TIM RYAN SAYS AMERICANS NEED TO GIVE UP GAS CARS AS HE DRIVES AROUND OHIO IN GAS GUZZLERS:

Rep. Tim Ryan (D., Ohio) says the United States is ready to ban gas cars, arguing in 2019 that socialist Bernie Sanders’s plan to ban gas vehicles wasn’t ambitious enough. On the Senate campaign trail, Ryan is sticking to gas guzzlers.

Ryan’s first Senate campaign ad features him riding around with his son in a 2020 GMC Yukon, which gets roughly 14 to 15 miles per gallon around town. When leaving a campaign stop in Zanesville, Ohio, last month, Ryan boarded a 15-mile-per-gallon Chevrolet Tahoe.

Sometimes Ryan prefers his comparatively eco-friendly 2020 GMC Sierra, a truck, which gets around 23 miles per gallon. GMC does make an electric truck, the Hummer EV, which can get around 350 miles on a single battery charge, but it will set consumers back nearly $110,000.

“Tim loves his UAW-built American-made Tahoe,” Ryan campaign spokeswoman Izzi Levy told the Washington Free Beacon, “and wouldn’t trade it for anything—not even the $70,000 BMW that chauffeurs J.D. Vance around Ohio.”

The debate over how much the United States should embrace electric cars has been a flashpoint in Ohio’s Senate race, in which Ryan is facing off against Republican J.D. Vance. Although Ryan is a rubber stamp for President Joe Biden’s green agenda, which has poured hundreds of billions of dollars into renewable energy initiatives, he has remained mum on how much the federal government should be regulating what cars Americans drive.

“When Tim Ryan ran for president, he fully embraced banning gas-powered vehicles and said that Bernie Sanders’s climate change plan didn’t go far enough,” a spokesman for the Vance campaign told the Free Beacon. “Now that he is running for Senate in Ohio, he’s doing everything he can to run away from those radical, far-left positions. Simply put, Tim Ryan will say whatever it takes to get elected and then sell out working-class Ohioans at the first chance he gets.”

I’ll believe global warming is a crisis when the people who tell me it’s a crisis act like it’s a crisis themselves, to coin an Insta-phrase. In the meantime, I don’t want to hear another word about Glenn Reynolds’ carbon footprint.

TRUNALIMUNUMAPRZURE! Biden appears to ask if dead congresswoman is at White House speech: “Biden’s mistake came during his remarks at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. [Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN)], who was tragically killed in a car crash in August, was a core congressional ally in planning the conference alongside Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN). ‘I want to thank all of you here, including bipartisan elected officials like Rep. McGovern, Sen. Braun, Sen. Booker, Rep. — Jackie, are you here?’ the president said near the top of his remarks. ‘Where’s Jackie? I thought she was going to be here — to help make this a reality.’ In August, when news of Walorski’s passing first broke, Biden wrote in a statement that the accident left him and first lady Jill Biden ‘shocked and saddened.’”

FALLOUT: Putin’s Mobilization Hits Russia’s Economy in Its Weak Spots.

Vladimir Putin’s decision to call up 300,000 men to fight in his invasion of Ukraine is hitting two of the battered Russian economy’s weak spots.

The order takes about one in a hundred of the country’s active workers from their jobs to send to the front when record-low unemployment – combined with the exodus of Russians fleeing the country to avoid the mobilization – means there are few candidates to replace them. And it’s likely to batter Russians’ already-fragile finances, leaving some draftees’ families short of cash.

Plus: Hidden paragraph of Putin’s decree allows 1 million Russians to be mobilised.

EVERYTHING IS GOING SWIMMINGLY (EURO EDITION): You really don’t understand how bad it could get in Europe this year. “As bad as it is now, these might still be the good days for Europe. With winter and higher gas demand on the way, experts told Fortune that Europe’s energy market has never been more vulnerable. Even the slightest uptick in energy demand anywhere in the world could push entire sectors of Europe’s manufacturing industry to shut down entirely, devastating European economies with a wave of unemployment, high prices, and in all likelihood public unrest and divisions between European nations.”

TIM RYAN, MEET TIM RYAN: There is the Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who when he was running for president in 2019, criticized as not going far enough Sen. Bernie Sanders’ plan to outlaw fossil-fueled, internal combustion vehicles like those owned and driven by the vast majority of Americans.

Then, according to The Washington Free Beacon’s Joseph Simonson, there is the current Ohio Democratic senatorial candidate Tim Ryan: “Ryan’s first Senate campaign ad features him riding around with his son in a 2020 GMC Yukon, which gets roughly 14 to 15 miles per gallon around town. When leaving a campaign stop in Zanesville, Ohio, last month, Ryan boarded a 15-mile-per-gallon Chevrolet Tahoe.”

