unsaid: Underinvestment is largely due to overregulation and government-fueled expectations about levels of “renewable” energy production that never materialized.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Lunatic Fringe Thinks Pride Parades Are Good for Kids. “Gosh, it seems like just yesterday that I was writing about being really annoyed by Pride Month even though it just began. Less than a full three days into this year’s version I’m already feeling like I’m going to be drowning in rainbow-colored inanity.”

WOEING: NASA just bought the rest of the space station crew flights from SpaceX. “The announcement also suggests that SpaceX will fly more than twice as many crews to the space station than the other partner in NASA’s commercial crew program, Boeing. Under the new agreement, SpaceX would fly 14 crewed missions to the station on Crew Dragon, and Boeing would fly six during the lifetime of the station.”

Boeing’s Starliner has been a big disappointment.

DECOUPLING: Amazon to pull Kindle out of China, other businesses to remain. “Other Western internet companies, including Microsoft’s LinkedIn, Yahoo and Airbnb Inc have cut services in or retreated completely from China in recent months, amid government efforts to tighten control over online content and new laws targeting data sharing and customer privacy.”

THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THOSE WHO SHOW UP: China’s population is about to shrink for the first time since the great famine struck 60 years ago.

Theories differ about why Chinese women remain reluctant to have children in the face of state incentives. One involves having become used to small families, another involves the rising cost of living, another involves increasing marriage age, which delay births and the dampens the desire to have children.

In addition, China has fewer women of child-bearing age than might be expected. Limited to having only one child since 1980, many couples opted for a boy, lifting the sex at birth ratio from 106 boys for every 100 girls (the ratio in most of the rest of the world) to 120, and in some provinces to 130.

China’s total population grew by a post-famine low of just 0.34 in 1,000 last year.

Projections prepared by a team at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences have it falling this year – for the first time post-famine – by 0.49 in a thousand.

The turning point has come a decade sooner than expected.

Plus: “China’s working-age population peaked in 2014 and is projected to shrink to less than one third of that peak by 2100.”

IT’S WHAT THEY DO: Biden Administration Changes Rules To Get Graft Flowing To Leftwing Cronies Again. “My Working Theory is that every single expansion of the welfare state is merely a means to pass graft into the hands of Democratic Party cronies and leftwing activists. Today’s data point: Merrick Garland is bringing back Obama-era legally-mandated slush funds for leftwing activist groups scrapped by Trump.”

Me, yesterday: “Old Joe isn’t all there anymore, but he still knows exactly what to do with Other People’s Money. He might need help putting his pants on right-side-out, but don’t get in between the Big Guy and a big take.”

CAN’T STOP THE SIGNAL: The Daily Wire Comes Under ‘Sustained DDoS Attack’ Intended To ‘Disrupt’ Premiere Of ‘What Is A Woman?’ “The attack began shortly after the start of the live-stream of Daily Wire’s Backstage program, which preceded the premiere and featured Daily Wire hosts discussing the making and meaning of the film. Many users encountered difficulty accessing the live-stream due to the malicious event. Nevertheless, the event was the most trafficked live-stream in Daily Wire history.”

GET WOKE, GO BROKE: New York loses $19.5 billion in population exodus, IRS confirms. “Wirepoints, in its analysis, noted New York suffered the worst net loss of income of any state, with the $19.5 billion representing a 2.5 percent decline in adjusted gross income. The independent nonprofit research firm said New York lost $1 trillion in income through population losses since the beginning of the century.”
