BOMB CANADA — THE CASE FOR WAR: Canada’s Trudeau announces ban on handgun sales, transfers, saying ‘fewer guns means safer communities.’
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced a freeze on handgun sales and transfers.
The handgun freeze, which went into effect Friday, outlaws sales, purchases and other transfers of handguns between individuals. Additionally, no foreign handguns may be brought into the country from abroad.
Canadians have the right to feel safe in their homes, in their schools, and in their places of worship,” Trudeau said in a statement on the freeze. “With handgun violence increasing across Canada, it is our duty to take urgent action to remove these deadly weapons from our communities. Today, we’re keeping more guns out of our communities, and keeping our kids safe.”
The Prime Minister’s Office released a document explaining Trudeau’s thought process and the additional safety they hope to propagate via the handgun freeze.
“Fewer guns mean safer communities. That’s why the Government of Canada is implementing some of the strongest gun control measures in a generation,” the office boasts on its website.

UNEXPECTEDLY: Biden’s Diesel Fuel Supply Crisis Could Soon Cripple America in Ways Never Before Seen.
Diesel doesn’t get as much of the limelight as oil and gas, but it should because diesel fuel is the industrial lifeblood of the United States, and the price of diesel alone probably has a more significant impact on inflation and the prices you’re paying at the grocery store over any other factor. Without ample amounts of diesel, semi-trucks don’t move, farms are shut down, and critical manufacturing sectors are crippled.
As Bloomberg noted this week, “The US has just 25 days of diesel supply, the lowest since 2008, according to the Energy Information Administration. At the same time, the four-week rolling average of distillates supplied, a proxy for demand, rose to its highest seasonal level since 2007.”
The Biden administration has remained strangely silent, probably hoping that the dismal news doesn’t hit the mainstream because it’s a total political time-bomb waiting to go off, especially as the midterm elections are so close.

INSIDE THE SHAMEFUL CANCELLATION OF JIHAD REHAB:
The title was a big point of criticism. “Jihad Rehab” was what the center was called when [director Meg] Smaker first heard about it in Yemen, but coming from her, it might sound flip. “Jihad” means struggle in Arabic — including a spiritual struggle — and critics have said that the association with violence is racist and disrespectful. (Smaker’s own subjects freely use the word to mean waging war to defend fellow Muslims.) And to many critics, the word “rehab” reeked of a presumption of guilt for men who had never been charged with crimes, possibly because they were tortured at CIA dark sites and at Guantanamo. (After Sundance, Smaker added several text cards to ensure that viewers understood what one of the detainees said about his unlawful detention. She also changed the film title to “The UnRedacted.”)
In fact, Smaker’s film is nothing less than a nearly two-hour indictment of America’s deeply shameful experiment with unlawful imprisonment. She makes abundantly clear that the subjects were held without trial and subjected to torture sessions that included waterboarding, beatings, and, allegedly, sexual assault by a female guard while a detainee was pinned to the ground by male guards. “Americans torture — they never tire of it,” one of the men tells Smaker. She apparently earned the trust of these four men because they all speak freely and honestly about things that many people consider to be crimes. (One man went on to say that he did not think 9/11 was a big deal until he saw people jumping to their deaths at the World Trade Center; then he experienced a terrible shame.) The earnestness of their conversation, the way they seem to search for the right words, and their occasional laughter or tears suggest subjects who were completely at ease with Smaker and what she was documenting. A fifth subject who was clearly not comfortable with it dropped out halfway through.

More serious, however, was Abigail Disney’s reversal. The granddaughter of one of the founders of the Disney empire and a ubiquitous presence in the documentary world, Disney was a fierce advocate for the film — and a financial backer. After a screening session months before the Sundance announcement, Disney wrote Smaker, “This film is SOOOO good and SOOO gorgeously shot and SOOOO well edited that you must take in this one thing before you read on: WOW WOW WOW. You have made something great.”
After the film’s premiere in late January, Sundance posted a public letter apologizing for having “harmed” the filmmaking community, though it never specified what the harm was. Rave reviews started to pour in nevertheless, but in ways that just made things worse. Variety, IndieWire, and other industry stalwarts praised the film’s compassionate and intimate look at the lives of the former detainees, but rather than vindicate Smaker, the reviews seemed to prove that the entire industry was biased. A pressure campaign later forced several of these publications to change their stories to avoid using the word “terrorists.”
And it kept getting worse. A viewer must have taken photos of the end credits during the premiere, because one by one, people who had worked on the film were tracked down and accused of being Islamophobic. One person, who had done nothing but advise Smaker on how to get her hard drives through U.S. customs, was told that she would be publicly outed as Islamophobic if her name remained in the credits. Calls also went out to the composer, consultants, advisers, and even people in the special-thanks section of the credits. Shortly after, people started to ask that their names be removed. Finally, Disney buckled.
“First and foremost, I am truly sorry,” she posted in a public apology at the end of February. “A film I executive produced, Jihad Rehab, has landed like a truckload of hate on people whom I sincerely love and respect. I failed, failed, and absolutely failed to understand just how exhausted by and disgusted with the perpetual representation of Muslim men and women as terrorists or former terrorists or potential terrorists the Muslim people are.” (Contacted by email, Disney declined to comment.)

