A Seattle councilor who backed calls to defund the police has a new idea to cut car thefts – ban the cars.
Tammy Morales is among a group of progressive lawmakers from Democrat cities who have blamed car makers Kia and Hyundai for soaring rates of auto crime, demanding they make their products harder to steal.
The Washington State capital launched a lawsuit against the manufacturers last year after videos of car thefts trended on TikTok, and is now calling for federal regulators to enforce a nationwide recall.
But the socialist leader had little to say about the city’s soft-on-crime policies that have seen car thefts more than double in the last five years.
‘I won’t speak to the motivations of young people, except to say that they are young people and when issued a challenge, especially on something like social media, they like to take it up,’ she said.
The Seattle police department has lost around 600 police officers since the City Council began defunding the department in 2020.
In that time car thefts have jumped from fewer than 4,000 to the record 8,379 recorded last year.
The funding cuts began with the riots that rampaged across the city in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis by a white police officer, riots that Morales was accused of defending.
‘What I don’t want to hear is our constituents told to be civil, not to be reactionary, to be told looting doesn’t solve anything,’ she told a council meeting at the time.
‘It does make me wonder why looting bothers people so much more than knowing that across the country, black people are being killed around the country.’

That same month, co-host Jessica Tarlov took issue with fellow panelist Jesse Watters insinuating that Harris’ past romantic relationship with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown was “how she got ahead in politics.”
“The Five” has not been shy about discussing Harris’ prior relationship with Brown and making jokes about it.
We reported earlier how Joe Biden is obsessed with “Morning Joe,” has frequently consulted with people on the show, and likes to talk to Scarborough for his take. Now, that’s a bad move given how wrong Scarborough often is, but that may be another reason Biden is so often wrong. Then, of course, what does that mean “Morning Joe” is worth for objective opinion on Biden? I don’t think anyone thought they were objective, but this makes both sides look worse. It’s like a very bad mutual admiration bubble.
Apparently, Kamala Harris likes the show, too. She and her husband had dinner with Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough last month. It’s one thing if it’s an opinion person, but another if it’s people claiming to be presenting objective news.
It also says something about her if she can’t take the criticism and if it truly is causing her “high anxiety.” Biden is already weak and can’t take criticism. If Harris gets so upset about jokes from “The Five,” it shows she has a pretty brittle personality as well.
Dan Quayle, a spry 76, likely smiles wryly as such reports, as he remembers when the entire news media and late night talk shows obsessed over destroying him in the late 1980s when the DNC-MSM still had their lock on public opinion, as this 1991 Chicago Tribune article recaps: The Unmaking of Dan Quayle.

The Almanac of American Politics concluded that ”his career taken as a whole suggests that he is not a political accident, but a fortunate young man with good political instincts.” Such was the Quayle that George Bush selected as his running mate-a man he had repeatedly heard described by the nation`s leading media as an accomplished legislator and a successful politician.
The press corps encamped in New Orleans, however, seemed either unaware of Quayle`s record as a legislator and politician, or merely uninterested. The fact that Quayle`s announcement was a surprise, and that reporters were far from their usual Washington sources, perhaps explains why they focused less on Quayle`s record in government and politics and more on his personality and private life.
The rest is history. Having brought Quayle to national prominence by praising him, the press proceeded to destroy his reputation. Like Hollywood`s legendary gossip columnists, the national press corps has shown with Quayle that it can make a politician`s reputation-and can break it too.

LATERAL MOVE: John Podesta Replaces John Kerry As U.S. Climate Envoy.
Podesta now oversees implementation of Biden’s signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act. The law devoted billions of dollars to accelerating the nation’s transition to wind, solar and other sources of clean energy. Podesta also played a critical role in brokering the 2015 Paris climate agreement as a counselor to President Barack Obama, and helped steer President Bill Clinton’s environmental policies while serving as White House chief of staff.
The move comes at a crucial time for Biden’s climate agenda and global efforts to slow Earth’s dangerous warming. The president is racing to finalize strong environmental regulations by the end of his current term, as former president Donald Trump campaigns on a pledge to undo many of those actions. The Messenger was founded by [Jimmy] Finkelstein in 2023, two years after he sold The Hill — a Beltway-based print and digital publication co-founded by Finkelstein’s father in 1994 — to Nexstar for $130 million.
- Finkelstein had previously co-founded a media holding group that purchased outlets like Adweek, Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter from Nielsen in 2009.
- The Messenger hired 300 people across a few short months and paid them above market wage.
The big picture: The Messenger was built on the flawed premise that a big, generic news audience has value. It doesn’t anymore.

Over the last eight months, I cannot remember a single instance where The Messenger hit my radar. And in this media environment where billions of corporate media dollars are spent to protect Democrats and cover up their corruption and scandals, it is not difficult for an outlet with $50 million to stand out. But first, they have to stand up. The formula is simple: all a Messenger has to do is use those 500 journalists to hold Democrats as accountable as the corporate media holds Republicans. It’s “pro-democracy.” On the basis of that pitch, McGowan, an adept political operator, has raised millions from billionaire donors and grown the company into ten newsrooms across the United States.
Despite the apparent success of Courier, however, journalists who have worked at the outlet say the ideals it publicly professes are a far cry from reality. “What she’s saying is objectively not true,” one former Courier reporter told me. “I know that that’s her line that she uses to justify it and make it seem like it’s a media company. But no. They hired journalists and then gave them explicit instructions to promote Democrats.”

