SLOUCHING TOWARD WWIII: China struggling with military reforms needed in time for Taiwan action.
The People’s Liberation Army failed to implement key military reforms needed to meet the goal of having enough firepower to take Taiwan by force in 2027, according to an Air Force think tank report.
The report quotes People’s Liberation Army Gen. Zhang Youxia, the most powerful military officer in China, as voicing concerns that the military has not moved fast enough to be ready for an invasion or blockade of Taiwan, as Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered.
Details of the shortcomings were disclosed by Gen. Zhang in a state-media essay last year. The article revealed weaknesses in military leadership, problems with wartime military-civilian coordination, and an inability to conduct both joint operations and information warfare operations needed for a major joint military campaign.
“After nine years of corruption purges, modernization initiatives, and substantial reforms, Xi and China’s military leaders remain concerned,” the report by the China Aerospace Studies Institute states.
“Significant portions of the People’s Liberation Army and cross-military and local (civilian) efforts are not moving fast enough, or in the right direction.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a speech on May 31 that a conflict with China over Taiwan is a real danger that is “imminent” and would result in devastating consequences.
One thing to remember is that Xi’s anti-corruption purges were more about giving cover to removing threats to Xi than they were about reducing corruption.
Another thing to remember is that dictators tend to believe the lies told by their underlings about how well things are going, particularly in the military.

MY STATE’S CALIFORNICATION CONTINUES APACE: Gov. Polis signs expanded protections for illegal immigrants in Colorado.
Despite repeated claims that Colorado is not a “sanctuary state” for illegal immigration, Gov. Jared Polis on May 23 signed a bill into law that both reinforces and expands Colorado’s existing protections for immigrants living in the country illegally.
Senate Bill 25-276, Protect Civil Rights Immigration Status was a top priority for majority Democrats in the state Legislature as they continue their attempt at isolating Colorado from the Trump administrations deportation policies, with the bill picking up a remarkable 46 prime and co-sponsors on its way to passage.
Colorado state law already limits interaction and information sharing between local and federal officers. However, SB 276 extends this measure to prohibit the state judicial and legislative branches, along with local governments, from sharing personal immigration-related data with federal officials. The bill also denies federal immigration officials access to certain areas of places such as childcare facilities, hospitals, and schools, unless a warrant is provided.
Local governments cannot work with ICE to detain an individual facing civil immigration proceedings, and any information on an enrolled child or a patient cannot be shared with federal officers, among other restrictions.
Despite the bills extensive restrictions for local and state officials, Gov. Polis reiterates the importance of cooperation with federal agents on criminal matters in his signing statement for the bill.
Well, Polis lied.
KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: None of This Is Playing Out the Way Gavin Newsom Thinks It Is. “The reason that Newsom wasn’t going to be the nominee last year is the same one that is making him fight so hard to be the Dems’ whacko Great White Hope during the riots now: he doesn’t check off any diversity boxes for the party that’s all in on it. Unless he’s ready to switch teams and shack up with Mayor Pete, Newsom needs some way to distinguish himself.”
RESCUED FROM THE MEMORY HOLE — BIDEN ON “SANCTUARY CITIES.”
2007. Biden is asked if he were President, would he allow sanctuary cities to exist. His answer was NO. He said that sanctuary cities turn into dumps and the only reason they exist is because the Federal government doesn't enforce the law. pic.twitter.com/ACfuhKHFqs

HMM: Former White House Physician Ronny Jackson Points To White House Staffer In Biden Cover-Up Probe.
Former White House physician and current Republican Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson told the Daily Caller in a Monday interview that ongoing congressional investigations are overlooking a key White House staffer.
“I think they’ve got a pretty good list to start with, but I think one of the people, you know, having been in the White House for a while that I think would be absolutely key in what what was going on, they need to look [at] the staff secretary,” Jackson responded when asked who else he would like to see testify before Congress regarding the probes into the Biden mental decline cover-up and the use of the autopen. “The staff secretary handles every piece of paper that goes in and out of the Oval Office and everything that has the president’s signature on it.”
Jackson added that he was “kind of shocked” when he saw “the initial list from Chairman Comer that the staff secretary was not on there.”
Comer is hardly squishy, so hopefully he’ll correct this oversight.
