MARK STEYN: Moving On to the Next Phase.

The most important thing I linked to this week was an interview by onetime Steyn Show guest Louise Perry with David Betz, Professor of War in the Modern World at King’s College, London. If you’re not into links, well, here’s the whole thing:

Louise has the voice of a lovely English rose and Professor Betz is a mild-mannered soft-spoken Canadian, and such accents calmly discussing the road to “civil war” makes it far more unsettling than if it were just another blowhard roaring from his cyber-bunker. Especially when Mr Betz, who has advised governments around the Commonwealth on “counter-terrorism”, says right at the end that it’s too late to prevent it, and it’s time to work on mitigation strategies to secure the nation’s great artistic treasures and its nuclear weapons.

The idea that Britain and France are either a) lost or b) doomed to civic collapse would be dismissed by those whose principal concerns are capital gains and school fees. But both of these superficially stable nations have made recent territorial adjustments: the United Kingdom’s present borders date all the way back to, oh, 1922, and until the Sixties French Algeria was divided into administrative départements no different from Provence or Normandy and inhabiting much the same psychological space in the national consciousness: in 1962 the million who fled, in a few months, from Algeria to metropolitan France was the biggest population displacement in Europe since the Second World War. As Professor Betz observes, during the thirty years of the Irish “Troubles” a few hundred terrorists were able to carry out destabilising operations at the highest levels of the British state, killing prominent politicians and members of the Royal Family, blowing up the Prime Minister’s hotel, and putting a rocket through a Downing Street window.

Go back to the riots over the three girls slaughtered in Southport last summer and the ensuing lies by Starmer about who did it and why. The Troubles were maintained by a couple of hundred active insurgents drawn from a broader population of half-a-million “nationalists” in Northern Ireland. If you take seriously the bollocks peddled by the government and its media poodles, the biggest threat to social tranquility in the UK comes not from “refugees” or ongoing Islamisation but from the “far right”. Okay. If you say so. In that case, do the math: England has a population a hundred times the size of Ulster’s Catholic community. A take-up rate equivalent to the IRA’s would be tens of thousands.

By doing what the uniparty has done in Germany, France, Austria, the Netherlands, etc, the state is not only delegitimising itself, but teaching the citizenry that nothing can be changed through peaceful civic participation. Eventually enough of them will draw the logical conclusions of that lesson.

Before the end of this decade, we will be in an entirely new phase.

This headline, which arrived shortly after Steyn’s article is a reminder that England as it was once known is essentially over: The last surviving Battle of Britain Pilot, John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway DFC, passes away. Hemingway was 105.

COMING HOME: NASA to Provide Live Coverage of Crew-9 Return, Splashdown. “NASA will provide live coverage of the agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 return to Earth from the International Space Station, beginning with Dragon spacecraft hatch closure preparations at 10:45 p.m. EDT Monday, March 17.”

PAULA BOLYARD: We Were ‘Badly Misled’ on Covid Lab Leak. But Guess Who’s to Blame? “This wasn’t just a case of reporters being tricked into dismissing the lab leak theory — it was a combination of willful blindness and disinformation.”

With a heavy dose of Cancel for those who refused to parrot the party line.

ANSWERING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Is It Bad to Store Magazines Fully Loaded? “Spring steel is made of a very specific alloy called music wire, and it is designed to stay in a permanent state of stress. YES, you should leave your magazines loaded! The act of loading and unloading is actually worse for your magazine springs.”

GEORGE MF WASHINGTON: The ‘Heroes’ of the Fourth Estate.

Other than Westerns, Courtroom Dramas and Cop Thrillers, this was one of Hollywood’s favorite go-to genres. They were so popular in the Biz that we used to have a joke that if you were serious about getting nominated for an Oscar, your best bet was to make a movie about the Holocaust or a Journalist. Many of the movies in that latter category, “All The President’s Men”, “The Insider”, “The Killing Fields” and “Absence of Malice” to name just a few, are among the finest films ever made and were indeed nominated for a slew of Oscars.

