OH, COME ON: FBI studies two broken cameras outside cell where Epstein died.

The two cameras were within view of the Manhattan jail cell where he was found dead on Aug. 10. A source earlier told Reuters two jail guards failed to follow a procedure overnight to make separate checks on all prisoners every 30 minutes.

He had been taken off suicide watch prior to his death.

The cameras were sent to Quantico, Virginia, site of a major FBI crime lab where agents and forensic scientists analyze evidence.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that at least one camera in the hallway outside Epstein’s cell had footage that was unusable. The newspaper said there was other usable footage captured in the area.

The country’s in the very best of hands.

THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO MY LIVER SINCE I STARTED TAKING N.A.C.: Democratic debate stage to shrink barring last-minute shock.

Ahead of Wednesday night’s deadline to qualify for the ABC News debate in Houston on Sept. 12, only 10 candidates have met both the polling and fundraising thresholds, according to POLITICO’s tracking of the process. Unlike the first two debates, if 10 or fewer candidates qualify, they will all appear together on one night.

If this holds, it would mark the first time in the still-fledgling Democratic race that all the top candidates debated together. The large field and random assignments had, thus far, prevented Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts from appearing with former Vice President Joe Biden or Sen. Kamala Harris of California.

For a time, it appeared billionaire self-funder Tom Steyer would disrupt that. He crossed the fundraising threshold — 130,000 unique donors — two weeks ago, and he sits on the precipice of the polling threshold, having earned 2 percent in three surveys by pollsters approved by the Democratic National Committee.

But the fourth poll — which would make Steyer the 11th qualified candidate and result in the debate being split over two nights — has been elusive.

For a short while it looked like Steyer might be the Dem’s golden boy, but he can’t even buy a podium at the debate.

NEWS YOU CAN USE*: How to baffle the boycott brigade.

In 2016 I was publishing stories in mainstream media that, while not overtly in support of either side, refused to mindlessly regurgitate the lies media was telling about Trump supporters. I was curious about them, not hateful. Activists and media personalities picked up on this. Sensing I might have some shameful, hidden right-wing views, they swarmed, calling for a boycott of the magazine I worked for, for me to be fired, and sent death threats.

I saw this happen to other journalists. They’d immediately cave, issue a disingenuous apology and self-flagellate for a few days. They’re probably still on a list somewhere. But I never did, and the harassment never fully ended until, months later, I finally dropped a nuke of a story in which I condemned the left completely and came out as a conservative. To my surprise, the mob disappeared. Progressive bullies were silent, nowhere to be found. Suddenly I wasn’t a Nazi who needed to confess or die, but just worthy of an occasional eyeroll emoji from a left-wing blogger

I hope this may be instructive to people, especially business owners. People cowering in the conservative closet message me all the time, asking for advice. There was a time I told them, unless they want to be fired from their jobs and lose all their friends, they’d better keep quiet. I no longer feel that way. Not only are they doing a great disservice to their country and fellow conservatives, but, sometimes, shrugging and saying ‘so what?’ is the most powerful weapon against the left. They’re never expecting it.

HMM: Conrad Black: 2020 Vote Looks Like 1972 — With No Watergate.

It is exquisite that Mr. Trump has used the hard-left social press to outmaneuver the traditional media kingmakers and now nods approvingly as Senators Warren and Sanders and their allies attack the new media cartel, whose leading figures are almost as hostile to the president as are those seeking the Democratic nomination against him next year.

Whatever anyone might think of the president’s public personality, his progress toward his goal of radically altering the government and shattering or co-opting the long-tenured OBushinton political establishment has been a relentless and unstoppable juggernaut. His candidacy was mocked, his chances of election were minimized, his ability to avoid impeachment was artificially maintained in doubt for over two years, and the idea that he will be easy to defeat next year is only starting to expire, strangled by facts.

The country is prosperous and the attempt to orchestrate economic pessimism will be no more successful than all the bunk about misogyny, incitements to violence, “racially charged” demagogy, corruption, treason, chaos in the White House, and the rest of it.

THIS CASE MIGHT BE THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR SANCTUARY POLICIES: Judicial Watch has filed suit in California Superior Court seeking a permanent injunction against Santa Clara County’s version of sanctuary policy.

The litigation was prompted by the murder of a 59-year-old resident, allegedly by an illegal immigrant with a lengthy criminal record in the U.S. Six times the feds asked the locals to hold the guy until they could take him into custody, but county officials refused. Keep an eye on this one and a similar suit Judicial Watch is pursuing in San Francisco in the wake of the Kate Steinle murder.

OPEN THREAD: You know what to do.

WELL, THIS IS THE 21ST CENTURY, YOU KNOW: NASA Just Activated Its Deep Space Atomic Clock. Though I first read that as “atomic cloak,” which would have been cooler, but I don’t think those are scheduled until the latter part of the century.

IT’S COME TO THIS: Beto O’Rourke Campaign Claims Breitbart.com Reporter Joel Pollak Ejected to Protect Black Students. “A Breitbart spokesperson hit back shortly after the O’Rourke campaign’s statement: ‘The false accusation that Breitbart is racist, or that its award-winning reporter — an Orthodox Jew, married to a black woman who serves in the military — is either racist or would make anyone at a black university uncomfortable is absurd. The irony of Mr. O’Rourke — who has stated himself that he is the beneficiary of ‘white privilege’ — purporting to decide for black students who should be banned from events that are open to the press, or what they should feel, is not lost on us.’”

As Bryan Preston noted in 2012 when CNN’s Jay Thomas tried to play the race card on Pollak, “Meet Julia Pollak… She’s from South Africa, actually, and her mother was a political appointee of none other than Nelson Mandela. Here she is, in video made when Pollak ran for Congress.”

Fortunately, today’s racism by the O’Rourke campaign had a happy ending: Beto O’Rourke Campaign: Breitbart Won’t Be Banned from More Events.

Of course, the number of events remaining may or may not be all that many: Beto O’Rourke Is Still Polling In Bottom Tier of Candidates After His El Paso Response.

Exit questions: “That’s pretty racist; [O’Rourke] needs to shield them from [Pollak] because they can’t take care of themselves? Because you are threat to them? Or because?”

A FRIEND IN GEORGIA WHO KNOWS PEOPLE says that Nick Ayers is on the short list to replace Johnny Isakson.

UPDATE: And now The Hill reports that Ayers says he’s not in the running.
