After New Orleans officials were unsuccessful in their attempts to get state lawmakers to designate vast swathes of their city’s popular tourist areas as gun-free zones before Louisiana’s new permitless carry law went live July 4, they came up with their own solution, which is probably unconstitutional, definitely whacky, and certain to be contested in court.

The New Orleans Police Department has designated their Eighth District police station – which is located in the middle of the French Quarter – as a vocational technical school. In other words, they turned a working police station into a vo-tech. That makes everything within a 1,000-foot radius of the “school” is a gun-free zone, including more than five blocks of Bourbon Street, an international tourist destination.

It’s a felony in Louisiana to violate a gun-free zone, which is punishable by up to five years — at hard labor — in a state prison.

Who will actually be attending classes at this new “school” isn’t known. . . .

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill balked at the city’s move, warning officials they could face civil rights lawsuits because of their “made-up designation.”

“I’m working hard to help keep New Orleans safe, but the City cannot avoid state law by unilaterally designating police stations ‘vo-tech locations.’ You cannot just ‘designate’ yourself a vo-tech school. Among other implications, if it was one (it’s not) the police department would be under the jurisdiction of a board of supervisors for higher education, and it would be subject to other oversight requirements. I have no specific plans yet, but would caution the NOPD that it will likely be subject to civil rights lawsuits under Section 1983 of the Civil Rights Act if it arrests people pursuant to its made-up designation, which is clearly not legal or effective. I certainly hope the NOPD isn’t violating people’s rights by making up their own rules, which is why the Department is under a federal consent decree,” Murrill said in a statement posted on social media.

“Schools have classrooms, not booking rooms,” Murrill said in another post.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended Monday’s signing ceremony, reportedly between BYD’s CEO Wang Chuanfu and Turkey’s industry and technology minister Fatih Kacir. The $1 billion BYD factory investment reportedly has an annual capacity of 150,000 electric cars. It also includes a research and development center.

The new automobile factory continues BYD’s international expansion and boosts its presence in Europe, where it began selling EVs in 2021. It comes amid rising trade tensions between China and the West, which accuses the country of unfairly subsidizing its electric-car industry.

The new BYD plant, located in Manisa province, would allow it to avoid 40% tariffs in Turkey. It would also mark BYD’s second European factory. Its first plant for the continent, in Hungary, is under construction.

Further, Turkey has a customs trade deal with the European Union.

BYD is a real threat to European carmakers and, eventually, American manufacturers, too.

But Chinese carmakers weren’t a threat before Western governments began mandating and incentivizing the EV market into existence.

George Stephanopoulos apologized Tuesday evening after being caught on camera quipping to a passerby that he didn’t think President Joe Biden “can serve four more years.:”

The exchange was captured on video by TMZ, and the person lobbing a query about Biden’s fortitude appeared to be working for the outlet. The person approached Stephanopoulos as he was walking, in workout clothes, on the streets of New York City.

“Earlier today I responded to a question from a passerby. I shouldn’t have,” Stephanopoulos said in a statement that was shared previously with both Puck News and TMZ. “George expressed his own point of view and not the position of ABC News,” the Disney news unit said in a separate statement.

The media have moved in such lockstep during the 2008 election cycle to turn a junior senator from Illinois into The One, followed by their unending attacks on Trump, and then until recently, their efforts to prop up John Gill. To see them currently in disarray as Biden, Hunter, Jill, and the many other rival factions in Democratic Party decide the (p)resident’s future is loads of fun to watch. Enjoy it for now, because they will immediately return to uniformly printing The Approved Narrative again once they receive their orders from DNC HQ.
