GET WOKE, GO…: How Disney’s Snow White remake became a $270 million headache.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, what’s the most contentious blockbuster of them all? On any list of the most trouble-plagued releases in recent Hollywood history, Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would surely rank heigh-ho, heigh-ho highly. The $270 million-budget spectacle, starring Rachel Zegler as the storybook princess, finally hits cinemas this month after four years of seemingly never-ending online fury and negative news stories.

From calls to boycott the film and attacks over its alleged “f______ backward” depiction of little people, all the way to the sight this weekend of the movie’s two biggest stars onstage at the Oscars, supposedly refusing to make eye contact with each other over disagreements about Gaza, this is a film beset by controversies. Controversies that, even with a magical, fortune-telling looking-glass like the one hung in the Evil Queen’s castle, Disney could hardly have seen coming.

In 2023, Zegler was further attacked for appearing to criticise the 1937 Snow White, which she labelled “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power and what a woman is fit for” in an interview at Disney’s D23 convention. The original film was, by today’s standards of consent, a “love story with a guy who literally stalks her,” she explained. The upcoming modern rework of the tale, the actress announced, would feature a more empowered princess, who’s “not going to be saved by the prince”.

Flash-forward to this year, when after a pair of disastrous trailers in 2024 were met with over one million dislikes each on YouTube, Disney is now incorporating footage from the original Snow White in their newest ads:

SKYNET SMILES WITH THE PEDAL TO THE METAL: Driverless Maserati racing car sets world record for autonomous speed. “Italian automobile brand Maserati has set a new land speed record with its driverless MC20 Coupe, which reached 197.7 miles per hour without a driver at the helm during a racing event at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.”

WHY THE ALAMO ENABLED LIBERTY’S SURVIVAL: This may come as a shock to more than a few Instapunditeers, but Rod Martin makes a strong case for the proposition that the Texas Revolution kept the cause of liberty alive in the New World.

IF THEY CAN’T EVEN AGREE ON WHAT IS A SANCTUARY CITY: Then there may well be little hope that House Democrats and Republicans will ever be able to concur on comprehensive immigration reforms. Wednesday’s sanctuary cities congressional hearing offered little reason for optimism.

HITLER ALL THE WAY DOWN:

The grotesque banalization of Hitler and Hitlerism proceeds apace. The American Left’s discourse is replete with comparisons of President Donald J. Trump to Adolf Hitler and constant evocations of a dangerous “fascist” threat to democracy supposedly coming from an altogether illiberal Right. Kamala Harris labeled Trump a fascist and Nazi sympathizer in a CNN town hall meeting in October, and she and the mainstream media continued to pile on until the November election.

When Trump held a rally at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on October 27, a little over a week before the election, many Democrats, and the increasingly hysterical talking heads on CNN and MSNBC, compared that rally to a meeting of the pro-Nazi German-American Bund in that same venue in 1939. Completely disregarding the impressively multiracial character of the MAGA supporters gathered to hear Trump, as well as the large contingent of Orthodox and Hassidic Jews also in attendance, the media incessantly identified Trump with Hitler and “fascism.” Not only was the deep-seated evil that was National Socialism trivialized beyond recognition, and not only was fascism crudely (and absurdly) identified with any opposition to a hard Left agenda, but crucial distinctions between fascism, National Socialism, and democratic conservatism were elided in a deeply misleading manner.

This drumbeat continues to this day. The Trump/fascism/Nazism elision is commonplace in leftist discourse. An article in the Harvard Political Review from January attempts to give scholarly cover to this type of defamation: “Trump Rhetoric Echoes Hitler.” The author takes it for granted that Trump is a racist anti-Semite, and that he hates immigrants tout court. The fact he has built a large and varied multiracial political coalition is passed over in silence, as is his warm relationship with Israel. Trump, it is said, “is unfit to serve as the president of a nation founded upon the celebration of racial, ethnic, and cultural heterogeneity.” While it is true that the Founders loathed chattel slavery and declared that “all men are created equal,” dogmatic multiculturalism was not their vision of American self-government.

