EVERGREEN HEADLINE UNDER BIDEN-HARRIS: More Terrorists Cross Border. “That tends to happen when the ruling class wants to preserve power by importing a new permanent voting bloc, and doesn’t give a damn who comes in so long as they vote for the right party.”

UNEXPECTEDLY: Venezuela’s Maduro Declares Victory and Third Six-Year Term After Disputed Election. “Exit polls show victory for opposition, but the president controls the elections board.”

More:

Almost immediately, residents around Caracas began banging on pots to protest the result, which was expected to be contested by the opposition with the help of its allies, including the U.S. At the same time, Maduro loyalists gathered outside the Miraflores presidential palace to celebrate the win with a concert.

“What a beautiful day we’ve lived,” Maduro told the crowd from a stage where he also danced to reggaeton music. “Thanks for giving me this victory that the people so deserve. This is the triumph of the ideals of equality.”

Maduro’s continued hold on power in oil-rich Venezuela is likely to make it harder for the U.S. and its allies to resume normal diplomatic relations and fully lift sanctions leveled against the regime for human-rights abuses and corruption. That could prolong an economic crisis that has led to the exodus of nearly eight million people during Maduro’s rule, with many settling in the U.S. and other Latin American countries.

The result is also a blow to the Biden administration, which had offered concessions in recent months in exchange for commitments to hold free elections, but instead saw Maduro tighten his grip.

Not everyone in the Biden-Harris administration felt the blow:

Yet another dreadful preview of what a Harris administration would be like.

21ST CENTURY WARFARE: Ukraine Strikes Russian Long-Range Strategic Bomber.

Ukrainian drones have hit a remote Russian airbase in the Arctic, destroying at least one strategic bomber, it has been reported.

Ukrainian media said the attack on the Olenya airfield in the Murmansk region damaged a Tupolev Tu-22M3 long-range supersonic bomber-missile carrier, which can fire AS-4 heavy anti-ship or Kh-22 cruise missiles.

Ukraine had downed a Tu-22M3 for the first time on April 19 according to Ukraine’s air force, with the aircraft crashing in Russia’s Stavropol Krai just after Russia launched an attack on Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region.

Plus: “Olenya airfield is more than 1,200 miles from the Ukrainian border.”

“Safe area” doesn’t have much meaning where drones are concerned — and I’m referring to us, not just the Russian Federation.

DECOUPLING: Five states order employee pension funds to divest from China amid increasing tension.

Indiana, Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas are leading the calls to divest from the economic powerhouse, over fears that U.S. assets could be frozen if conflict breaks out between China and Taiwan, Politico reported Friday. But other states have passed laws that force divestment from other hostile countries in the past.

“This is a great issue for folks to put politics aside, circle the wagons and say ‘We’re going to stand against the Communist Chinese Party and all the threats they pose to our nation,’” Indiana state Sen. Chris Garten, who co-sponsored his state’s bill, told the outlet.

Indiana passed its law that prohibits the state from investing in Chinese entities last year, and state pension funds have started the divesting process. Missouri also passed its law last year, and the primary U.S. federal pension fund, the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, announced it would stop investing in China last November.

Oklahoma GOP Gov. Kevin Stitt ordered state agencies to prepare divestment plans from China last month, claiming he wanted to be prepared in case the situation escalates. He also announced other measures that would protect state tax dollars from “Chinese aggression.”

From Beijing’s corruption, too.

WOEING: Retired Astronaut Admits Boeing’s Starliner Has Trapped Crew in Space.

With two NASA astronauts still stranded in space for weeks, officials at the space agency have insisted that the troubled Boeing Starliner, plagued with technical issues, can take the two explorers back to Earth.

So, why haven’t they already?

An unnamed retired astronaut tells The Atlantic the obvious truth that NASA has been dancing around since the beginning of this space boondoggle: it’s just too risky right now.

“Of course they don’t feel comfortable putting them in the vehicle,” the retired astronaut told the magazine, referring to the Starliner, which transported the astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) back in June and is meant to return them back home. “Otherwise they would have put them in it already.”

Maybe it’s time for NASA and Boeing to take their lumps and abandon Starliner.

FLORIDA MAN FRIDAY [VIP]: He Was 10 Crew Members Short of Ocean’s 11. “It’s time for your much-needed break from the serious news and this week we have a thrilling low-speed chase, the most honest criminal in the world, and the most cram-packed headline ever to come out of Texas.”

NOBODY USES DRONES ANYMORE, THEY’RE TOO POPULAR:

UGH: B-1 bomber crash report blasts crew mistakes, culture of ‘complacency.’ “The investigation, which Air Force Global Strike Command released on July 25, also found that poor weather conditions, a lack of discipline, poor resource management and communication, and ‘an organizational culture that tolerated decaying airmanship skills’ were among the other factors contributing to the Jan. 4 crash.”

IMPRESSIVE: JWST Discovers a Super-Jupiter: Its First Directly Imaged Exoplanet. “What’s even more exciting is that exoplanet has been imaged directly as a discrete and separate entity independent of observations of its star. It’s also the first exoplanet to have been imaged by JWST without first having been imaged using telescopes on the ground.”

DOWN THE MEMORY HOLE: Inside Kamala Harris’s Plan To End Cash Bail and ‘Transform The Criminal Justice System.’

The elimination of cash bail and court-ordered fines are just two ways Vice President Kamala Harris wants to “transform the criminal justice system” and “end mass incarceration,” according to a memo from her failed 2020 presidential campaign.

The memo, which is no longer available on her campaign website, describes what would be the most dramatic overhaul of how the nation confronts criminality. The “guiding principles” listed by Harris include an “end [to] mandatory minimums.”

Harris’s proposals put a spotlight on her history as one of the most left-wing lawmakers in the Senate. They also offer a preview into how she could govern as president. On the campaign trail, Harris enthusiastically supported a number of left-wing criminal justice initiatives not outlined in her plan, such as slashing the budgets of police departments and allowing convicted murderers and rapists the right to vote in federal elections.

“It is long past time to re-envision public safety by strengthening and supporting our communities and drastically limiting the number of people we expose to our criminal justice system,” the memo reads. “As president, Kamala will fundamentally transform how we approach public safety.”

Harris’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

The memory-holing will continue until goodthink is restored.

LINCOLN BROWN: AWFLS Assemble! “The usual suspects have also felt a heady rush of optimism at the prospect of President Harris. One has even climbed up on a cliff, lifted a buffalo horn to her lips, and sounded the AWFL call to arms.”
