KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: Rocket Week in America Was Pretty Cool and a Welcome Distraction. “Honestly, I could kill hours watching this hulking rocket take off over and over. I was born and grew up during the Space Race, and my sense of wonder when any rocket leaves the launchpad hasn’t diminished one iota. Heck, I still hit YouTube to re-watch shuttle launches. Seeing the most powerful rocket ever to fly blast off is kid in a candy store stuff for me.”

THAT’S ANOTHER 50,000 STATE JOBS: Argentina’s Milei To Cut 50,000 State Jobs Amid Legislative Challenges.
This latest round of cuts follows a March announcement in which Milei proposed slashing 70,000 jobs from Argentina’s public sector work force, which employs approximately 3.5 million people. According to Infobae, 25,000 positions have been cut since March’s announcement.
As a result, public employees rejected the measure and some of the largest unions in the country have called for protests. “We knew that the program was going to generate social tension. Bringing the number of ministries to half was not free,” the president said during his speech at the Latam Economic Forum in Buenos Aires.
Since taking office six months ago, Milei has pledged to fix Argentina’s severe economic issues, including an inflation rate that has surged to a three-decade high of over 250 percent and a poverty rate impacting 57 percent of the population. To end the crisis, Milei has slashed state subsidies, devalued the currency, and closed several state agencies.
But: “Milei’s reform efforts have faced resistance within both chambers of Argentina’s legislature, where his party only holds a minority of support.”

DO THE LETTERS “F O” MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU? Admiral McRaven to American people: “You need to shut up (except for me, of course).”
“McRaven claims that those who criticize government institutions “undermine America.” “Undermining America” is a serious charge. And when it comes from a four-star admiral who commanded the entire United States Special Operations Command, you can bet that it carries some clout among those who are wielding power. For these reasons, McRaven’s comments merit close scrutiny.”
Our entire ruling class has been peddling variations on this for the past 5 years or so, at the same time they were gleefully screwing up — dare I say undermining? — America in so many ways. They should be begging for forgiveness, or maybe a pardon, rather than issuing arrogant diktats.
Plus, from John Lucas: “There are countries that do not tolerate speech critical of the government and its institutions. There are countries where citizens who publicly disagree with the actions of the government and its institutions are condemned as disloyal citizens, investigated and tried. There are countries where people with political views that differ from those of the governing authorities are subject to governmental abuse and ruin just because of their political opinions. We have a name for these countries. They are totalitarian.”

DISPATCHES FROM THE BLUE ZONES: Repaving crew abandons Oakland neighborhood citing safety concerns.
The situation has left Sobrante Park residents with their street torn up and reduced to gravel with gaping potholes. Resident Shari Angarano said the unfinished road work made bumpy driving conditions on Colorados Drive go from bad to worse.
“The ground is uneven and a lot of the gravel used to fill pot holes is being kicked up,” Angarano said.
The unfortunate situation began in March, when Sobrante Park residents received letters stating Colorados Drive would be repaved.
“They put signs up, did some work,” Angarano told KRON4. The street was prepped by crews for paving. “The signage on the street barriers indicated that the crew would be back on 5/15-5/16 to complete the work,” she said.
But workers abruptly left midway through the project — and never returned.
Gooder and harder, Oakland.
MOST HILL DEM AIDES NOT PROUD TO BE AMERICANS? It’s an informal survey with self-selecting respondents to boot, but the results of a recent CNCT survey are nevertheless startling.
Among GOP congressional staffers, 89 percent said they are proud to be Americans. The percentage dropped by half of the GOP figure among the Democratic aides, at 45 percent. There are marked divisions on gender and age, too.

Study Finds Potential Downside to Vigorous Exercise We Didn’t Know About. “Bad news for any extreme exercise junkies out there: excessive vigorous exercise could muffle your immune system. HMM: Emerging Threat: New RNA Virus Found in Human Neurons. “The virus is associated with severe inflammation in humans infected with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, leading the team to hypothesize that it exacerbates toxoplasmosis disease.”
Related: Toxoplasmosis: “Crazy Cat Lady” Just Took On A Whole New Meaning.
Even in individuals without an immune disorder, it seems the parasite may cause slower reaction time in people, as well. The parasite increases the likelihood that the infected person will be in a car accident, just like it makes a rodent more likely to be killed by a predator. There are also studies linking the disease to schizophrenia and other mood disorders, due to an increase in the neurotransmitter, dopamine, that takes place in the brain following infection as well. Because high dopamine levels and schizophrenia have a close association, there is speculation that people infected with Toxoplasmosis could be up to 25% more at risk for the symptoms of schizophrenia. Further, this storm of neurotransmitter production can also increase the risk of suicide.
So, the “crazy cat lady” stereotype might have some basis in medicine. These changes to the brain are nothing to ignore, and we certainly need even more research to understand the long-term implications of T. Gondii on our mental health. After all, this is a very common infection that a huge portion of the world’s population carries around; about 60 million people in the U.S. alone.
