STILL NOT READY FOR PRIMETIME: McDonalds is removing its AI drive-thru voice ordering system from over 100 restaurants after its mishaps went viral. “One video showed a woman attempting to order water and a cup of vanilla ice cream. The AI system accounted for those items but incorrectly added four ketchup packets and three butter packets to her order.”
WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT STUDIES? Impossibly high home price are ‘feudalizing’ California as unaffordable housing markets pose existential threat to middle class, study says.
The housing crisis represents an obstacle to upward mobility, and the Golden State risks suffering from especially acute stratification, according to the annual Demographia International Housing Affordability report, which was produced by Chapman University in California and the Frontier Center for Public Policy in Canada.
“High housing prices, relative to incomes, are having a distinctly feudalizing impact on our home state of California, where the primary victims are young people, minorities, and immigrants,” wrote Chapman’s Joel Kotkin. “Restrictive housing policies may be packaged as progressive, but in social terms their impact could be better characterized as regressive.”
The report points to “urban containment policies” that are meant to limit sprawl and increase density. Those have resulted in higher land prices, which have translated to dramatically higher home prices, it explained.
The trend toward increasing density was geared toward reducing reliance on cars and freeways, improving gridlock, and making neighborhoods more walkable. But the report said while such policies were well intentioned, they resulted in land prices being eight to 20 times higher in urban containment boundaries than outside of them.
Considering that Sacramento has been waging war on the middle class on multiple fronts for a couple of decades or so and with easily predictable results, how can anyone claim “such policies were well-intentioned?”
KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Trump Shouldn’t Have Wussed Out When Agreeing to These Sham ‘Debates.’ “It doesn’t really matter what the rules are. From a Trump supporter’s point of view the problem is that it’s being moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash — two thoroughly awful Dem fluffer hacks.”
DON’T TRUST CHINA. CHINA IS ASSHOE: Boeing and Airbus planes were constructed with ‘fake’ Chinese titanium that could cause their jets to break apart in mid-air, FAA fears.
The Federal Aviation Administration revealed the problem after Boeing reported it to the agency when it was notified by parts supplier Spirit AeroSystems.
Spirit is the same company that made the door on the 737 Max plane that suffered a door blowout on January 5 and began Boeing’s recent spate of problems.
Faked documentation certifying the authenticity of the titanium could mean it was not up to standard or tested to withstand the rigors of air travel.
The FAA said it was ‘investigating the scope and impact of the issue’ and how it could affect the safety of the unknown number of planes using the parts.
Plus: “The suspect parts were used in planes made in 2019 to 2023 including the Boeing 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A220.”
This went on for four years?

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Washington Post Publisher and Incoming Editor Are Said to Have Used Stolen Records in Britain.
The publisher and the incoming editor of The Washington Post, when they worked as journalists in London two decades ago, used fraudulently obtained phone and company records in newspaper articles, according to a former colleague, a published account of a private investigator and an analysis of newspaper archives.
Will Lewis, The Post’s publisher, assigned one of the articles in 2004 as business editor of The Sunday Times. Another was written by Robert Winnett, whom Mr. Lewis recently announced as The Post’s next executive editor.
The use of deception, hacking and fraud is at the heart of a long-running British newspaper scandal, one that toppled a major tabloid in 2010 and led to years of lawsuits by celebrities who said that reporters improperly obtained their personal documents and voice mail messages.
Mr. Lewis has maintained that his only involvement in the controversy was helping to root out problematic behavior after the fact, while working for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation.
But a former Sunday Times reporter said on Friday that Mr. Lewis had personally assigned him to write an article in 2004 using phone records that the reporter understood to have been obtained through hacking.
Two things stand out. The first is that this 20-year-old story is news again. The second is that the NYT decided to publish it outside their paywall.
I’m starting to think that Lewis and Winnett might be serious about reforming the Washington Post — and so the knives are already out.

WOEING: Boeing is investigating fuselage problems on its 787 Dreamliners.
Reuters reports that company was investigating whether some of the fasteners on its 787 Dreamliner jetliners connecting the planes’ fuselages to their frames had been incorrectly installed, citing sources inside the company. It is not clear what effect the error would have had on plane safety.
In a statement to Quartz, the company confirmed that it was looking into the issue. “Our 787 team is checking fasteners in the side-of-body area of some undelivered 787 Dreamliner airplanes to ensure they meet our engineering specifications,” Boeing said. Neither Reuters nor Boeing said how many planes were affected.
Earlier this year, former Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour made headlines with claims that the skins on some 787 Dreamliners had been put on too unevenly and that many of the planes were in danger of ripping apart in mid-air. Between that plane and the 737 Max model — one of which lost a door plug mid-flight in January — quality issues and safety questions are surrounding models that make up nearly 90% of the plane manufacturer’s current order backlog.
“The in-service fleet can continue to safely operate,” Boeing said in its statement.
A couple of online acquaintances have already sworn off flying on any 737 MAX aircraft and now this…

THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT ALL THE RIGHT PEOPLE GOT THE MONEY: Dem Gov Promised 10,000+ EV, Battery Jobs — $1 Billion And Years Later, She’s Not Close. “Whitmer and the state government have already spent $1 billion of the $2 billion pledged to five different projects to build EV battery factories or expand EV production, but only about 200 jobs have been created, a far cry from the 12,000 jobs Whitmer has stated the companies will ultimately provide for Michiganders, according to Bridge Michigan, a Michigan-focused nonprofit publication of the Center for Michigan. Two years after the subsidies were extended in 2022, only 2% of the jobs promised have been delivered while the state-backed projects have downsized relative to original plans or faced delays.”

