ANN ALTHOUSE ON THE DISINFORMATION OFFICE’S FAILURE: Ha ha ha. “Let right-wing attacks derail” — that’s rich. The idea was so bad, they couldn’t defend it. Let derail. Ha. Like it was a train, locomoting powerfully down the track…. No, it wasn’t. It never had any traction. It went kablooey only because everyone didn’t lay down and let it go by entirely unimpeded.

Plus: “I think they didn’t fight because they saw they’d only be digging a bigger hole for themselves. It is ironic, but that makes it funny. And it’s a great thing to be in a position to laugh at what happened.”

Plus from the comments: “My God. It’s impossible to measure just how far WaPo has fallen. But let Taylor Lorenz try to measure it out for us- column by column. A big assist to the Idiots in the White House. Never have so many spent so much time putting their heads together and still coming up short of one full brain. The entire act is beyond embarrassing. They’re dangerous to the nation. “

AND YET STILL SPEAKING MORE COHERENTLY THAN BIDEN:

UNDERSTANDING DISPARATE IMPACT THEORY:  It’s important for all of us to understand what a giant morass the Supreme Court pulled us into when it decided (quite wrongly) in Griggs v. Duke Power Co. (1971) that Title VII outlawed disparate impact.  Since then, the concept of liability for “disparate impact” has spread to other areas of the law (and to our way of thinking about race and sex issues).  Paul Taylor has done seven-part series on the subject on Substack:

Paul Taylor:  Disparate Impact Part 1.

Paul Taylor:  Disparate Impact Part 2.

Paul Taylor:  Disparate Impact Part 3.

Paul Taylor:  Disparate Impact Part 4.

Paul Taylor:  Disparate Impact Part 5.

Paul Taylor:  Disparate Impact Part 6.

Paul Taylor:  Disparate Impact Part 7.

It’s definitely worth taking a look.

FREE SPEECH 2022 CONFERENCE:  Monday! Monday! Monday!  Pepperdine School of Public Policy in beautiful Malibu is sponsoring a half-day conference on free speech.  Robby George will be the keynote speaker, and yours truly will be there to moderate a panel on free speech (or lack thereof) in academia.  If you can make it, we’d love to have you there.  Register here.  (Note that you can also register to receive a video, but the video will not be available until a week after the conference.)

HMM: “Defense attorneys seek to identify and investigate 80 suspicious actors and material witnesses, some of whom allegedly ran an entrapment operation against the Oath Keepers on January 6, 2021, and committed crimes including the removal of security fencing, breaching police lines, attacking officers, and inciting crowds to storm into the Capitol. In a motion (pdf) and supplement filed after 11 p.m. on May 5 in federal court in Washington, attorney Brad Geyer listed 80 people, some of whom he said could be government agents or provocateurs. The people are seen on video operating in a coordinated fashion across the Capitol grounds on January 6, the attorney alleged. Geyer’s suggestion of an entrapment scheme will resonate with dozens of January 6 defense attorneys, coming shortly after two men were acquitted of an alleged plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D). There was a hung jury on charges against two other defendants. The jury in that case was allowed to consider FBI entrapment as a defense.”

UPDATE: Via a friend:

MAYBE THERE IS A MULTIVERSE! You know, the theory that there are an infinite number of universes and we just happen to live in the one that is habitable for humans. Well, what if two multiverses get mixed up in some manner and share a little space, matter and time?

For one thing, that might explain how His Fraudulency can be so totally out of touch with economic reality. He’s physically in our universe but he’s actually in and seeing a different one, one that is prosperous and growing.

Just how out of touch Biden is was demonstrated most vividly in the latest Issues & Insights/TIPP Economic Optimism Index, which plunged 9.5 percent last week.

“In his remarks last week, Biden said ‘when you look at the economy today, it’s clear that we’ve made enormous strides.’ He’s right about that. Unfortunately, those enormous strides have all been in the wrong direction,” observes the crew at Issues & Insights. BTW, have you bookmarked I&I yet?

OF COURSE:

UKRAINE: Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, May 18.

Russian occupation authorities announced plans to destroy the Azovstal Steel Plant and turn Mariupol into a resort city, depriving Russia of some of the most important economic benefits it hoped to reap by taking the city in the first place. Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) Denis Pushilin stated that DNR authorities are planning to level Azovstal after completing its capture.[1] Azovstal was a major element of Mariupol’s economy before the war because of its unique function as a full-cycle metallurgical complex, the 10,000 jobs associated with production at the plant, the billions of dollars of foreign exchange earnings and taxes it generated, and its production output of 7,000 tons of steel, 6 million tons of iron, and 4.5 million tons of rolled metal, according to the Mariupol City Council.[2] Pushilin stated that the DNR intends to rebuild Mariupol to be a “resort city,” while admitting that 60% of the structures in Mariupol have been destroyed to the point where they cannot be rebuilt.[3] The announced plan to turn Mariupol into a center of tourism and leisure following the complete destruction of a major center of economic activity in Mariupol, is indicative of the damage that Russian troops have inflicted on themselves through the destruction of Mariupol. Russia does not need another resort town on the Black Sea. It does need the kind of hard currency that a plant like Azovstal had generated.

Russia — assuming they keep Mariupol — also can’t afford to let Azovstal stand as an unofficial monument to resistance to Russian aggression.

DHS CONCEDES PRO-ABORTIONISTS MIGHT GET VIOLENT: The Washington Free Beacon obtained a copy of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) internal memo to law enforcement agencies regarding the potential for violence by pro-abortion radicals.

Besides the concession about the reality of pro-abortionists actively discussing things like “dead [pro-life] activists at Justices’ houses,” the memo contains some interesting insights into the culture of these nutcases. Example: “Boog” is short for “boogaloo,” their term for such activities.

BIDEN NOMINATES PARTISANS FOR NON-PARTISAN JOBS: Washington Free Beacon’s Kevin Daley looks at two of His Fraudulency’s nominees for the U.S. Sentencing Commission. The commission is officially supposed to be non-partisan. Somebody should tell Biden.
