STEPHEN L. CARTER: Billy Graham’s Record on Race Was Both Ahead and Of His Time:
The evangelist’s actions as a racial moderate were consistent with his theology of personal salvation.

There’s a nice story about Billy Graham’s reaction when he arrived to preach at a revival meeting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1953. Upon reaching the site, he found ropes marking off a separate section for black congregants. He removed them. “Either these ropes stay down,” Graham told his hosts, “or you can go on and have the revival without me.”

The great evangelist, who died this week at the age of 99, fully deserves the accolades he has received from across the political spectrum. Yet mixed in with the praise of Graham has been a tone of reservation, because — it is said — the man who preached to over 200 million people in his career did not speak enough about race when his words would have made a difference. There is limited merit to this contention. The actual history is complicated, a tale of growth and retrenchment and further growth. Given the era in which Graham came of age, what he accomplished is admirable.

Let’s begin with the obvious: Graham grew up when he grew up. In college, he was influenced by “Up From the Ape” by the Harvard anthropologist Earnest Hooton. The book is not mainly about race — it’s about evolution — but the pages nevertheless abound in racial stereotypes. Yet Hooton is also quite clear that there is no basis for the conclusion that any race is more intelligent on average than any other. For the era, this was an enormous advance.

TO SERVE AND PROTECT: “Hostages first. What that means is that I must be willing to die in order to protect hostages.”

Somebody send a copy of this to the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.

THAT’S BECAUSE THOSE 4 BROWARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARE PATHETIC LOSERS WHO MAKE LAW ENFORCEMENT LOOK BAD. LIKE THEIR BOSS, SHERIFF SCOTT ISRAEL DOES. Sources: Coral Springs police upset at some Broward deputies for not entering school.

You don’t need guns, they told me. Civilized people know the police will protect them, they told me. Anything else is just gun crazy paranoia, they said.

Plus: “The resentment among Coral Springs officials toward Broward County officials about what they perceived to be a dereliction of duty may have reached a boiling point at a vigil the night of February 15, where, in front of dozens of others, Coral Springs City Manager Mike Goodrum confronted Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. A source familiar with the conversation tells CNN that Goodrum was upset that the Broward deputies had remained outside the school while kids inside could have been bleeding out, among other reasons.”

Note that this was before CNN’s shameful “Town Hall,” but CNN either didn’t have a clue, or was happy not to share the news with its viewers while giving that contemptible weasel, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, a platform to posture and blame others.

But then, CNN is to journalism what those Broward deputies are to law enforcement: A contemptible example of failure. After that “Town Hall,” CNN needs to do a primetime mea culpa and apology. It won’t.

CAKEWALK SONAR LIVES — BANDLAB TECHNOLOGIES ACQUIRES CAKEWALK BRAND FROM GIBSON:

[Updated at 17.20pm GMT to reflect CEO Meng Kuok’s statement about not charging existing SONAR customers again for cross-grades and also BandLab’s hiring of Cakewalk personnel]

BandLab Technologies — the company behind social music platform BandLab, as well as Rolling Stone magazine, Mono cases, Harmony Guitars and more — have today announced the acquisition of certain assets and the complete set of intellectual property of Cakewalk Inc. from Gibson Brands.

CEO of BandLab Technologies, Meng Ru Kuok said, “The teams at both Gibson and BandLab felt that Cakewalk’s products deserved a new home where development could continue. We are pleased to be supporting Cakewalk’s passionate community of creators to ensure they have access to the best possible features and music products under the BandLab Technologies banner.”

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for Sonar users since November 2017 when previous owners Gibson unexpectedly announced that they were ceasing development of the popular Windows-based DAW. This latest news will come as a huge relief to those who rely on Sonar and other Cakewalk products such as the Z3TA +2 and Rapture Pro synths. There’s every reason to be optimistic about the future of Sonar after this announcement. BandLab have past form in acquiring and developing audio technologies — something they’ve done already with AudioStretch, an iOS app that slows down audio and video without any change to pitch for transcription and music learning.

As someone who has used Sonar as my primary digital audio workstation software since around 2000, for music, podcasts, and PJM’s late, lamented Sirius-XM show, I was genuinely stunned when Gibson unceremoniously pulled the plug on Cakewalk right around Thanksgiving of last year, after acquiring the company in 2013. I don’t know anything about BrandLab other than what is reported above, but I’m glad somebody bought the Cakewalk brand, which dates back to 1987.

Related: Speaking of Gibson, “S&P lowered its rating for Gibson to CCC-minus, from the already very low rating of CCC. S&P says a CCC-minus rating indicates that a default is imminent,” CNN reports, adding, “The company has $145 million in outstanding bank loans that will come due on July 23 and another $377 million of outstanding secured notes maturing on August 1. ‘With multiple maturities looming and operating weakness ongoing, we believe Nashville-based Gibson Brands could default on its debt obligations over the next six months,’ said S&P in a report from analyst Francis Cusimano Jr.”

BULLIED NFL LINEMAN POSTS SHOTGUN PHOTO, FORCES HIGH SCHOOL TO CLOSE:

Former Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin posted a chilling Instagram story that forced a high school to close.

On Thursday, Martin caught the attention of school officials with a story that featured a photo of a shotgun and the names of former Dolphins teammates Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey as well as the Los Angeles-area high school, Harvard-Westlake, that Martin attended. The 28-year-old was taken into custody on Friday, ABC reported.

“When you’re a bully victim and a coward, your options are suicide or revenge,” Martin cryptically posted.

Martin became the victimized face of NFL bullying in 2013 when he charged teammates, namely fellow offensive lineman Incognito, with harsh treatment in the locker room.

The post comes a week after 17 students were killed by a gunman at Florida’s Stoneman Douglas High School.

I’m so old, I can remember when NFL players didn’t think of themselves as bullied victims or proselytizing “woke” SJWs.

FBI TIPSTER WARNED NIKOLAS CRUZ WAS ‘GOING TO EXPLODE’ AND SHOOT UP A SCHOOL WEEKS BEFORE PARKLAND MASSACRE:

“I don’t know how he got the debit card, but he did,” she said. “And he took it, and he bought all these rifles and ammunition and he posted pictures of them on the Instagram.”

Another of the woman’s stunning revelations: Cruz was obsessed with ISIS.

“He’s so into ISIS and, um, I’m afraid this is so something’s gonna happen,” she said, describing how Cruz would post pictures of himself dressed up as an Islamic terrorist. She also recounted how Cruz would frequently post pictures of himself donning a “Make America Great Again” cap.

The caller provided the agent with usernames for two of Cruz’s social media accounts, encouraging the FBI to comb through the pages.

“It’s alarming to see these pictures and to know what he’s capable of doing and what could happen,” she said. “He’s [been] thrown out of all these schools because he would pick up a chair and just throw it at somebody, a teacher or a student, because he didn’t like the way they were talking to him.”

The woman said she phoned in because she “wanted a clear conscience if he takes off and, and just starts shooting places up.”

At Hot Air, John Sexton links to a Wall Street Journal article that notes, “The caller described disturbing behavior by Mr. Cruz, including a propensity for cutting up frogs and, at least on one occasion, a bird.” Sexton adds, “He actually brought the bird into the kitchen and cut it up with a knife, reportedly saying, ‘I want to see what’s inside.’ The caller, who is only identified as a woman close to Cruz, also provided the FBI with Cruz’s various social media accounts so they could see for themselves what he was saying online. Obviously, this should have led the FBI to connect his YouTube account (username Nikolas Cruz) and the previous threat about becoming a school shooter.”