I’M ENJOYING THE EURO-MELTDOWN OVER THE RECENT EU ELECTIONS: Macron Is Destroying His Democracy to Save It
Even the most formidable French leader of the 20th century was ejected from power by a dissatisfied electorate. What makes Macron think he can do better?
The only credible answer, it seems to me, is that he has belatedly embraced the power of chaos. , he has decided that his goals can be most successfully achieved by utterly destroying the existing system of political parties and coalition.
Already in the past few days, profound realignments have taken place on the left and right of the political spectrum. It is not impossible that the French center right—the political heirs of Gaullism—will all but disappear. On the left, the real fear of a far-right government has forced entirely incompatible politicians, from Trotskyists to centrist social democrats, into an ad hoc alliance. In the best-case scenario, Macron emerges from this turmoil as the only credible figure of government, like a revolutionary leader left standing after a purge.
But the risks of unleashing chaos are huge. Macron could lose his parliamentary power and his party. He could suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of an angry electorate. Most of all, he could permanently tarnish his legacy by being the first French president to swear in a far-right prime minister who is supported by a far-right majority in parliament. The symbolism of this would be almost as powerful as the notorious picture of Pétain shaking hands with Hitler in 1940.
It’s only been a few days and already the Hitler references are flying.

THIS IS HUGE AND THE PRESS HASN’T DONE MUCH MORE THAN YAWN: So Long, Petrodollar: US-Saudi Arabian Agreement Ends After Fifty Years.
The petrodollar — a deal, not a currency — was born out of the late 1970s energy crisis. The United States, having just gone off the gold standard, struck a deal with Saudi Arabia — one of the largest producers of petroleum in the world — that meant the Saudis would price their oil exclusively in United States dollars and that any surplus revenues from their sales of petroleum would be invested in U.S. Treasury bonds. This had several effects: It ensured the U.S. a supply of oil, it established the U.S. dollar as the global reserve currency, and it helped the U.S. maintain what was, by today’s standards, its modest federal debt.
Those benefits are gone now.
If there is any remaining political, social, economic, or physical capital that the last generation of political leadership hasn’t frittered away, just give them another four years.

SMART: Space Force turning to commercial sats to enhance in-space monitoring.
Space Force interest in commercially owned neighborhood watch satellites largely has been limited to experiments — in part because commercial capabilities are somewhat embryonic, as license restrictions on sales of what is often called “non-Earth imaging” were lifted only last year.
That said, the Space Force in March released a request for information (RFI) seeking industry ideas to inform its early work to develop concepts for “for a constellation of free-flyer space vehicles with electro-optical payloads to detect, track, and characterize resident space objects in geosynchronous orbit.” The RFI explained that at the moment the service wants ideas to “support near and midterm studies and acquisition decisions” about satellites that can not just sit still and take pictures of adversary satellites but also perform “rendezvous and proximity operations” to stay up close to their targets.
Meanwhile, Gagnon stressed that the Space Force is “making great progress” in its current efforts to integrate commercial capabilities and thereby enhance its space monitoring chops.
Faster, please — and probably cheaper, too.
HMM: Ignore The Polls. Republicans Have A Major Voter Turnout Problem.
Maybe last night’s election was a fluke. After all, voter turnout was seemingly low and will likely be higher during this fall’s presidential contest.
While such reasoning is certainly viable, it doesn’t take into account the growing list of recent elections in which Democrats have widely outperformed expectations at the ballot box.
Take the 2022 midterms, for example. As The Blaze’s Daniel Horowitz observed in November, the majority of polls predicting the outcome of the country’s biggest gubernatorial and Senate races overestimated Republicans’ chances of victory.
In Nevada’s Senate race, for instance, the RealClearPolitics polling average showed Republican Adam Laxalt beating Democrat Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto by 3.4 points. Cortez Masto ended up winning the election by 0.9 points. Similar trends were also seen in Michigan’s gubernatorial race, in which Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer defeated Republican Tudor Dixon by 10.6 points despite the RCP average projecting the former to win by only 1 point.
These alarming trends continued into 2023. A FiveThirtyEight analysis published in September found that Democrats not only won the majority of special elections between January and September 2023, but that they over-performed their projected margins. Even in the smattering of races Republicans won, Democrats managed to surpass expectations.
Give voters a reason to turn out and they will. It’s been a long time since most Republicans could generate that kind of enthusiasm — because that’s what broken promises and “Democrat lite” policies do.
CHRISTIAN TOTO: Why Hollywood Can’t Save Joe Biden This Time.
Last month, the president’s public approval reached its lowest point in nearly two years. Biden’s approval rating among young Americans is particularly low.
His administration’s inability to connect with this crucial demographic spells trouble for the Democrats. The youth vote could prove to be a decisive factor in November.
Enter “Won’t PAC Down,” a new super PAC with a star-studded Hollywood lineup. The group’s mission? Rejuvenate Biden’s appeal among young voters.
