There’s no doubt that housing prices play a factor. Thomas Sowell has written that they’re part of the Bay Area’s built-in “Housing Price of Liberalism.” As Sowell writes, “Much as many liberals like to put guilt trips on other people, they seldom seek out, much less acknowledge and take responsibility for, the bad consequences of their own actions.”

But another contributing factor is the poisonous spread of identity politics on the left beginning in the mid-1970s, a topic explored by the left-leaning professor Mark Lilla in his 2017 book, The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics. Identity politics have caused a radical transformation from the color-blind Great Society of the LBJ/MLK years, to a disastrous self-segregation made up of hyphens and boxes.

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: French feminist attacks AOC’s ‘bin raccoon’ boyfriend.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was probably expecting some criticism after her new documentary “Knock Down the House” was released on Netflix this month, but she likely did not expect it for the way her boyfriend looks.

A French feminist writer, Marie Le Conte, attacked Riley Roberts’ appearance on Twitter Friday, causing some outrage and a series of jokes.

“Apologies for the blatantly mean tweet but THIS is what AOC’s boyfriend looks like? incredible scenes, truly representing all the ambitious and stunning millenial women shackled to boyfriends who look like bin raccoons out there,” Conte said.

Classy stuff.

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: Petition Demands Brie Larson be Replaced With Gay Woman of Color In “Captain Marvel.”

The star of “Captain Marvel,” Brie Larson, is an actress who has waved the social justice flag in the faces of everyone she could, saying all the necessary things and accomplishing all the necessary tasks to make sure it’s understood that she is the warrior’s warrior. A “captain” if you will.

Larson made it clear throughout the promotion of Captain Marvel that she wanted more people of color to review her films, not white men. She made it clear that she doesn’t care what old white men thought of films because some films weren’t for them. She promoted the idea of more gay superheroes and said the social justice takeover of the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to happen faster.

And it didn’t save her. The monster has now come to eat her too.

Each revolution eventually devours its own.

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: High School Mulls Removing George Washington Murals Because They ‘Traumatize’ Students.

A high school in Northern California — George Washington High School, to be specific — is mulling over a push to remove two 83-year-old murals from its hallways. Critics advocating for their removal say they are offensive to Native Americans and African-Americans. They say the pair of panels “traumatizes students and community members.”

Here’s the irony, though. The murals were painted in 1936 by artist Victor Arnautoff, who was a protégé of Diego Rivera and a communist. “He included those images not to glorify Washington, but rather to provoke a nuanced evaluation of his legacy. The scene with the dead Native American, for instance, calls attention to the price of ‘manifest destiny.’ Arnautoff’s murals also portray the slaves with humanity and the several live Indians as vigorous and manly,” The Wall Street Journal reports.

Stalin smiles (and so does Mao).

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY: Cancel Culture Comes for Counterculture Comics. Today it’s creators, not cops, who want to banish R. Crumb, onetime king of the comics underground:

The American culture that R. Crumb and his contemporaries grew up in restricted the ways people could talk about sex, violence, race, and class. The first wave of underground comix artists reacted with metaphorical explosive violence, especially once they realized nothing was stopping them but the constraints of their own minds. That freedom, in all its messiness and ugliness, upset and unnerved and offended many. It also inspired massive amounts of interesting, strange, life-enhancing art, not just in the comics world but in such offshoots of Crumb’s aesthetic as National Lampoon, Saturday Night Live, and The Simpsons.

The attitudes Crumb satirized were real and, he thought, deserving of ridicule via crazed exaggeration. His feelings of hostility toward women are, as he has insisted in his comics and in interviews, true to him (and, he is certain, to many other men). What is to be gained by pretending they’re not? Crumb was honest about being the sort of resentful nebbish who in his pre-fame days saw women as controlling something he desperately wanted and couldn’t have—what would now be called a corrosive “incel” mentality, after the men who self-identify as involuntarily celibate.

In a 1991 interview with The Comics Journal, Crumb said art should be judged not on ideological purity but on whether it is “interesting or boring…honest and truthful and real…saying what’s really on [the artists’] minds.…If it’s really in there it ought to come out on paper.” At the same time, he reflected, “I don’t know, maybe we’re all just dragging society down. Maybe we should all be locked up.”

The paradox of liberal tolerance remains: Neither the transgressors nor the offended have a right to force the other side to just shut up about what its members think, feel, or imagine. The two are intimately linked in a mutually frustrating tango. The offended want certain expressions to go away or be universally recognized as unacceptable, and the transgressors want a social space to express themselves without feeling driven from society.

Read the whole thing. I’m so old, I can remember when the left celebrated the 1970s for all of its radical changes to society. Eventually though, all of its pop culture will be airbrushed out of existence, as left’s overculture goes full-on Mao.

ANNALS OF LEFTIST AUTOPHAGY. Rep. Rashida Tlaib makes stunning accusation about Democratic Party leadership:

Amid controversy between President Donald Trump and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) — stemming from the president criticizing remarks Omar made recently when she refused to denounce the 9/11 attackers as terrorists — Tlaib launched a broadside at her party’s leadership.

The Michigan lawmaker is seemingly upset over what she believes is a failure by Democratic leadership to properly condemn Omar’s critics.

“They put us in photos when they want to show our party is diverse. However, when we ask to be at the table, or speak up about issues that impact who we are, what we fight for & why we ran in the first place, we are ignored,” Tlaib charged. “To truly honor our diversity is to never silence us.”

As Stephen Miller tweets in response, “You mean Democrats are just using people of color and ethnic minorities as props? GTFO!”
