ED MORRISSEY: WHAT FRESH HELL IS THIS? “Even on vacation, some topics just demand attention. And the weirdest video by a sitting governor ever definitely qualifies.”

Basically, we’re left with three versions of Hell from which to choose an explanation:

Whitmer and Plank want to create a cult by which Whitmer and Kamala Harris are high priestesses and everyone else is subservient to them
Whitmer and Plank are attacking Catholics and Christians in order to promote Kamala Harris and the radical queer agenda
Whitmer and Plank are big fans of submissive porn themes and think they should apply to politics.

So which fresh Hell is this?

Note: These are not mutually exclusive options, either.

We are ruled by crooks, cretins and creeps. Those are not mutually exclusive options either.

And a friend comments: “Kamala is all cringe. Hillary was and remains detestable but Kamala is the queen of cringe.”

OUR WORTHLESS RULING CLASS: FEMA and the Cultural Illnesses of the Age.

There are jobs that put people in daily contact with misery and despair and spiraling disorder, and all of the people who work in those jobs favor an affect of something that looks like boredom. If you’re an emergency room nurse or a homicide detective, you’re going to talk to people who sob and scream. They’re scared and in pain, so they’re in a state of emotional dysregulation. The worst day of their lives is your Tuesday shift. You know this, so you don’t descend into emotional dysregulation with them. You’re the person whose role is to enter disorder and make some degree of order.

So the disgusting performances of FEMA director Deanne Criswell and her boss, the relentlessly gormless Alejandro Mayorkas, are pathological in a way that I hadn’t imagined seeing.

“Relentlessly gormless.” Dead-on.

OPEN THREAD: Ring in the weekend.

THE NEW SPACE RACE: Shijian-19 reusable satellite lands after 2 weeks in space. “China’s first retrievable and reusable satellite returned to Earth late Thursday following two weeks of experiments in low Earth orbit. . . . The Shijian-19 mission is part of China’s broader space program, which includes ambitious plans for deep space exploration, a range of experiments aboard the Tiangong space station, and advancements in reusable space technologies.”

Its cargo: Breeding experiments. “China has a strong interest in space breeding of crops. Exposure to space conditions is thought to accelerate genetic mutations that may enhance crop resilience and productivity. With relatively little arable land, China aims to increase crop yields and agricultural output.”

THAT’S BECAUSE THEY’RE BACTERIOPHAGES: Toothbrushes and Showerheads Swarm With Unknown Viruses – And That’s Good News.

But, in the meantime, Hartmann cautions people not to fret about the invisible wildlife living within our bathrooms. Instead of grabbing for bleach, people can soak their showerheads in vinegar to remove calcium buildup or simply wash them with plain soap and water. And people should regularly replace toothbrush heads, Hartmann says. Hartmann also is not a fan of antimicrobial toothbrushes, which she said can lead to antibiotic-resistant bugs.

“Microbes are everywhere, and the vast majority of them will not make us sick,” she said. “The more you attack them with disinfectants, the more they are likely to develop resistance or become more difficult to treat. We should all just embrace them.”

Yes.
