OHIO NATIVE PAULA BOLYARD: Who Might Replace JD Vance in the Senate?

UPDATE (FROM GLENN): For a second, I read this as promoting “Ohio native Paula Bollard” as Vance’s replacement. Hey, we could do worse! And might.

COLORADO: A sentence in a new state law has scrambled the plumbing industry.

Colorado’s plumbing regulatory board held an emergency meeting Wednesday to try to figure out a solution that some in the industry say could lead to water shutoffs and pricey bills for a standard procedure.

The new law requires anyone inspecting, testing or repairing a backflow prevention device to have a license. Previously, professionals only needed a plumbing license to install or remove a backflow prevention device.

A backflow prevention device prevents used water from entering the public water supply. They are common on residential sprinkler systems, but the prevention devices are also common on commercial buildings where they serve multiple purposes. Some water districts require commercial buildings to test their backflow preventers frequently.

The change caught many in the backflow prevention industry off guard. Colleen Morrison with Morrison Backflow Testing said she learned about the new law, which went into effect on July 1, on June 14. She said she called her contacts at Denver Water who said they had not heard about the change either.

“If we test the domestic backflows, we’re breaking the law,” Morrison said.
She said the change in the law eliminates 44% of her business, puts her employees at risk and puts the public at risk if bad water enters the water supply.
It also will increase costs to her customers who have to find help in a limited pool of licensed plumbers who can do the work elsewhere.

If the Denver-Boulder Democrats who took over my state could just take a breather on legislating everything worse, that would be great.

TO BE FAIR, MAYBE THEY WERE WEARING HEELS:

This is the kind of BS excuse that passes for taking responsibility in a DEI culture.

Lots of foul language, all of it well-deserved. Read the whole thing.

EUROPE: All cars to be fitted with speed-limiting AI tech thanks to new EU rules.

The new gadget can, in some cases, slow the vehicle down for you if it catches you breaking the speed limit.

Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems became a legal requirement for motors across the EU as a law passed two years ago came into effect on July 7.

ISAs make use of AI, GPS data and even onboard cameras to assess your speed in real time as you drive along.

The system will then intervene if you go above the limit it has worked out for the road you are on.

For example, the system can assess things like road markings to determine whether you are in a 20mph or 30mph zone.

From there, there are three types of ISA which firms could opt to install, with each offering different levels of intervention.

“Assistance” is a funny way to spell “boss.”

WHAT DO WE WANT? NUCLEAR POWER. WHEN DO WE WANT IT? NOW: Google and Microsoft now each consume more power than some fairly big countries.

Tech giants Google and Microsoft each consumed 24 TWh each of electricity during 2023, surpassing the consumption of more than 100 countries, new research has claimed.

Analysis by Michael Thomas, shared on X, claims both Google and Microsoft consumed the same amount of energy as Azerbaijan, which has an estimated GDP of $78.7 billion. Google’s 2023 revenue stood at $307.4 billion, and Microsoft’s at $211.9 billion.

My takeaway from this is that whatever else you think of Google and Microsoft, they’re much more energy-efficient than most countries.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEFING: J.D. Vance Pick Continues Remarkable Campaign for Trump. “J.D. Vance has demonstrated quite a knack for rejecting nonsense from ambush media types. The Trump campaign can just wind him up and let him shut down all of the sabotage attempts. Trump can still have his moments, but mostly remain above the fray. It’s a great mix.”

WHAT WAS GLENN SAYING JUST YESTERDAY ABOUT BURYING THIS IMAGE LIKE THEY DID THE 9/11 FALLING MAN?

IT STILL PROMISES TO BE AN UNNECESSARILY TENSE COUPLE OF DAYS: Update on RNC Secret Service Protection. “Based on Cheatle’s statement, it appears the Secret Service decided some changes were in order.”

WHILE I WAS BUSY WITH THE WEEKEND’S BIGGEST STORY, I FORGOT TO COVER A COUPLE OF BAD SPACE ITEMS: SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets grounded by FAA, putting Space Coast missions on indefinite hold.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket fleet has been grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration after a Thursday launch from California produced an upper-stage failure that deployed a batch of Starlink satellites into an eccentric orbit.

The FAA grounding has immediate impact on the Space Coast’s launch schedule — which is off to a record-breaking pace this year. All told, 46 of the 50 missions thus far during 2024 have been Falcon 9 launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and adjacent NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

In a Friday statement, the FAA said, “an investigation is designed to further enhance public safety, determine the root cause of the event, and identify corrective actions to avoid it from happening again.”

“A return to flight is based on the FAA determining that any system, process, or procedure related to the mishap does not affect public safety. In addition, SpaceX may need to request and receive approval from the FAA to modify its license that incorporates any corrective actions and meet all other licensing requirements,” the statement said.

The Starlink satellites could not be salvaged and have since burned up on reentry.

And this: NASA’s $5 billion Europa Clipper mission may not be able to handle Jupiter’s radiation.

This past May, the mission team was told that parts similar to Europa Clipper’s transistors “were failing at lower radiation doses than expected,” NASA officials wrote in the Thursday update. Transistor testing is now underway at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which leads the mission, as well as the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, both of which are in Maryland.

The results aren’t exactly promising.

“Testing data obtained so far indicates some transistors are likely to fail in the high-radiation environment near Jupiter and its moon Europa because the parts are not as radiation-resistant as expected,” NASA officials wrote.

It’s been a rough few days for space launch and exploration fans.

YOU CAN TRY THIS YOURSELF:

I saw someone post the same Amazon search auto-fills and thought I’d try it myself. I used a fresh third-party browser install and from behind my VPN so none of my previous Amazon history would influence the results.

When Amazon’s own Prime Day comes in seventh behind Trump stuff, just the days before the big annual Prime Day sale begins, you know there’s something up.

SERIOUSLY, DON’T GET COCKY:

Trump is — was? — still within the margin of cheating in Pennsylvania and the Wisconsin Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of ballot harvesting and other shenanigans.

So don’t get cocky.

WHOA: Young Voters Abandoning the Dems in Droves. “The collapse began in 2016, the same year Donald Trump was elected to his first term in office — and, looking back, it seems almost inevitable. That was the year the American Left went from merely unhinged to flying off the rails like Doc Brown and Clara Clayton at the very end of ‘Back to the Future Part III.'”

CLASS ACT: ‘I’m not supposed to be here.’

It was obvious that Trump was still processing what had happened. Who wouldn’t be? It is something that will stay with him for the rest of his life. At the moment, he is grappling with the feeling that something very big has changed in his life and in the presidential race. When I asked him, “Does this change your campaign?” he immediately answered, “Yes.”

Trump explained that before Saturday night, he had finished the speech he planned to give later this week at the Republican convention. “I basically had a speech that was an unbelievable rip-roarer,” he said. “It was brutal — really good, really tough. [Last night] I threw it out. I think it would be very bad if I got up and started going wild about how horrible everybody is and how corrupt and crooked, even if it’s true. Had this not happened, we had a speech that was pretty well set that was extremely tough. Now, we have a speech that is more unifying.”

The originally written red meat would have been tasty but things have indeed changed since Saturday.

Trump could very well take the nation from what could have been one of the worst moments in our history to one of the great speeches in campaign history over the course of just five days.
