CIVIL RIGHTS UPDATE: California’s Gun Grabbers Screw Themselves. “In an attempt to subvert the Supreme Court’s clear directions in the Bruen decision, California’s gun grabbing Democrats have actually made their case weaker through their own arguments.”

HORRIFYING: Former Clinton Advisor Says Hillary Will Run Again. “I think I speak for everyone here at PJ Media when I say NOOOOOOOOO! in one of those blood-curdling hollers that shakes the stucco off all the houses in the neighborhood.”

UKRAINE WAR: ‘We’re Losing’ but Moscow Will Never Admit It, Russian Soldier Says.

“We’re losing now,” the purported soldier says, prompting an indignant response from his female relative, who replies, “Well it’s you guys who are losing there, but they are winning everywhere [else].”

“That’s the picture they paint for you on television, but in reality it’s drastically different here,” he says. “They will never show you this on television, they will never tell you the truth. We’re losing.”

Taken aback by the confession, the woman asks him to explain how Russian troops could be losing—and there seems to be no shortage of answers.

“We should have about 90 tanks left, and you know how many we have left? We have probably 14 tanks left,” the man says.

“You don’t have artillery?”

“We do, but it’s so curved you can measure the [target] misses in kilometers,” he says, adding that “Everything’s sad.”

Take these reports with a grain of salt, viewed through the fog of war.

Russia still holds a lot more of Ukraine than they started out with, but by every decent estimate, at a terrible cost. I think Glenn summed it up best last week: “Can Russia win a Pyrrhic victory in Ukraine? Maybe, though personally I doubt it. Can it win a non-Pyrrhic victory? Nope. That window has already closed.”

“CRUMBLED,” PAST TENSE: The Crumbling Foundations of the Fourth Estate.

Skepticism is a bedrock principle of journalism. “If your mother says she loves you, go check it out,” the old adage goes. So is full disclosure (“the more information the better”) and transparency (“Always tell readers how you know what you know”).

The board that oversees journalism’s most prestigious award, the Pulitzer Prize, and many of America’s most prestigious news outlets violated all three of those values this week.

This disquieting episode began on Monday when the board released a short statement saying that, “In the last three years, the Pulitzer Board has received inquiries, including from former President Donald Trump, about submissions from The New York Times and The Washington Post on Russian interference in the U.S. election and its connections to the Trump campaign – submissions that jointly won the 2018 National Reporting prize.”

The board said it had commissioned two “independent reviews” of the contested coverage, which “converged in their conclusions: that no passages or headlines, contentions or assertions in any of the winning submissions were discredited by facts that emerged subsequent to the conferral of the prizes. The 2018 Pulitzer Prizes in National Reporting stand.”

THE NEW SPACE RACE: The SLS rocket finally has a believable launch date, and it’s soon. “Under the agency’s current plans, the stacked SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft will roll out to its launch site at Kennedy Space Center on August 18. Then, there would be three opportunities—August 29, September 2, and September 5—to launch the vehicle before the window closes.”

THE PROTEST AGAINST THE WORKINGMAN: The Democrats’ green war on the working class.

As some of us have been pointing out ad nauseum, we don’t have a political, partisan divide in the US. We have a class divide that separates college-educated elites from the working class. And the left has become almost completely aligned with those college-educated elites.

How did this happen? Turn on CNN or MSNBC or open the New York Times and you’ll be told that the fault lies with the Democrats’ messaging. ‘Why do Democrats suck at messaging?’, asks Vanity Fair. ‘Do Democrats have a messaging problem?’, asks the New York Times. ‘Yes, Democratic messaging sucks. But it’s harder to fix than you think’, the New Republic explains.

But the real problem isn’t the Democrats’ messaging – it’s their priorities. In fact, their messaging is actually impeccable. It signals very accurately what their values are and, by extension, who they view as their base.

IRAN: Cover Your Head, Shoot Your Dog. “You’re not going to like this column, but it’s important to read it.”

FALLOUT: Czech Republic To Buy 24 F-35s to Modernize Air Fleet in Wake of Ukraine War, Ministry Announces. “The Czech Republic plans to purchase 24 F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters to replace their current fleet of 14 Gripen fighter jets, the defense ministry announced Wednesday, in the latest move by Prague to rapidly move toward NATO-standard weapons in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Performance-wise, replacing 14 Gripens with 24 F-35s is like trading in your Honda Accord for a pair of Corvettes.
