FORMER BLACKFIVE MILBLOGGER “LAUGHING WOLF” CONTINUES HIS RECOVERY: Alive Day. “My military friends will know what that means, but potentially countless others will not. It is the day you died, or should have died. The day something catastrophic impacted you and perhaps those around you. In some cases, people I know quite literally died and the docs and doctors brought them back. Some more than once. In other cases, the docs and doctors poured forth their skills and power like water, and kept them alive. Even spending time in Iraq and elsewhere, I never truly thought that I would have an alive day.”

IT’S COMPLICATED: The One China Policy Is A Lie.

Seeking to both assuage China and to clarify confusion left by President Joe Biden’s off-the-cuff remarks about Taiwan, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan earlier this month reiterated America’s “One China” policy while speaking at a Washington think tank. He should not have.

Put aside the unseemliness of unelected, unconfirmed staffers correcting a sitting president – an action that only reinforces the notion among foreigners that Biden is senile and not in control of his own administration. The reality is that the One China notion was born from the ambition of Mao Zedong, chairman of China’s Communist Party, and Henry Kissinger, who as national security advisor helped broker détente with Beijing.

Four years before Sullivan was born, President Richard Nixon acquiesced to the One China idea in the Shanghai Communique. But Nixon’s agreement was never as clear as Beijing claims. Rather than unequivocally endorse Mao’s statement that “the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government of China; Taiwan is a province of China,” Nixon said the “United States Government does not challenge that position” but instead “reaffirms its interest in a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question by the Chinese themselves.”

Don’t believe anything the CCP claims, or their mouthpieces in the United States government.

UKRAINE WAR: What Really Happened on Snake Island? “Were Russian troops forced into a humiliating retreat from Snake Island, or did Moscow order a withdrawal from the strategic island as a ‘goodwill’ gesture to promote grain exports?”

SHOT: Biden administration drilling plan may exclude all waters beyond Gulf of Mexico.

Chaser: Biden will visit Saudi Arabia to ask for an increase in oil production.

Hangover: OPEC+ oil boost likely not much help to high gasoline prices. “The OPEC oil cartel and allied producing nations decided Thursday to boost production of crude by an amount that will likely do little to relieve high gasoline prices at the pump and energy-fueled inflation plaguing the global economy.”

HMM: Ukraine drives Russian forces from Snake Island, a setback for Moscow.

Russian troops have withdrawn from Snake Island in the Black Sea after repeated assaults by Ukrainian forces, a move that is a setback for Moscow’s forces and possibly undermines their control over vital shipping lanes.

The retreat came after sustained Ukrainian attacks — including with powerful, newly arrived Western weapons — made it impossible for Russian forces to hold the island, a small speck of land 20 miles off the coast of Odesa that has played an outsized role throughout the war.

Coming only a week after the Kremlin bragged about repelling a Ukrainian attempt to retake the island, the Russian withdrawal appeared to be another instance of Moscow’s scaling down its military ambitions in the face of Ukrainian resistance.

Unlike Ukraine’s advances around Kyiv and Kharkiv, I believe this is the first time they’ve taken back land that Moscow had chosen to seriously defend.

Update: Moscow says the retreat is a “goodwill” measure to free up grain exports. “On June 30, as a step of goodwill, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation completed their tasks on the Snake Island and withdrew from the garrison stationed there.”

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: No, Really—Why Is Anthony Fauci Still Talking? “The lunacy of Fauci doubling down on a treatment that seemed to have a negative effect on him would seem odd had we not been subjected to two-and-a-half years of him belching hypocrisy like Mt. Vesuvius spewing lava on Pompeii in 79 AD.”
