“JUNK MAIL BALLOTS.” A friend makes the point that we’re not talking about voting by mail like absentee voting, where a voter has to request an absentee ballot. It’s “junk mail voting” where the stuff is, like junk mail, essentially addressed to “Voter XX or current resident.” It has none of the safeguards that you see with grandma’s absentee ballots.

Good point, and good term.

IT’S NOT RACISM WHEN DEMOCRATS DO IT: Joe Kennedy III appears with activist who launched racist diatribe against GOP candidate.

The sole opponent to US Rep. Ayanna Pressley challenged Joseph Kennedy III at a press event on Monday demanding to know why he was accepting support from a woman who slammed her interracial marriage in a crude and viral rant last month.

Republican congressional candidate Rayla Campbell was escorted from the event at City Hall Plaza in Boston by police after she erupted into screams demanding to know why Kennedy, who is in a heated race for the Senate against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, was standing alongside Roxbury community activist Monica Cannon-Grant.

“He’s talking about racial justice and it’s pretty ironic that he’s got Monica Cannon-Grant and she’s standing right there behind him. I just couldn’t believe he wouldn’t say anything or disavow this woman,” Campbell told the Herald.

In a widely disseminated video from July, Cannon-Grant questioned Campbell’s blackness, repeatedly called Campbell a “heifer” and made frequent crude references to Campbell’s white husband and their sex life.

Disgraceful, and also typical.

TIME TO END THE LOCKDOWN LUNACY: J.B. Handley clearly, logically and cogently argues that the science shows we have lost our collective minds over Covid. And that’s hugely significant because we should all “follow the science,” right? Right?

Now, Handley wrote this longish post on July 28, so why am I encouraging you to read it today? Well, when you reach the point in his essay where he explains the significance of August 25th, it will all make sense.

PUBLIC HEALTH’S TREATMENT OF THIS PANDEMIC HAS BEEN A DEBACLE ON ALL LEVELS: The Fun Police Should Stand Down: Social gatherings provoke moral indignation—but bringing in law enforcement will promote injustice, not reduce infections.

As long as any clusters of infections are linked to parties, public-health officials will need to figure out how to help people avoid these dangers. Public health is a service industry, and it cannot serve customers without first trying to understand them. Instead of yelling at people for being careless and selfish—a perfectly understandable reaction—let’s start by asking why people are partying.

The end of the coronavirus pandemic is not, unfortunately, nigh. As these months drag on, people are seeking out social contact not out of selfishness but because, like going to the grocery store, human connection is an essential activity. Americans are experiencing a pervasive, long-term collective trauma, and our endurance will come from the relationships we’re able to sustain during the pandemic. Social capital—that is, the norms, values, and connections that people share—is an important determinant of how well they can weather and recover from a crisis. If public-health professionals want Americans to persist, they need to adopt messaging and policies that minimize infection while also maximizing resilience and well-being. Instead of turning partygoers into criminals, officials can offer safer ways for people to stay connected—and support struggling businesses in the process—by opening, redesigning, and loosening restrictions on the use of outdoor spaces. . . . The combination of criminalization and unscientific moralism is ineffective and counterproductive, and often leads authorities to take actions that may yield more infection.

It’s also rapidly robbing public health officials of any moral authority. But people tend to be control freaks in this field, and they mostly hear from angry, control-obsessed Karens.

NO. IT’S MUCH WORSE. IN THE MINORITY REPORT THERE WAS SOME REASON TO BELIEVE PEOPLE WOULD COMMIT CRIMES. THE TRUTH IS AS FAR AS WE CAN TELL BEING “UNWANTED” DOESN’T PREDISPOSE ANYONE TO BE A CRIMINAL. OR AT LEAST, SO FAR, HUSBAND AND I HAVE KEPT CLEAR OF IT. AS HAVE MILLIONS OF OTHER “ACCIDENTAL” KIDS. IN FACT, I’D BET YOU, ALMOST ALL OF US:  Austin is trying to deter crime the ‘Minority Report’ way.

Guys, seriously. Leonardo DaVinci was not only unwanted, but a bastard. Same for Alexander Hamilton. The idea that cutting down on unwanted children cuts down on crime is stupid. Also insane.

PEOPLE ARE INDIVIDUALS. NOT MEMBERS OF A GROUP.  AND THE NAME FOR ANYONE WHO BELIEVES IN COLLECTIVE GUILT THAT STRETCHES ACROSS HISTORY FROM PEOPLE WHO MIGHT LOOK VAGUELY LIKE YOU TO YOU NOW IS “RACIST”. ALSO AN IDIOT. SO, AN IDIOT RACIST: Individual Lives Matter.
