WHY ARE OPERATING ROOMS SO COLD? IT’S NOT WHAT YOU THOUGHT. “You may have thought that operating rooms are kept cold to prevent infection. I’m here to tell you that not only is that wrong, but cold temperatures are actually associated with an increased rate of surgical site infections. The real reason operating rooms are kept cold is actually just to keep the surgeons and nurses comfortable, seriously. But in addition to just being annoying for anesthesiologists, the cold temperature can actually have really serious implications for our patient safety.”

I do want the hands that are carving into my body to be cool, not sweaty. But yeah, being chilly seems to go with most medical procedures. However, last time I was in for a colonoscopy at UT Hospital, I noticed that they seemed extra-careful to make sure that I was warm before, during, and after the procedure.

DON LEMON [VIP]: Why Won’t CNN Fire This Underperforming, Overpaid Jerk? “$11,280,000 for fewer than 300,000 viewers, assuming mostly the same people tune in each day, is $38 per viewer, annually. You think Nutrisystem or whoever is getting $38 worth out of the typical Don Lemon fan?”

A GAME-CHANGER FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES IF THIS PANS OUT: Apple hits ‘major milestones’ in moonshot to bring noninvasive blood glucose monitoring to Apple Watch. “Apple is taking a different approach, using a chip technology known as silicon photonics and a measurement process called optical absorption spectroscopy. The system uses lasers to emit specific wavelengths of light into an area below the skin where there is interstitial fluid — substances that leak out of capillaries — that can be absorbed by glucose. The light is then reflected back to the sensor in a way that indicates the concentration of glucose. An algorithm then determines a person’s blood glucose level.”

THIS IS SETTING THE BAR AWFULLY LOW IN 2023: How Trump Upstaged the Biden Administration.

“I sincerely hope that when your representatives and all of the politicians get here, including Biden, they get back from touring Ukraine, that he’s got some money left over,” Trump told local residents.

“Unfortunately, as you know, in too many cases your goodness and perseverance were met with indifference and betrayal in some cases,” he continued. “And Biden and FEMA said they would not send aid to East Palestine under any circumstance […] When I announced that I was coming, they changed their tune. It was an amazing phenomenon.”

“They were intending to do absolutely nothing for you,” he added. “They could have been here two weeks earlier, at least a week earlier, but they decided to do it this way, and I guess it came from the top.”

A day earlier, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg alluded to Trump’s planned visit to East Palestine in an interview on Good Morning America. “There are two kinds of people who show up when you have that kind of disaster experience,” he said. “People who are there because they have a specific job to do and are there to get something done*, and people who are there to look good and have their picture taken. When I go, it will be about action,” he said. He also told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that he would be going to East Palestine but that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) needed to be able to do its job first.

DISPATCHES FROM THE BLUE ZONES: Ukrainian refugee girl flees unsafe San Francisco school. “Teachers nationwide say student violence has more than doubled since schools reopened, according to a recent survey. ‘Eighty-four percent of teachers believe current students lack the ability to self-regulate and build relationships compared to peers prior to the pandemic.'”

THINK TWICE ABOUT INVESTING IN EVS: Sooner or later, President Joe Biden and the enviros throughout the bureaucracy, media, academic, woke corporations and advocacy communities will have to face the reality that Electric Vehicles are NOT the future of American transportation.

My latest PJ Media column lays out three huge reasons why EVs will never dominate American roads. One of the three is actually from a study by an environmental advocacy group that thinks the conversion to EVs in America should result in all-but disappearing private transportation.

Maybe that’s been their goal all along???

Forget Buttigieg’s late timing and Biden’s continuing absence, which are bad enough. The difference in optics between Trump’s visit and Buttigieg’s will be the real story.

ALLISON SCHRAGER: How to Hedge Life. Often criticized, risk-management tools remain the best defense from panic, superstition, and bad public policy.  They could have helped us avoid the disastrous response to Covid — if only our leaders knew how how to use these tools as well as bail bondsmen do.
