THE NEW SPACE RACE: SaxaVord prepares for first orbital launch. “A spaceport in the Shetland Islands expects to soon be ready to host the first vertical orbital launch from U.K. soil. In a presentation at the Farnborough International Airshow here July 23, Scott Hammond, deputy chief executive and operations director of SaxaVord Spaceport, said he expected the spaceport to receive the last of the licenses from U.K. regulators in September needed to host the inaugural launch of Rocket Factory Augsburg’s RFA ONE rocket there.”

WELL, BIDEN ISN’T RESIGNING, BUT HE’S GIVING WHAT LOOKS LIKE A CAMPAIGN SPEECH — FOR HIS NEXT 6 MONTHS IN OFFICE. It would help if he could speak like a normal person. His voice sounds weird and his enunciation is off. And his condemnation of extremism and violence would play better if angry mobs of terrorist sympathizers hadn’t invaded the Capitol and burned American flags while desecrating monuments around Washington.
It would be nice if we had a president who would protect our monuments.

My first thought abut tonight’s address is that he was going to resign, so Kamala could run as an incumbent. My second thought was that he wouldn’t resign, because then Kamala couldn’t run on being the first black woman president.

ANOTHER BLOW AGAINST THE ADMINISTRATIVE STATE: En Banc Fifth Circuit Concludes FCC’s “Universal Service” Fee Is Unconstitutional: A majority of the judges concludes this fee constitutes a tax, the authority for which is improperly delegated. “A petition for certiorari will almost certainly be filed by the federal government, and certiorari will very likely be granted.”
The majority here is right, and I hope the Supreme Court agrees.

SO A WHILE BACK I mentioned Andrew Wareham’s novel Damned Un-English, the first of a new series on WWI submarine warfare, and I should have also recommended John Biggins’ Otto Prohaska novels, which are WWI submarine warfare from the viewpoint of the Austro-Hungarian navy. Really excellent books, and the ending, in which the protagonist returns to base to discover that the empire he served no longer exists, and the confusion and dislocation attendant on that, felt . . . disturbingly modern.

Whenever a woman runs, you get a lot of other women trying to police dialogue. Remember Hillary’s “Ban Bossy” posse? They wanted you not to talk about women being bossy because Hillary is bossy. Now they’re demanding dignity for Kamala because, well, you know. None of this has to be consistent or make sense, it just has to intimidate opponents and encourage the mushy middle to not listen. Didn’t work for Hillary, won’t work here.
Also, Kamala is running against a guy known for decades as The Donald.
