CHANGE: Denver Schools Superintendent takes stand against anti-police policy after spate of school shootings: ‘I can no longer stand on the sidelines.’ “The Denver School Board unanimously voted to remove school resource officers in June 2020 after the murder of George Floyd. All officers were phased out from the city’s middle and high schools by the summer of 2021. The decision was declared a victory by community activists who had long campaigned to remove police officers from schools.”
STEPHEN KRUISER, NATIVE ARIZONAN, EXPLAINS: Kyrsten Sinema’s Messy Breakup With the Democrats Is Complete. “Given her history, it’s not difficult to speculate about Sinema caucusing with the GOP just to stick it to the Dems. That’s not really her style though. She’s a free spirit, but not a wild card. Her disagreements with the Democrats were driven by the fact that Arizona is a very purple state and she may be one of the last people in Congress who truly grasps the role of an elected official in a representative republic.”

YOUR NATIONAL DEFENSE ESTABLISHMENT: Pentagon doctors claim 7-year-olds can make decisions to be injected with hormones, puberty suppressants.
It’s been almost exactly 30 years since Col. David Hackworth wrote an article for Playboy titled “Nuke the Pentagon.” While his point then — “shut down the military clown show” — was spot-on, it’s even more so today.

OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY: Prescription for Housing? California Wants Medicaid to Cover 6 Months of Rent. “States are barred from using federal Medicaid dollars to pay directly for rent, but California’s governor is asking the administration of President Joe Biden, a fellow Democrat, to authorize a new program called ‘transitional rent,’ which would provide up to six months of rent or temporary housing for low-income enrollees who rely on the state’s health care safety net — a new initiative in his arsenal of programs to fight and prevent homelessness.”
How’s that arsenal been working out for ya?
FAILING ECON 101: California Senate approves first-of-its-kind ‘price gouging’ bill.
The bill would authorize the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission to set a maximum gross gasoline refining margin — and then establish a penalty for any California-based refineries that exceed that margin. The Commission would be required, however, to consider a refiner’s request for an exemption from that maximum margin.
In addition to setting these restrictions, the legislation would require that all penalties collected be deposited into a “Price Gouging Penalty Fund” in the State Treasury.
The bill would also establish the Division of Petroleum Market Oversight within the Commission — operating independently of the Commission authority and providing guidance to the governor on issues related to transportation fuel pricing and decarbonization.
High margins incentivize the increased production needed to bring down prices — and reduce margins.
But California isn’t interested in any of that, just in penalizing oil companies and creating a new slush fund. That part about the commission having to “consider a refiner’s request for an exemption” is a nice way of saying “graft.”

I’M NOT SAYING IT’S ALIENS…: The Mystery of Alleged Alien Object ‘Oumuamua Has Been Solved, Scientists Say. “A pair of scientists have presented a robust natural explanation that accounts for ‘Oumuamua’s strangest behaviors, including its puzzling speed boost as it hurtled through the solar system. The new research suggests that the object’s many years in interstellar space left it with an abundance of molecular hydrogen, which was transformed into gas in the presence of the Sun.”

WELL, SHE’S RIGHT: Sinema Trashes Dems: ‘Old Dudes Eating Jell-O.’
As she races to stockpile campaign money and post an impressive, statement-making first-quarter fundraising number, Sinema has used a series of Republican-dominated receptions and retreats this year to belittle her Democratic colleagues, shower her GOP allies with praise and, in one case, quite literally give the middle finger to President Joe Biden’s White House.
And that’s before an audience.
Speaking in private, whether one-on-one or with small groups of Republican senators, she’s even more cutting, particularly about Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, whom she derides in harshly critical terms, according to senior Republican officials directly familiar with her comments.
Sinema’s sniping spree has delighted the Republican lawmakers, lobbyists and donors who’ve taken in the show, giving some of them hope that she can be convinced to caucus with the GOP, either in this Congress or in the case she’s reelected as an independent.
Stay tuned…

COFFEE ACHIEVERS: Coffee lovers gain 1,000 steps a day, but get less sleep, study shows.
The research also looked at coffee’s effect on heart palpitations, a relatively common experience for healthy coffee drinkers. The study found that in healthy men and women, coffee did not cause a common type of palpitation known as premature atrial contractions, even though some health authorities have warned that this could be a side effect of drinking coffee.
But coffee consumption can lead to an increase in another type of heart palpitation, known as premature ventricular contractions. These extra or irregular heartbeats are fairly common and benign. Almost everyone experiences them on occasion, and while they can be unnerving, most experts say they’re not usually a cause for concern in healthy people.
Drink up!
