“Artificial astronauts” could fly as actual crew members on human missions to Mars, and elsewhere in space.
These rugged, space-rated artificial humans offer great advantages, advocates say. For example, they would not require the large amounts of consumables needed to support humans. They could also perform spacewalks without a life-support system.
While not everyone will agree on the predicted rate of development of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), the idea is that progress will be fast, commensurate with timescales over which Mars campaigns are planned and implemented, unlike in the past.
You didn’t think Elon Musk was developing autonomous humanoid robots just to do the dishes and vacuum the stairs, did you?

HMM: The YF-23 Black Widow II Could ‘Rescue’ The Navy’s F/A-XX Fighter.
The Navy’s F/A-XX fighter competition seeking to develop a sixth-generation stealth jet is caught in a tug-of-war between Congress and the Department of Defense. The latter wants to put the program on ice, while the former wants to fund the program (at least on a life-support level).
Caught in the crossfire are sixth-generation fighter designs proposed by Boeing and Northrop Grumman. In August, the corporations tantalized military aviation observers by releasing concept art—undoubtedly hoping to boost F/A-XX politically.
One shouldn’t assume too much from such graphics, given the Pentagon’s historical tendency to obfuscate concept art of advanced aircraft—or even mislead with it.
Still, the art (see below) gives the impression Boeing’s F/A-XX concept is inspired by its F-47 design currently being developed into a production model for the US Air Force. Meanwhile, Grumman’s artwork features elements harkening back to its legendary YF-23 ‘Black Widow’ prototype stealth jet.
There are plenty of folks who will tell you the Air Force should have chosen it over Lockheed’s YF-22 (now the F-22 Raptor) back in 1991.

FIRST, THEY BACKED DOWN ON THE NEW LOGO. NOW THIS: Cracker Barrel drops restaurant remodels after fan outrage.
Cracker Barrel announced it is suspending its restaurant remodels after facing public outrage over changes fans said abandoned the chain’s core values.
“You’ve shared your voices in recent weeks not just on our logo, but also on our restaurants. We’re continuing to listen. Today, we’re suspending our remodels. If your restaurant hasn’t been remodeled, you don’t need to worry, it won’t be,” Cracker Barrel said in a statement posted to its website.
Cracker Barrel said only four of its 660 locations have been remodeled and pledged that the project will not continue. The remodels dropped the kitschy Americana décor the chain is known for in favor of a more minimalist, modern look. The company said it will continue to invest in restaurant quality, putting a bigger focus on “the kitchen and on your plate.”
So after wasting all that money and generating all that controversy, they’re doing what they should have done in the first place and going back to basics.

A VERY PUBLIC EDUCATION: Civics teachers ‘don’t know what they can and can’t say.’
Teaching civics makes teachers nervous, concludes the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute in a new policy brief.
Many teachers “are insufficiently trained in both what to teach and how to teach it,” says the institute. They fear controversy and try to avoid complexity. “Most state standards are vague, and district policies rarely provide the clarity needed to manage contentious topics.”
Furthermore, there’s no consensus on the purpose of civics classes. Is the goal to create informed citizens or activists?
That depends on who’s in charge.
HARDBALL: Missouri Republicans advance plan to draw Rep. Cleaver into Republican-leaning seat.
The House voted 89-63 Monday night to adopt Rep. Dirk Deaton’s legislation, which would link a portion of Cleaver’s Kansas City-based district to a number of largely rural counties. It would also place other parts of the state’s largest city into the districts of Reps. Mark Alford and Sam Graves, put all of St. Charles County into Rep. Bob Onder’s 3rd District and add part of Jefferson County and all of Washington, Gasconade and Crawford counties to Rep. Ann Wagner’s 2nd District.
It’s a big reversal from just three years ago, when the GOP supermajority soundly rejected a 7-1 map to replace the current six Republican districts and two Democratic ones. Republicans in 2022 worried that splitting Democratic voters among Cleaver, Alford and Graves would make all the seats competitive – especially in a bad election year for the GOP.
But Trump has been prodding GOP-leaning states like Texas, Missouri, Indiana and Florida to overhaul their districts this year. The president’s party often does poorly in midterm elections, and some Missouri Republicans made no secret that they want to go after Cleaver to prevent Democrats from retaking the House next year.
It’s nice to see the GOP play by rules the Democrats thought were just for them.

James Biden hired a private investigator—a retired Secret Service agent who served on the security detail for Joe Biden—to find out whether a Chinese client suspected of bribery had an arrest warrant against him, a bombshell revelation that contradicts what the former first brother told Congress in a deposition last year.
Biden told House investigators in February 2024 he asked former Secret Service agent Dale Pupillo in 2017 to run a background check on Patrick Ho, an official with CEFC China Energy, a Chinese energy conglomerate with which Biden and his nephew Hunter Biden had a multimillion-dollar consulting contract.
Biden, who was warned he could be charged with perjury for lying in the interview, testified the background check was simply due diligence for his “own edification” prior to meeting with Hunter and Ho in Hong Kong. The background check was “not to inform or anything else,” said Biden. And asked by House Republicans whether the background check was “to try and understand whether or not there was a Federal investigation of Patrick Ho,” Biden replied: “I have no idea.”
But a new Department of Justice inspector general report casts doubt on that story.
The Biden name ought to be enough to cast doubt on any story.