Just the other day Kamala Harris’s running mate, Tim Walz, bemoaned the fact that the country was in the process of being “stolen by fascists and Nazis.” Even though a storm of criticism was directed his way, Walz has since refused to apologize. He even had the chutzpah to say he did not have Republicans in mind.

Examples of this reductio ad Hitlerum, as Leo Strauss once suggestively called it, are legion and are likely to continue for a very long time to come, thus compounding the damage. As Dennis Prager (himself Jewish) argued in an insightful syndicated column published on election day, immense moral and civic damage has been done to our country by leftists insisting on “calling Donald Trump a fascist and a Nazi and declaring him ‘Hitler.’” Prager points out that “if Trump is Hitler, then Hitler was Trump. Hitler was nothing worse than a German version of Trump—not the instigator of World War II and the creator of the Holocaust; just a German Donald Trump.”

Don’t overthink it; last month when CBS’s Margaret Brennan absurdly claimed to Marco Rubio that JD Vance “was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide,” Mark Steyn responded, “I did not think it was possible to despise the ‘mainstream’ media more than I already did. In a society thoroughly moronized by Brain-Dead Brennan and her ilk, Hitler is the sole remaining historical figure anybody’s heard of. And they can’t even get that right. ‘Weaponising’ free speech? What does that even mean? In Germany, tweets get you gaoled but rape is just part of your ‘cultural tradition’. And CBS News knows which side it’s on.”

MAKING IT MORE LIKE SPACEX: Jeff Bezos brings Amazon work culture to Blue Origin. “Jeff Bezos has moved to introduce a tough Amazon-like approach to his rocket maker Blue Origin, as the world’s third-richest person seeks to revive a company that has lagged behind Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The space company’s founder and sole shareholder has pushed to shift its internal culture with management hires from Amazon, while implementing policies akin to the ecommerce giant, including longer working hours and more aggressive targets. Half a dozen current and former senior Blue Origin employees told the Financial Times that the billionaire had taken a prominent role in helping reset a company that has reached orbit only once, compared with SpaceX achieving the feat more than 450 times.”

ANSWERING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Do weekends really affect surgical outcomes? “Researchers from Houston Methodist Hospital, UCLA, the University of Toronto, and others have tried to answer a longstanding fear that undergoing surgery on a Friday leads to higher levels of complications or even death. Their analysis of data from 429,691 patients has revealed higher rates of complications, readmissions, and mortality in the days and months following surgery compared to those who had procedures performed after the weekend.”

ON BRAND FOR GOVERNOR HAIR-GEL:

Newsom is trying to become a podcast media star so he can run for president as one of those instead of as the former governor of a failing state.

HE’S RUNNING: Newsom Calls Male Participation in Female Sports ‘Deeply Unfair,’ Highlighting Split in Democratic Party.

Governor Gavin Newsom diverged from the Democratic Party’s commitment to let transgender-identifying male athletes participate in female sports this week when he acknowledged that it was “deeply unfair” for women.

“I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” the California Democrat said in the first episode of his new podcast. “I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.”

Newsom made the shocking admission while speaking with conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, who pressed his progressive host to step up when it comes to upholding the sanctity of women’s sports. Politico first reported on his remarks.

“I revere sports, so the issue of fairness is completely legit,” Newsom continued. “And I saw that — the last couple years, boy did I [see] how you guys were able to weaponize that issue at another level.” After Kirk challenged him on the characterization, Newsom replaced the word “weaponize” with “highlight.”

The governor has signed numerous bills into law advancing the transgender ideology in California, including legislation that bans school districts from requiring staff to notify parents in the event their child identifies as transgender.

Before Newsom’s tenure, the blue state already had a law on the books that allowed men to compete with women in college and youth sports and allowed transgender students to use school restrooms that align with their gender identity. That law was signed by the former governor, Jerry Brown, in 2014.

When does the rubber meet the road, though?
