UPDATE: Tweet from DC Draino deleted as it appears to be fake.

HE’S NOT WRONG: Josh Hammer: It’s Still the Economy, Stupid. “If the GOP wants to regain the public’s trust, it must present a compelling vision of what a sound conservative economic stewardship entails in the 21st century.”

More than a vision, it needs to produce results: Lower mortgage rates, higher wages, etc.

POLITICS AND POWER UBER ALLES:

DON SURBER: Trump taught Republicans how to win.

Chuck Schumer handed his head on a plate to President Trump last night as he surrendered on shutting down the government. After 40 days of slithering to the microphone each day with a new rant to an increasingly bored media about our favorite president, Chuck realized the futility of shutting down the government because all he did was anger the Democrat Party’s key constituent—welfare recipients—and leave helpless airline passengers stranded in city after city.

Trump meanwhile went about his life as usual, savoring every minute of his final presidency. He went to Asia and signed historic peace and trade agreements. He declared Columbus Day to be Columbus Day. He brought Big Pharma officials in to announce they are cutting prices. He golfed. He threw a big dinner at Mar-a-Lago. He paid the troops despite the shutdown.

Oh, and he kept putting sombreros on the head of Hakeem Jeffries in pictures and videos. Hakeem denounced the videos as racist and the media went out of its way to condemn it as deepfake.

Everyone else laughed and had a good time at the expense of the Dollar Store Obama. . . .

The reported ended, “According to a White House spokesperson, the ‘sombreros will continue until the Democrats reopen the government.’”

So Axios warned of a backlash from across the aisle.

What backlash? The Democrats have no power. They are a bunch of hapless fossils and children who cannot take a joke. In other words, they’re losers.

Oh, they won elections in blue states last Tuesday. Big Fat Deal. They are still losers and Trump showed them for who they are. Nothings.

Plus: “Trump gave Senate Republicans a tutorial on winning. They sat back and watched and took notes. With the exception of the preening Rand Paul, the senators hung together and showed the power of patience.” I’ve always been a fan of Rand Paul, but he seems to be joining the crowd of Republicans I once admired who can’t handle so much winning.

ROGER KIMBALL: The Heritage Foundation’s Meltdown: The Heritage Foundation’s Halloween fiasco revealed less about antisemitism on the right than about the establishment’s renewed war on Trump’s populist movement.

Another issue, and the one I wish to focus on here, is what I think of as the play behind the play in the attack on Kevin Roberts. John Daniel Davidson, writing in The Federalist, summed up the plot of that supervening play in the subhead to a recent column: “Genuine concern about antisemitism on the right is being hijacked by neocons to attack J. D. Vance in hopes of retaking control of the GOP.”

Bingo. In other words, two separate things can be true at once. I would add that it is not just J.D. Vance who is in the crosshairs but the entire MAGA, i.e., populist, agenda of Donald Trump. A long article published in The Wall Street Journal on November 7 epitomizes the point. “The Crack-Up at the Heritage Foundation,” runs its headline, “Is a Warning Sign for MAGA World.”

It is no secret that the Journal does not much like “MAGA world.” It does not like Trump’s immigration policy, either regarding the border or the illegal migrants who are already in the U.S. It does not like his economic policies, especially regarding tariffs. Nor does it like most planks of his foreign policy.

In the course of its story, the Journal notes that it reached out several times to both Roberts himself and to other Heritage spokesmen. It got no response. That is hardly surprising. The Journal’s coverage of Heritage under Roberts has been unremittingly hostile.

The Old Guard out, but not down.

OPEN THREAD: Ring out the weekend.

ANDY KESSLER: The Politics of Anarchy: Socialists regard disorder as a means to an end: government control.

Anarchists detonated a bomb in 1920 at J.P. Morgan & Co.’s headquarters at 23 Wall St., killing 38 and wounding more than 100. Scars from that bombing are still visible today. So are anarchists. As the little girl said in “Poltergeist II,” “They’re back.”

Will new socialist New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani lead to disorder? Free party buses and no cops! Here’s a hint: He tweeted in 2020, “Taxation isn’t theft. Capitalism is.” How about a 100% tax rate, comrade?

Anarchy is in the air. Alex Soros celebrated the New York mayoral result by tweeting, “The American dream continues!” His father’s Open Society Foundations have a history of funding anarchy-producing criminal-justice reforms and antipolice movements. Some American dream.

Why anarchy and destruction of social order? Always ask: Who benefits? The breaking down of society is a means to an end—the long game of political control. Citizens scream, “Save me!” This isn’t new. The Reichstag fire. Food shortages driving a Bolshevik uprising. Pandemic riots. Anarchy works. I have no love for czars, but control often passes to political systems that are much worse. Socialism. Communism. Authoritarian control. Only the new rulers are better off.

There’s a meme for this.
