PART 2: Is China Screwed? “Per capita wealth remains low, on the level of Mexico, the Maldives, and Kazakhstan. That means this mass of retirees won’t just contribute less to the economy, but will also require immense financial support — the kind China’s fractured pension and healthcare system isn’t remotely prepared for.”

COMING SOON FROM THE LEFT – NO DATA WONKS ON JURIES: Hans Bader of Liberty Unyielding spies a candidate for a forthcoming campaign, based on the fact statisticians are known for citing data such as between 1976 and 2005 Blacks were seven times more likely to be involved in homicides than Whites.

Three liberal justices on the Supreme Court gave the preview, according to Bader:

“On April 18, those three justices dissented from the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear a challenge to a death sentence, in Love v. Texas. The challenge was based on the failure to exclude a juror who cited crime statistics showing that ‘more violent crimes are committed by certain races’ in response to a questionnaire.

“The dissent, authored by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, argued that Texas judges hadn’t adequately considered claims of racial bias based on a juror’s answering ‘yes’ to a voir dire question, ‘Do you believe that some races and/or ethnic groups tend to be more violent than others?'”

BIDEN BETWEEN A MASK AND A HARD PLACE: Covid cases are up, but public disgust with mask mandates is off the charts. So how does President Joe Biden respond, Issues & Insights (I&I) asks this morning?

“Does he relent on mandates and get blamed for another spike in COVID cases? Or does he invite an intense hostility from a public that is sick and tired of being bossed around by the likes of Anthony Fauci,” I&I wonders.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving party is my take on it, but I&I has a more productive suggestion: “Namely, that a free people can be trusted to do what is in their own best interest and accept the consequences of their decisions. Government’s role should be limited to providing accurate information about who is at risk, not stripping people’s liberties while telling them it’s for their own good.”

Not holding my breath, unfortunately.

EVERYTHING IS PROBLEMATICAL: Disney Thinks Tinker Bell and Captain Hook Are ‘Potentially Problematic.’ “Tinker Bell (yes, I thought it was one word too) raised concern because she is ‘body conscious’ and jealous of Peter Pan’s attention. A young attractive woman who cares about her appearance and likes boys—the horror! Meanwhile they reportedly fretted over Captain Hook because has a disability but likes to do villainous things, and that could be considered by some to be discriminatory.”

This is not a satire piece, by the way.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Growing Impotence of Old Media on Display At WaPo and CNN+. “It is important to acknowledge that corporate, mainstream media is losing the stranglehold it once had on the information flow in this country. It may not be happening as quickly as we’d like but it is happening.”

HMM: Russia Decides to Blame NATO for Sinking the Moskva. “It appears that the evolving Russian propaganda response to this catastrophe is not to deny that it happened, but to deny that it happened in the way it is described: The Ukrainians didn’t sink the Moskva; NATO sank the Moskva using Ukrainian proxies. As one Russian commentator put it, the Russian yellow press started disseminating the story that ‘the attack on the cruiser Moskva was a carefully planned joint action of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Western countries. In addition to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, military specialists from Britain, Canada and Australia took part in it.'”

That’s a non-trivial escalation of Moscow’s anti-Western propaganda effort.

EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY: The student loan debt cancellation trap. “Even if the government actually had the half-trillion dollars of “free money” you would need to make a significant dent in the total student loans out there (that wouldn’t even cover a third of it), are people with graduate degrees really the most needy demographic you could find to shower that money upon? . . . Matt is also correct about the awful political optics of this. The loan forgiveness under discussion would go almost entirely to college graduates. That is going to leave a lot of working-class Americans even more convinced that the system is rigged in favor of the elite. And while it should go without saying, Warren’s proposal does nothing for all of the people with mortgages, car loans, or business loans. They will all rightly be saying ‘what about me? When do my loans get forgiven?‘ That’s not going to create an army of happy voters.”

HE FIGHTS: DeSantis Takes the Fight Directly to Disney. “On Tuesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that he is calling on the state legislature to consider legislation in a special session to end the Walt Disney Company’s special protections after the company committed to opposing the recently signed Parental Rights in Education Act.”

DeSantis moves quickly, too — last week this was barely even a trial balloon.

BY ED LACY: Room to Swing (Annotated): The Pulp Noir Classic.    #CommissionEarned

Black private eye Toussaint Moore knew a murder frame-up when he saw one, especially when it was hung neatly around his neck. Instead of dawdling around New York waiting for the NYPD to arrest him for a murder he didn’t commit, he followed the one lead he had: the victim’s hometown in Ohio. Only a stone’s throw north of Jim Crow Kentucky. If he can’t find who wanted that white man dead, and quick, all he’s going to have left is room to swing!
