CRISIS BY DESIGN: Migrants found hiding in southern New Mexico middle school.

The latest incident happened last week.

According to the Gadsden Independent School District, there was another incident that occurred on March 20.

“Being that those schools are so close to the border. The proximity of the border, these types of events happen weekly,” said Refugio Socorro, a spokesperson with U.S. Border Patrol.

KOAT headed to the border wall and discovered an area called “The Anarpa Gap” an opening in the border wall about 5 miles from the school.

“A lot of people in that area that try to evade arrest from our apprehensions do have a criminal history or have immigration issues. So that’s the reason why they just take off running and go through locations they’re not even familiar with,” said Corrales.

A Santa Teresa Middle School mom who did not want to be identified told KOAT she gets nervous for her child’s safety.

She’s clearly nervous about more than her child’s safety.

SKYNET SMILES: F-16s arrive at Eglin to be modified with self-flying tech. “The arrival of the F-16s marks the service’s biggest step forward yet in standing up the program known as Venom, which stands for Viper Experimentation and Next-gen Operations Model-Autonomy Flying Testbed and aims to speed up the testing of autonomous technology on both crewed and uncrewed aircraft.”

If nothing else, they’re certainly pushing the performance envelope for acronyms.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: New York City Isn’t Going to Survive the Democrats’ Reign of Error. “When I first started hanging out there a lot it was just after Rudy Giuliani made them clean up the hookers, the chlamydia, and the fear of getting mugged. Native New Yorkers would publicly complain about the city losing its flavor; privately they would say that the place was much nicer.”

HUH, WHAT HAPPENED FOUR YEARS AGO? Here’s how much Americans say they need to retire — and it’s 53% higher than four years ago.

Americans have lofty goals for their retirement, with the typical worker believing they need $1.46 million to retire comfortably — a jump of 53% from their savings target in 2020, according to a new survey from Northwestern Mutual.

But most people are far from reaching that objective, with the study finding that the average amount held in a retirement account today is just $88,400. That means that the typical worker has a $1.37 million gap between their actual savings and their retirement aspirations.

Due to the impact of inflation and other financial pressures, Americans today believe they need to sock away more for their golden years compared with 2020, when the typical worker pegged a comfy retirement as requiring $951,000 in savings, Aditi Javeri Gokhale, chief strategy officer at Northwestern Mutual, told CBS MoneyWatch.

There are other contributing factors, but four years ago was when Washington set the money printing presses to Ludicrous Speed and they haven’t slowed down since.

TO BE FAIR, MOST HUMANS AREN’T VERY PERSUASIVE: GPT-4 is 82% more persuasive than humans, and AIs can now read emotions.

AI Language models, it seems, are already extraordinarily effective at changing people’s minds. In a recent pre-print study from researchers at EPFL Lausanne in Switzerland, 820 people were surveyed on their views on various topics, from relatively low-emotion topics like “should the penny stay in circulation,” all the way up to hot-button, heavily politicized issues like abortion, trans bathroom access, and “should colleges consider race as a factor in admissions to ensure diversity?”

With their initial stances recorded, participants then went into a series of 5-minute text-based debates against other humans and against GPT-4 – and afterwards, they were interviewed again to see if their opinions had changed as a result of the conversation.

In human vs human situations, these debates tended to backfire, calcifying and strengthening people’s positions, and making them less likely to change their mind. GPT had more success, doing a slight but statistically insignificant 21% better.

This is why the progressive left is hellbent on controlling AI outputs, even when that leads to laughably wrong results.

CYBERSECURITY: Does Malicious Backdoor Compromise SSH? “For those outside of tech, that sentence was an unreadable jumble of acronyms. For those inside tech, a chill probably ran down their spine, as those technologies are everywhere.”

THAT’S HOT: ‘Artificial sun’ sets record for time at 100 million degrees in latest advance for nuclear fusion.

This announcement adds to a number of other nuclear fusion breakthroughs.

In 2022, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility in the United States, made history by successfully completing a nuclear fusion reaction which produced more energy than used to power the experiment.

This February, scientists near the English city of Oxford announced they had set a record for producing more energy than ever before in a fusion reaction. They produced 69 megajoules of fusion energy for five seconds, roughly enough to power 12,000 homes for the same amount of time.

But commercializing nuclear fusion still remains a long way off as scientists work to solve fiendish engineering and scientific difficulties.

Nuclear fusion “is not ready yet and therefore it can’t help us with the climate crisis now,” said Aneeqa Khan, research fellow in nuclear fusion at the University of Manchester in the UK.

Nuclear fission is and has been ready for a long time.

And this from Rowling’s concluding tweet: “I’m currently out of the country, but if what I’ve written here qualifies as an offence under the terms of the new act, I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment.”

UPDATE: JK Rowling hate law tweets not criminal – police.

Well, that didn’t take long — but I wonder if next time Rowling will redouble her efforts.

KRUISER IS NOT GETTING COCKY: Political Polls Are Lucy and Republican Voters Are Charlie Brown. “Back in the Tea Party days, I used to say that any Republican candidate polling lead under six percent wasn’t outside the margin of ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now). Now that early voting starts sometime around Super Bowl Sunday and Election Day is Election Seven or So Weeks, I’ve revised that. If a Republican isn’t up by at least eight points in a poll, he or she is not outside the Margin of Magic Mail Ballots.”

WOEING FALLOUT: United asks pilots to take unpaid time off, citing Boeing’s delayed aircraft.

United confirmed the request for voluntary, unpaid time off. The airline previously said it would pause pilot hiring this spring because of aircraft arriving late from Boeing, CNBC reported last month.

The union said it expects United to offer more time off “for the summer bid periods and potentially into the fall.”

United was contracted to receive 43 Boeing 737 Max 8 planes and 34 Max 9 models this year, but now expects to receive 37 and 19, respectively, according to a company filing in February. It had expected Boeing would also hand over 80 Max 10s this year and 71 next year. That model hasn’t yet been certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, and the airline removed them from the delivery schedule because it is “unable to accurately forecast the expected delivery period,” it said in the filing.

The sad thing is that Boeing is the only American option remaining for large passenger jets.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Hamas Isn’t the Only Terrorist Group Getting a Boost From Biden. “The more that these wildfires keep popping up, the harder they are to extinguish. Joe Biden is essentially a foreign policy arsonist at this point. It’s global crisis wildfire whack-a-mole now. The Biden administration is too overwhelmed to do anything now even if it wanted to toughen up and address a problem like the resurgent ISIS.”
