KRUISER, PAGLIA, VODKAPUNDIT PODCAST: President Trump Nails Convention Speech. “The RNC convention is a wrap, and PJ Media’s Stephen Kruiser and Stephen Green, aka VodkaPundit, along with Townhall and Triggered co-host Storm Paglia, to recap the final day, President Trump’s acceptance speech, the latest polls and whether or not we’ll see a Trump bump.”

CONGRESS IS NOT A GOOD STEWARD OF YOUR MONEY: NASA just announced in a blog post that SLS will cost 30% more.

After discussing this and other details, Lueders then rather casually let it slip that, “NASA also aligned the development costs for the SLS and Exploration Ground Systems programs through Artemis I and established new cost commitments.” The new development cost for SLS rocket is $9.1 billion, she said, and its budget for the initial ground systems to support the mission is now $2.4 billion.

Left unsaid: This represents a 33-percent increase for the rocket since 2017, when a “re-plan” of program estimated development costs for the rocket, including a single test flight, would be $7.17 billion. (This was detailed in a US General Accounting Office report published nearly a year ago.) This figure represents only direct development costs. NASA has received more than $20 billion from Congress since 2011 for SLS development and related activities.

At the time of the “re-plan” in 2017, NASA established a “December 2019-June 2020” date for the first test launch of the SLS rocket. This was a delay from earlier plans to launch it by the end of 2017.

Those are just the most recent figures. We’ll see what further fixes and modifications might be required after the “green run” test firing, currently penciled in for sometime this autumn.

And from an Ars Technica commenter:

Congress has paid $20b for a rocket that is still a year away from flight using 40+ year old designs, with a current projected cost of $40b for 4 flights, and a maximum possible payload SOME DAY of 130t. And every single stack that goes up is 100% disposable.

SpaceX is already flying grain silos in the middle of a desert for orders of magnitude less, on a rocket concept with never-seen-before engines, a fuel system which can harvest new fuel almost anywhere, and will have a 30% higher theoretical maximum payload. And every single stack that goes up comes back down and goes back up again.

Sigh.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: RNC Night 4—Trump Punches Hard, Gets First Round Knockout.

The speech was the biggest surprise of this presidency for me thus far, and it has been filled with surprises.

It was, in two words, extremely presidential. The media is lying about it already, of course, claiming that it was a dark speech that attacked Biden. It’s as if they are unaware that one of the primary tactics in any election is for the candidates to say unflattering things about one another. They’re being absolute children and it’s becoming more tedious than ever.

While he did tout his accomplishments — another normal campaign tactic which the press is pretending Trump invented — he didn’t do it with the signature Trump bombast. He took everything down a notch.

There were plenty of barbs aimed at all the right people, but he took a lot off of his fastball and struck them out with a change-up.

Like great pitchers do.

CHINA IS ASSHOLE: National security law: arrested Hong Kong activist among group caught by China’s coastguard while fleeing to Taiwan, sources confirm. “Andy Li, who was arrested for alleged collusion with foreign forces and money laundering in a police swoop on August 10, was detained in mainland China on suspicion of ‘unlawfully crossing the border,’ along with others caught on the boat.”

Li has been speaking up against Beijing for years, but this new “national security” law allows for Hong Kongers to be tried in Beijing’s kangaroo courts, rather than in front of Hong Kong juries. No wonder he tried to flee.

THIS IS IT: Night 4: Liveblogging the 2020 Republican National Convention.

UPDATE: A friend on Facebook comments:

Faced with the need for a dispersed convention, the Democrats chose to visually and rhetorically emphasize the situationally coerced quality of it all. Grainy Zoom conference calls, staged shots emphasizing cavernous emptiness, apologetic second-tier celebrity emcees, virtue-signaling mask wearing, et cetera. It was all grim, threatening atmospherics, and the celebratory culmination — the masked nominees strolling to receive the accolades of a large and darkened parking lot — displayed as bathos rather than triumph.

The party of Hollywood was handed what should have been its most natural task — excel on television! — and fumbled it.

This week, we are at the close of four days of Republican conventioneering. Set aside what you think of the substance of it, or that of its counterpart. Look at production values and aesthetic. The RNC nailed it. Against the mystifying Democratic decision to consciously present its own second-best, a televised would-be convention, the Republicans discarded the old form altogether — and embraced the new one.

The DNC production was deliberately despite the medium. The RNC production was deliberately of the medium.

On the one hand, Trump produced a hugely successful reality TV show, so yeah. On the other hand, the Democrats are a subsidiary of Hollywood (or maybe vice versa) so you’d think they could have done as well.
