THOSE WHO WERE UNWILLING TO DISPENSE COMPASSION NOW DEMAND IT:

But the “experts” need to be taught a lesson, lest they do more damage through their arrogance.

LOCKDOWN FALLOUT: ‘Shades of badness’ in math, reading scores. “The longer urban schools stayed closed the worse their fourth-graders are doing in math, concludes an analysis of National Assessment of Educational Progress NAEP) data.

There’s little evidence that keeping schools closed saved lives, writes Thompson. “Schools remained open in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy in late 2020 and early 2021,” because policy makers relied on “reports that schoolchildren did not play a major role in community transmission.” In addition, “evidence from Ireland, Singapore, Norway, Israel, South Korea, and North Carolina” showed that “young children were less likely than adults to get severely sick from COVID.”

There’s a media push to minimize the NAEP results. After all, writes David Wallace-Wells in the New York Times, what’s a few points after a worldwide pandemic? He worries Democratic politicians will be blamed for extending school closures.

Jay Caspian Kang, writing in The New Yorker, also wants parents to calm down and lower their expectations. Parents’ anxiety has been stoked by “the constant stream of stories about falling ACT and SAT scores, learning loss, and a generation of children who, absent some large-scale intervention, may fall well short of expectations.” But, don’t worry, because affluent, white students also did worse. And you wouldn’t want Democrats might get the blame, would you?

MALONEY HIT WITH NEW PERSONNEL SCANDAL: This is getting to be something of a regular occurrence with Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), who heads the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

The Washington Free Beacon’s Collin Anderson reports that Maloney provided a tax-funded staff job to a long-time friend of the New York representative’s husband:

“Maloney from September 2019 to July 2020 employed Hollywood journalist Kevin Sessums in his official office, according to House disbursement disclosures. On Facebook, Sessums has repeatedly boasted of knowing Maloney and his husband, Randy Florke, ‘for 30 years,’ and Sessums regularly refers to Florke as ‘an old friend.’

“It’s unclear exactly what Sessums did in Maloney’s office—the Democrat’s spending records merely list Sessums as a ‘staff’ member and offer no specific title—but Sessums almost certainly did not work for Maloney full time. That’s because he worked as editor-in-chief of his own entertainment magazine—sessumsMagazine.com—during his entire time in Maloney’s office, according to his LinkedIn, which does not mention his work for Maloney.”

WELCOME TO HOTEL CHINAFORNIA: Shanghai Disney shuts over Covid, visitors unable to leave. “The Shanghai government said on its official WeChat account the park was barring people from entering or exiting and that all visitors inside the site would need to await the results of their tests before they could leave.”

However many people around the world were still thinking of visiting Communist China, there must be fewer now.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: One Week Left for Desperate Democrats to Burn It All Down. “What this all means is that the Democrats are uneasy. And when they feel even the slightest bit of panic, they tend to act out. I doubt that they have any big November surprise waiting to be sprung on an unsuspecting electorate. They put all their chips in on abortion during the summer and the bet didn’t pay off.”

EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY, CHAIRMAN XI: Foxconn workers in China flee, Shanghai Disneyland closes. “Over the weekend, thousands of Foxconn workers in central China fled the facility following a COVID-19 outbreak. The workers said they feared being trapped in close working conditions with sick people and little food or medical treatment. Under China’s ‘Zero COVID’ policy, entire cities could be locked down, and residents forced to stay in their homes. Fearing a similar response, thousands of people at the Foxconn factory decided it was time to go.”

Many of our technocrats would adopt similar policies here if they could, even now.

TODAY IS ELECTION DAY IN ISRAEL: And the Israeli political system is among the most complicated in the world. Never fear, as The Lid’s Jeff Dunetz understands the Israeli process better than a lot of Israelis. He explains all here.

ARIZONA LIBERTARIAN MARC VICTOR drops out of Arizona Senate race. “I’m guessing he read the tea leaves…or realized what a disservice to the state he was doing.”

You don’t advance the cause of liberty by electing Democrats these days.

UPDATE: Huh, the link is good but there’s nothing there now. I guess Hot Air took it down for some reason. Here’s another story: Arizona Senate race: Libertarian candidate drops out, endorses Blake Masters.