As the 2000’s turned into the 2020’s and Hollywood jettisoned one classic genre after another in the pursuit of cost savings and corporate billion dollar blockbuster-making, the heroic Journalist story remained one of the few classic adult drama genres that Hollywood seemed unable to quit. There is no doubt in my mind that this was because, in the character of the heroic journalist bravely speaking truth to power, Hollywood saw themselves… unafraid storytellers courageously pushing forbidden narratives out into a hopelessly troglodytic America that didn’t want to hear them.

There’s just one problem with that… here at the beginning of 2025, journalists occupy a space on the popularity spectrum somewhere between pond scum and crotch rot.

Hollywood, too — and do read the whole thing.

THIS IS HOW DEMS GROOM LIFELONG POLITICIANS: Raúl Grijalva’s Leftist Legacy of Weaponized School Boards. “Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) died this past Thursday, succumbing to the cancer that he had been belatedly diagnosed with last year (my Townhall colleague Rebecca Downs covered that here). He was my congressman and a radical leftist. I’m not here to vent, however. That’s because Grijalva also taught me one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in forty-plus years of political activism.”

IT WOULD TAKE HEART OF STONE NOT TO LAUGH:

Yes, this is exactly what I voted for.

TERRORISTIC THREATS:

IF YOUR SCHADENBONER LASTS MORE THAN FOUR HOURS, CONSULT A DOCTOR:

There’s been an awful lot of “Democrat hoisted by his own petard” stories lately, and it’s a good time to be alive.

AMERICA’S NEWSPAPER OF RECORD:

SCOTT JENNINGS EXPOSES DEMS’ FILIBUSTER HYPOCRISY, BREAKS CNN PANEL:

Once again, CNN’s Scott Jennings says the one thing exposing leftist hypocrisy that causes a segment to go up in smoke. This time, he did it on CNN’s State of the Union.

Watch as Jennings “thanks” Chuck Schumer for defeating the “racist Jim Crow filibuster”, forcing host Jake Tapper to explain his joke to the viewing audience.

Exit quote: “Scott’s having a lot of fun today:”

Speaking of CNN:

I’m so old, I can remember when Bill Kristol was a conservative. Flashbacks: Emerald Robinson: I Confess — It Was I Who Mercy-Killed The Weekly Standard. As Ace of Spades writes, “This whole article is worth reading, but let me cut to the really juicy part. The revelation of secrets.”

Related: Bill Kristol and the political defector grift.

Seriously, how many times is the press going to re-run the story of a frustrated Kristol turning his back on the party? In 2017 he advocated replacing Republican voters with immigrants. That fall, he donated to Virginia governor Ralph Northam’s campaign. He literally announced just three months ago that he’s ‘not really’ a Republican, hadn’t voted for a Republican in years, and didn’t plan to vote for a Republican for several years to come at least. He even called for people to vote against good Republicans in the House and Senate, because it would risk raising the power of the party as a whole.

Since the days of Richard Nixon, you can make a very good living in the DNC-MSM media bubble by being a prominent Republican who never votes for Republicans.

UPDATE:

PUBLIUS:

The most brilliant part of the Tren de Aragua deportation flight is that it forced Democrats to defend and uphold literal narco-terrorists who have murdered Americans and destroyed the neighborhoods of working class voters.

I am 100% sure that the Trump team did a careful mission analysis on the best way to get Dems to embarrass themselves more than usual, right down to the careful timing of having the judge impose his TRO while the plane was in international airspace.

This was a carefully planned operation that was executed to perfection.

Kudos to the entire Trump team.

Indeed.

Of course, it helps that the Democrats have a destructive addiction to the 20% side of a whole host of 80/20 issues.

(Typo fixed — thanks!)

FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY: The gyms and fitness chains closed during the coronavirus pandemic — and what some are offering instead.

There’s nothing like a good workout to combat coronavirus-related anxieties — but are trips to the gym safe amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic?

While there’s no need to throw down the dumbbell for good, some gyms are closing as a precautionary measure during the ongoing outbreak. Read on for a list of national chains and fitness studios that have shut their doors (for the time being) to fight the spread of the virus.

Most of the gyms announced “two week” closures, which in reality, often went on for months. 24-Hour Fitness, since reopened, declared bankruptcy on June 15th, 2020.

READ MELISSA OLTHOFF’S FORLORN HOPE after meeting her at a con a couple of weeks ago. Finished it last night: Quite good, and I found myself thinking about the characters and events at the gym today, which is always a good sign.