Ryan’s favorite vehicle, according to a campaign aide quoted by Simonson, is a GMC Sierra full-size pickup. That’s the petrol-burning GMC vehicle that gets around 23 mpg, not GMC’s $110,000 Hummer EV. But wait, Ryan’s GOP opponent, author J.D. Vance, rides around in a 7-Series Bimmer, so it’s all OK, right … right?

OH: China Brings Home 162 Nuclear Scientists (Read: Spies) From New Mexico. “As Russia threatens to use nukes against the U.S. ‘if the West attacks Russian territory,’ a disturbing story has come out in recent days detailing the recruitment of over a hundred Chinese scientists who had worked at the nuclear research lab at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico to bring whatever they may have learned back to China.”

RICH VEDDER ON THE HYPOCRISY OVER AMY WAX AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. A government with a clue would have coupled its illegal student loan jubilee with an illegal immediate ceiling on how much federal loan money students may borrow for school. If we can’t have rule of law (and it looks like we can’t), at least the eternal spiral in college costs and college wealth would come to an abrupt end.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: DeSantis Looks More Presidential Than Biden in Lead-Up to Hurricane. “It’s classless and unprofessional for the White House to ignore DeSantis during a time like this. Calling up the three mayors who are in harm’s way while ignoring DeSantis is just childish grade school posturing though (Can you tell him I’m ignoring him…). There’s a time and a place for everything, and the Biden administration always manages to hit the wrong note.”

WHEN NARRATIVES FAIL: NOAA official to Don Lemon: No, “climate change” is not responsible for Hurricane Ian. “Rather than pay attention and report, Lemon instead chose to stick to his agenda — as ignorant as it was. In CNN terms, Rohme wanted to talk about an apple, but Lemon just went bananas.”

Remember the narrative: Everything bad in America is caused by climate change, white supremacy, or Republicans — or, in a word, Republicans.

BIDENFLATION: FedEx Announces Biggest Ever General Rate Increase.

“Effective January 2, 2023, FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, and FedEx Home Delivery rates will increase by an average of 6.9 percent,” the company said in a news release on Sept. 22. The general rate increase of 6.9 percent is the largest annual hike in the company’s history, according to FreightWaves.

In addition, the firm will raise FedEx Freight rates “by an average of 6.9–7.9 percent dependent on the customer’s transportation rate scale.” This is the first time in eight years that FedEx has raised freight rates by more than 4.9 percent.

According to the company’s latest rate list, the cost of overnight delivery for a one-pound envelope by 8 a.m. the next day will rise by 4.4 percent, to $68.04. The cost of two-day delivery by 10:30 a.m. will be $25.37, an increase of 7.9 percent.

The rate-hike decision was announced as part of the company’s fiscal 2023 first-quarter earnings report. FedEx’s net income for the three months ended Aug. 31 was at $875 million, a decline of more than 20 percent from the $1.1 billion in net income earned during the year-ago period.

During the earnings call, CEO Raj Subramaniam blamed rising prices for the poor performance.

NO ELECTORAL DAMAGE FOR TRUMP FROM FBI MAR-A-LAGO RAID: If the Biden regime figured its FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate would hurt his 2024 electoral prospects, they appear to have figured wrong, according to the latest Issues & Insights/TIPP Survey.

That fingernail-on-a-blackboard scratching screech you hear is the gnashing of teeth in the Biden White House, Department of Justice, FBI Building and Mainstream Media newsrooms across the country.

JEFFREY CARTER: Milton Friedman Was Right Again.

If you saw Vladimir Putin’s speech last week, you saw a person that seemed a bit desperate. His incursion into Ukraine isn’t going well.

His reaction is a great lesson in how economics is more than just supply chains, goods and money. Economics is a part of being human too. It enters into how you make human decisions in your life. Friedman and especially Gary Becker pushed economic concepts into places they had never been before and we are seeing it acted out in real time today. . . .

From the Financial Times here are two stories of many in the article I linked above. You just feel for these people.

One doctor in the city of Makhachkala said some patients had asked her to provide them with medical exemptions so they could avoid the draft. “On the day they announced mobilisation, everyone started whispering in queues, shops and on the bus,” she said. “There was already news — everyone had heard that someone they knew got drafted. Of course, people are upset.” The doctor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said authorities had begun drafting medical workers, including nurses, in Dagestan, prompting some of her friends and relatives to flee to Kazakhstan. “We’re going to hide and run away. We won’t open the door, go to the draft office or take the notices. We’ve talked it all over,” she said.

Lev, a 27-year-old who lives in suburban Moscow, quit his job and left home after officials put his draft notice in his mailbox. He said he had decided to avoid his registration address but stay in the country, fearful that he would be caught at the border and handed a draft notice. “Putin’s ‘special military operation’ has just destroyed my life and any chances I had,” he said. “And now he literally wants to take my life away.”

I can’t say that I blame them.

Plus, how ending the draft made the military better.
