DEMAND FOR RACISM IN AMERICA FAR EXCEEDS THE SUPPLY, DRAWING IN COUNTERFEIT GOODS: Police: Racial taunts against black/Hispanic HS football team never happened.

Claims of racial taunts against a mostly black and Hispanic Boston-area high school football team are bogus, police say.

Last fall, coaches from Roxbury Prep alleged they and their team were “targeted repeatedly” by spectators’ taunts from rival Georgetown High School.

But according to 60 pages of documents from Georgetown police, there is no evidence to support these claims, the Boston Globe reports. If anything, the police report notes the game’s referees said they were subjected to “angry shouts” by the Roxbury coaches regarding their “racially discriminatory” officiating.

Police interviewed over 30 people who attended the game and not one said they heard racial slurs. One Georgetown fan who’s active in Black Lives Matter activities said that if she had heard any slurs she “would have addressed it right away.”

Sigh.

HARVARD LAW LESS WOKE THAN YALE LAW: Can that possibly be true? Aaron Sibarium, writing in the Washington Free Beacon this morning, claims that to be the case. It’s an interesting and encouraging look that includes this observation regarding the presence at Harvard Law of actual conservative professors and administrators, and the utter absence of same at Yale Law:

“The contrast illustrates how a school’s seemingly apolitical properties can have profound effects on its political culture. Harvard is the largest law school in the country, with approximately 2,000 students, 10 percent of whom are members of the Federalist Society. That percentage is not unusual, but the absolute numbers are: Harvard’s Federalist Society chapter boasts 200 students—the size of Yale Law School’s graduating class.”

BORIS JOHNSON WILL FACE A CONFIDENCE VOTE TODAY.

Will he survive? He’s a wily guy, but he’s had some rough years. If he’s out, who’s in? The talent pool isn’t deep. My Brit friends who follow this hope for Penny Mordaunt if that happens, but we’ll see.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Will Squish Republicans Cave to Democrats on Guns? “Democrats are never satisfied once Republicans yield to them. They’ll just want more. Just look at what they’ve done with abortion. They reject any limitations whatsoever.”

SPACE: New Shepard completes fifth crewed suborbital flight. Ten years ago this would have been super-impressive. Now it’s very much in also-ran territory. Nonetheless, I’d like to see Blue Origin make progress. I don’t want all of our eggs in the SpaceX basket, excellent basket though it may be.

UNEXPECTEDLY: Washington state drivers don’t have to pull over for the cops anymore, so they aren’t. “Last July, a new law went into effect in Washington state that was described as ‘police reform.’ House Bill 1054 made significant changes in how the police are allowed to do their jobs. Police unions had been protesting the measure, saying that it would negatively impact their ability to control crime, but the state’s Democrats cheered the bill as a way to bring more ‘equity’ into the system. One of the changes put in place by the bill was a rule saying the police officers were no longer allowed to engage in high-speed chases except in very limited circumstances. In other words, if the cops see a driver doing something wrong and turn on their sirens and flashers but the motorist doesn’t pull over, there isn’t much they can do about it. To the great surprise of nobody with an IQ higher than tepid water, motorists have begun ignoring the police in increasing numbers and simply refusing to pull over.”

HIGHER EDUCATION TURNS INTO MCDONALD’S BUT WITHOUT THE QUALITY CONTROL: The Big Quit: Even Tenure-Line Professors Are Leaving Academe. ‘Why Would I Want To Improve Faculty Morale? I Want These People To Leave.’

Also, unlike academic administrators, McDonald’s managers are generally capable of doing every job in the place.

Anyway, if you’re tenured and miserable, you should make a hobby of making the lives of the administrators above you miserable. The university bureaucracy offers endless opportunities to do so. Spread the pain!

YEP:

EVEN THE NYT HAS NOTICED THAT DEFUNDING THE POLICE IS MOSTLY POPULAR WITH FRINGE WOKE WHITE PEOPLE: Democrats Face Pressure on Crime From a New Front: Their Base: Not long ago, the party was focused on police reform, but rising fears of violence, especially among communities of color, have led candidates to change course.

Alarming trends have changed the political conversation. In Baltimore, the city is on track to record more than 300 homicides for the eighth straight year, along with a rise in carjackings, robberies and other serious crimes. Concerns about police misconduct in the city have not evaporated seven years after the killing of Freddie Gray in police custody ignited protests and rioting, but persistent violent crime has pushed voters’ tolerance to the breaking point.

Those developments have transformed the Democratic Party’s discourse on matters of law and order, forcing the party to balance its determination to overhaul the criminal justice system with the imperative to protect its most loyal voters from a tide of violence. . . . “I think traditional politicians have just misread what the people in these disinvested communities want,” Mr. Vignarajah said. “They don’t want to unleash the police to do whatever they want, but they also don’t want you to tell criminals there are no consequences for their conduct.”

A study published in April by the Pew Research Center found that Black Americans were likeliest to name violence or crime as the top concern facing their communities, followed by economic issues and housing.

Shockingly, not trans rights or abortion or defunding the police.

“You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to make L.A. more livable,” Mr. Caruso said. “We’re going to have cleaner streets and better parks, and we’re going to have lower crime. And you’re going to be able to go for a walk and not worry about it.”

An idea so crazy it just might work! Plus:

Many complain about R.V.s parked for days or weeks on residential streets, people defecating in public parks, robberies in the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods.

“It’s just out of control,” Jay Sures, a Caruso supporter who is the co-president of United Talent Agency, said when talking about crime, citing a recent example of one of his employees getting held up at gunpoint near Universal Studios. “This homeless thing is also out of control,” he said. “We have to make it so our kids can go out in the streets. I think our city is in shambles right now.”

On a recent walk through Venice, a wealthy beach community and city neighborhood that has become a prime battleground over homelessness, Mr. Caruso, dressed in an impeccably tailored suit, listened as a resident, Marjorie Weitzman, lamented both the enduring presence of encampments and plans to develop more low-income housing in the area.

Ms. Weitzman said she considered herself “a reformed liberal.”

“There’s a lot of people like you,” Mr. Caruso said, nodding in agreement.

We can hope.

JOEL KOTKIN: America’s great cities are gripped by decline and disorder: Voters have had enough of ‘progressive’ leaders who are presiding over spiralling violence and crime. “For the past decade, America’s urban centres have been increasingly run by ‘progressive’ activists. Yet today, as US cities reel from collapsed economies, rising crime and pervasive corruption, there’s something of a revolt brewing, the success of which may well determine the role and trajectory of our great urban centres. . . . Even the denizens of left-leaning cities are rethinking progressivism. Last year, Austin – Texas’ blue capital – rescinded provisions, backed by progressives, that allowed vast homeless encampments to spring up across the city. Earlier this year, similarly left-leaning Seattle removed its ultra-progressive district attorney and Buffalo voters defeated a socialist-backed Democrat in favour of a moderate African American. Even in San Francisco, progressive school-board members were overwhelmingly defeated in February 2022 – an ominous development for Boudin’s chances next week. We could be seeing the beginning of a sea change in urban politics.”

Even a flatworm is smart enough to turn away from pain.