Massachusetts Democratic Governor Maura Healey recently announced plans to convert an active, state-owned recreation center into a homeless shelter for migrants, including those currently sleeping at Boston’s Logan Airport, WHDH reported Tuesday.
Healey’s decision to use the community center as a temporary overflow shelter for illegal migrants is facing backlash from local residents and families who utilize the center’s recreational space.
According to WHDH, Melnea Cass recreation center in Roxbury, a neighborhood in Boston, will begin welcoming migrants on Wednesday. The center will house up to 100 families or 400 individuals waiting for permanent accommodations.
Healey told the news outlet Tuesday that the decision was “just born out of necessity.”
“We’ve been all over the state,” she said. “We’re now coming to Boston.”
City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson described the Roxbury community as “very vulnerable.” She noted that programs currently held at the recreation center will be moved. It is unclear where they will be relocated.
“The constituents have been stating loud and clear, ‘You are displacing us,'” Fernandes Anderson told WHDH. “But this means that there’s an opportunity here.”

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen offered a rare moment of Biden administration transparency on the economy this week.

Businesses in downtown Oakland are hiring private security for employees and asking employees to stay inside as crime in the city worsens, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Blue Shield, a health care provider that moved its headquarters to Oakland in 2019, is offering employees security guards and ride-hail services due to the rise in crime in Oakland, according to the Chronicle. Kaiser Permanente, a healthcare giant, is asking employees to stay in their buildings, according to the Chronicle.
“In response to the current crime environment affecting all businesses and the entire community of Oakland, as well as other communities across the country, we continue to provide guidance to keep employees as safe as possible,” Kaiser spokespeople said in a statement, according to the Chronicle.

As Democrats and Republicans spar over border-security funding and Abbott’s war with Biden and blue state governors and mayors continues, how the president chooses to mitigate the border-related damage to his reelection hopes will be telling. He may be in cognitive decline, as his critics insist, but he is still a career politician capable of reading the polls, which show that the public blames him for the crisis. Many independents and a not-insignificant portion of Democrats want a secure border—perhaps explaining why Biden said over the weekend that he will “shut down” the border if Congress sends him border-security legislation that includes funding for Ukraine.
“(The legislation) will also give me as president, the emergency authority to shut down the border until it could get back under control,” he said in South Carolina. “If that bill were the law today, I’d shut down the border right now and fix it quickly.”
Trusting Biden to fix the border “quickly,” or ever, would be a bit like trusting a doctor who accidentally amputated your leg to sew it back on. But even as 55 percent of Americans view Biden unfavorably, according to the RealClearPolitics average, he knows he’s likely to face an opponent with roughly the same unfavorable score. The president can placate his base and try to shift the conversation back to issues he prefers—abortion, or “saving democracy”—or he can make a last-ditch effort to mitigate the border crisis and risk alienating progressives, already furious with him about the war in Gaza. Biden’s “shut down the border” comments suggest that he is listening to warnings from influential voices like Ruy Teixeira at the Liberal Patriot, who has argued that immigration could cost him the election. If it’s nothing short of his political hide that finally serves to motivate President Biden to enforce the nation’s laws at the border, millions of Americans will take it.

ASKING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Is Taylor Swift a psyop?
Every now and then, people on the right — who should, perhaps, be expected to be more familiar with the dynamics of business than their friends on the left — discover the existence of something called “marketing.” Yes, there is a phenomenon called “public relations,” which ensures that products and public figures might not be promoted in completely authentic ways. (Have I blown your mind yet? Sheeple.)
So, is Taylor Swift really passionate about football? Perhaps not. Is there an element of career-mindedness in the relationship between Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce? Perhaps. But that doesn’t make it an “op,” That’s how celebrity culture has always worked.
Somehow, Swift-based suspicions grew more elaborate. “Thinking about when Taylor Swift called out the Soros family in 2019 for buying the rights to her music,” Jack Posobiec, senior editor at Human Events tweeted, “And then how she came out a super liberal in 2020.” I’m not sure how Taylor Swift criticizing the Soros family is evidence that she is now cooperating with the Soros family. There is a lot to criticize about George Soros but his name is not some sort of ancient curse that taints anyone who happens to say it.
A minute of Googling illustrated to me that Ms. Swift had been supporting liberal causes like LGBT rights and pro-choice advocacy before then. She became more vocal in 2020, to be sure, but it was 2020. What celebrity didn’t? Now, you could make an interesting argument about how mainstream culture prods celebrities towards progressivism (Swift continues to face criticism in left-leaning outlets for not being an active enough “ally.”) But you don’t have to pull a conspiracy theory out of your ear.
Too late: Vivek Ramaswamy took the baton from Posobiec and ran with it. “I wonder who’s going to win the Super Bowl next month,” he posted: “And I wonder if there’s a major presidential endorsement coming from an artificially culturally propped-up couple this fall. Just some wild speculation over here, let’s see how it ages over the next eight months.”

So, if 18 percent say they’re more likely to vote for a candidate backed by Swift, and 17 percent say they’re less likely to vote for a candidate backed by Swift . . . how, exactly, is she going to sway the 2024 presidential-election outcome? That 1 percent difference in one poll is supposed to be persuasive evidence that “Taylor Swift could sway [the] 2024 election”? The word “could” is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
