UNEXPECTEDLY: Predictable Train Wrecks on Crime and Immigration.

The most consequential effect of open immigration and lax criminal enforcement is to undermine the safe, stable environment law-abiding citizens need to go about their lives, free from predation. Providing that environment — and signaling clearly that you intend to provide it — is the first responsibility of government.

That means punishing crimes. The goal is not vengeance. Nor is it solely to provide justice for the victims, important as that is. It is also to send a strong message to would-be criminals: Don’t do it. It’s not worth it. Right now, we are sending the wrong message and, by doing so, we are encouraging law breaking on a massive scale.

That encouragement is the unifying theme behind these policy disasters, one on the border, the other in our cities. The other unifying theme is their justification under the fashionable rubric of “social justice” and “equity.” What those feel-good arguments ignore is that our criminal laws are democratic efforts to preserve personal safety and community integrity. Failing in those responsibilities harms all law-abiding citizens.

Mission accomplished.

THIS IS GOING TO BE A MAJOR CONUNDRUM FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE: As a crop, cannabis has enormous carbon emissions.

I’m guessing that “pot smokers” and “climate alarmists” are two Venn circles with a lot of overlap.

TESTING: Elon Musk reveals why the SN10 Starship exploded. “For a short while after SpaceX’s SN10 Starship touched down on March 3rd, it seemed like the prototype made it out of its test flight unscathed. The vehicle exploded on its landing pad around a minute later, though, creating a massive inferno like its predecessors did. Now, Elon Musk has revealed what went wrong in responses sent to followers on Twitter. The SpaceX chief said the SN10 engine was low on thrust probably due to ‘partial helium ingestion from [the] fuel header tank’ and that the impact crushed the rocket’s legs and part of its skirt. SpaceX is now working on multiple fixes for the issue so that it doesn’t affect SN10’s successor, the SN11, anymore.”

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Democrat/Labor Alliance Is a Commie Nightmare for America. “Private sector union membership has been cratering for a very long time. Public sector unions (which should be illegal) are doing all right, especially in states with no right-to-work laws. Union membership only thrives with coercion. This bill is one big strong arm play.”

GOVERNMENT: If Social Security were a private retirement fund, we’d sue.

All that money you’ve poured into the Social Security trust fund over the years earned less than 1% during 2020, the funds’ administrators have revealed.

The S&P 500 index SPX, +0.60% ? Try 18%.

Even a simple balanced fund of U.S. stocks and bonds, such as the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund VBIAX, +1.08%, earned 16%.

And the giant pension and investment fund run by the government of Norway earned 10.9%.

The returns earned by Social Security is the scandal that keeps on taking. The previous year, the Norwegian pension fund gained 20%, the balanced index fund 22%, and the S&P 500 31%.

Your and my Social Security dollars? Just 2.2%.

Why should Congress care what happens to your money once they have it to spend?

CALIFORNIA AB-5 GOING NATIONWIDE: The federal labor legislation that would kill my livelihood.

In early February, Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.), with dozens of cosponsors, introduced the Protecting the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act) of 2021. Backed by labor unions, opposed by industry groups, and dubbed by Jacobin the “most ambitious labor law reform bill in generations,” the PRO Act has chiefly gotten attention for its import for union organizing. But that’s not all the bill does.

The PRO Act is also concerned with how freelancers like me are classified as workers. As written, it’s intended to force companies to hire us as employees — with all the benefits, like insurance and vacation time, that entails — rather than as independent contractors. That won’t happen. If this legislation passes as-is, it will instead destroy my livelihood by making all my work contracts illegal.

Needless to say, I’m against it. And I’m worried, because the PRO Act has enthusiastic support within the Democratic Party, which controls both houses of Congress. Worse yet, President Biden has explicitly endorsed the exact part of the bill that would put me out of work.

As a contract worker myself — by longstanding preference, I’d add — I’m deeply concerned about this bill becoming law and effectively outlawing my freedom to contract.
