HELEN TRIES IT: Last night, I finally got the time to read Howard McEwen’s awesome book Daddy Issues: A Hard Man Novel (The Hard Man Series). His books take a look at men who have led tough lives and in this one, it was so refreshing to hear from a guy’s perspective how he felt about coming home to a dismissive wife and disrespectful teenage daughter. Everyone tells you men are the problem in our society these days but missing from that woke stereotype is the voice of men who have real feelings and real reasons to be upset.
The protagonist in the story is a guy named Wag who runs a successful car repair shop and he has numerous reasons to be unhappy. No one much cares though as the women in his life seem out of touch and distant. His mother leaves him when he is 12 and his wife and daughter are self-centered and out for themselves. The book should have been titled “Mommy issues” because Wag’s desperate need for loving looks from women leads him to do stupid and dangerous things. I will leave it at that but buy the book and the others in the series, they are worth staying up late for. (Bumped)

AT HELEN’S PAGE: Good reviews for the alpaca farm products:
Got a rug and it is fantastic! Soft, lovely natural fibers, nice neutral colors, a quirky handmade aesthetic – and the adorable alpaca on the back! I only wish they had bigger rugs as well. It feels great underfoot, it even provides quite a bit of cushion.
Ordered the Backpacka lightweight hiking socks, and had a chance to try them out this weekend. It was very warm for this time of year (low 80s), but even after a 10 mile hike my feet remained dry, even though there were stream crossings along the way.

NEW BOOKS AT HELEN’S PAGE: I have noticed many new books up at my page that look like fun. Here is one that looks interesting: Hamlet’s 2020 Vision: A recasting of Hamlet as the tragedy of the 2020 election and this one too: What Our Helmets Let Us See which is a short satire about politics. I like the creativity of the authors at Helen’s Page. Go support them. (Bumped)

HELEN TRIES IT: My neck often hurts when I drive so I decided my product to try for you today from Helen’s Page is Russ Mitchell’s book Driving With Ease. Mitchell uses the Feldenkrais Method to help drivers use gentle movements and techniques to drive longer distances without getting as fatigued and emotionally drained when they go on long trips. He starts his chapters with exercises for you to do on the floor and then moves into using them in the car. I tried a few of the exercises he suggested in the first few chapters and while I felt kind of ridiculous lying on the floor, they were kind of calming and nice. The rest of the book focuses on using your pedals and arm positions in the car to cause the least strain. I hope to continue learning more and to work up to driving longer distances which I have been reluctant to do because I find it tedious.
If you want to take a look at the book, it can be found for free on kindle unlimited or you can order it directly from the author. He describes himself as a “recovering academic” so let’s all support him in his recovery. (Bumped)

HELEN’S PAGE REQUEST: Are there any shaving companies out there that would like to advertise on Helen’s Page? It would be nice for men to have an alternative company to buy products from, other than Gillette that disrespects men.
HELEN TRIES IT: So I thought I would start trying out some of the products that are being listed on Helen’s Page in order to let readers know if they are good or not. Tested products get a verification badge.
First up is King Harv’s Imperial Coffees. I ordered the Organic Colombia which is one of their sale brands. You can get it ground anyway you want from regular to k-cup grind. I ordered the k-cup grind and received it 4 days later by USPS. King Harv was kind enough to add a half pound of their pricier blend of Panama Geisha coffee which King Harv told me “is called ‘Geisha’ because although grown in Panama, the genetic source of the coffee trees is from Gesha valley, Ethiopia.”
Both coffees arrived in nice vacuum sealed bags and we made them in in our Keurig maker using the adjustable k-cup thingy. Glenn tried the Geisha blend and pronounced it to be “smooth, bright, and not too acidic, and reminiscent of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee” which he loves. I tried the Columbia blend and it was very classic, with a strong bold taste, yet very smooth. Both were excellent but if you are on a budget, the Columbia is a better bet. If you want to splurge, the Geisha is worth it. Since I tried it, I gave King Harv’s a verification badge. You can read more about the brand at Helen’s Page. (Bumped).