SAN DIEGO ER SEEING UP TO 37 MARIJUANA CASES A DAY — MOSTLY PSYCHOSIS:
Kyle’s now in recovery, but his is a story that is becoming familiar to more and more American families. Someone begins showing classic signs of hardcore drug addiction. Eventually, they suffer a full psychotic break. But the only drug history is for cannabis.
“We’re now counting 37 cannabis-related diagnoses a day,” Dr. Roneet Lev, an addiction medicine doctor at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, said about her emergency department. “It’s been steadily increasing over the years. When I started in the 1990s, there was no such thing. Now I see 1 to 2 cases per shift. The most common symptom is psychosis.”
“We probably see 20 THC-induced psychoses for every amphetamine-induced psychosis,” said Ben Cort, who runs a drug and alcohol treatment center in Colorado. One study showed an increase of 24% in cases of psychoses in emergency departments in Colorado in the five years following marijuana’s legalization in that state in 2012.
Since then, legal marijuana has been transformed into a potent and unrecognizable product.
“When I speak at parent nights at schools, most adults still think it’s like the weed we smoked when we were teens in the ’80s, [which had] between 3 to 5% THC per gram of flower,” said Laura Stack, an advocate against cannabis abuse in Colorado. “We never had today’s high-potency concentrates, vapes or edibles.”
Laura’s son Johnny was driven into acute psychosis by years of high concentrate THC usage. He believed his dorm room was bugged and that the mob was after him.

You might not know her name, but you’ve probably seen the video that made her famous. In 1973, actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather took the stage at the Oscars dressed in a beaded buckskin dress in place of Marlon Brando, after he was awarded Best Actor for his role as Vito Corleone in “The Godfather.” Claiming Apache heritage, she spoke eloquently, to a backdrop of boos, of the mistreatment of Native Americans by the film industry and beyond.
The blowback was swift and brutal.
Presenters ridiculed her during the broadcast. She told reporters that John Wayne had to be held back by six security guards to prevent him from rushing the stage and assaulting her. In taped interviews this year with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shortly before her death, Littlefeather said that going onstage that night led to her being blacklisted from the entertainment business.

The death of the “Apache activist and actress,” as she was described in her New York Times obituary earlier this month and in thousands of articles over the years, was mourned widely and uncritically.
In one of her final interviews, Littlefeather told The Chronicle that she took the stage at the Oscars because “I spoke my heart, not for me, myself, as an Indian woman but for we and us, for all Indian people … I had to speak the truth. Whether or not it was accepted, it had to be spoken on behalf of Native people.”
But Littlefeather didn’t tell the truth that night. That’s because, according to her biological sisters, Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi, Littlefeather isn’t Native at all.
“It’s a lie,” Orlandi told me in an exclusive interview. “My father was who he was. His family came from Mexico. And my dad was born in Oxnard.”
“It is a fraud,” Cruz agreed. “It’s disgusting to the heritage of the tribal people. And it’s just … insulting to my parents.”

Footage of China’s former leader, Hu Jintao, being asked to leave the stage at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing during the Communist Party Congress is drawing global attention as people try to work out what has just happened.
There are a lot of questions and no answers so far from the Chinese government.
Mr Hu, 79, appeared reluctant to move. If that is the case, why?
What did he say to the man who replaced him, Xi Jinping, which prompted a nod from China’s current leader? And what did he say to his protégé, Li Keqiang, as he tapped him on the shoulder before being ushered off stage?
The two most likely reasons for his departure are that it was either part of China’s power politics on full display, with a leader representing a former time being symbolically removed, or that Hu Jintao has serious health problems.
It came at the end of the Communist Party’s week-long congress, which cemented Mr Xi’s position as China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.
