ASKING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Golden Arches in North Korea?

Just a coincidence, I’m sure, but didn’t the Moscow McDonalds mark the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union?

I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANOTHER GODDAMN WORD ABOUT GLENN REYNOLDS’ CARBON FOOTPRINT: Claire McCaskill’s Private Plane Used on Campaign’s RV Tour Through Missouri.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.) said her campaign was “hitting the road” in an RV to tour the state, but public flight information indicates that travel also occurred on her million-dollar private plane.

The RV, named BigBlue by the campaign, was unveiled late last month by McCaskill, who said she was “very excited to hit the road” in it for an upcoming “Veterans for Claire” tour. The campaign kept a live blog of its three-day RV trip from May 29 to May 31, posting updates of its whereabouts.

Unmentioned on the blog is the role McCaskill’s private plane played on the trip. The aircraft is a single-engine turboprop valued on her financial disclosure forms at more than $1 million dollars.

Flashback to 2011, when Missouri’s unemployment rate was at 9.4 percent, and McCaskill was caught on camera cheering on bad economic news because it benefited the environment:

“Well, the good news is, our [carbon] emissions are way down because of the recession. I mean, really, if you want to find a silver lining in the cloud, the number that we were looking for [with cap and trade legislation] … we are well, well [ahead of our goal]…because we have had such a real drop in manufacturing output.”

Last week in the Wall Street Journal, Power Line’s Steve Hayward wrote “Climate Change Has Run Its Course,” because as, Glenn added in response, it became “blindingly obvious that the people who kept telling us it was a crisis weren’t acting like a crisis. They kept their big houses, SUVs full of bodyguards, and private jets. They’re like fervent abolitionists who never got around to freeing their own slaves.”

THE REVOLT AGAINST THE MASSES: UK justice minister resigns over Brexit ahead of key votes.

Conservative lawmaker Phillip Lee, who voted to remain in the EU in Britain’s 2016 referendum, resigned as a justice minister so he could vote against the government on a key measure.

Lee said “the people, economy and culture of my constituency will be affected negatively” by Britain’s EU departure, and it is “irresponsible to proceed as we are.”

He called for Brexit to be delayed, and for the public to get a second referendum on the terms of any exit deal.

It’s become tradition in Europe to hold as many votes as required to produce the desired outcome, and then none further.

UPDATE: May WINS vote but agrees to HUGE rebels concession giving EU upper-hand.

Know your place, deplorable peasant.

THE LONELY LIVES OF LEFTISTS. MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle: Yeah, I Scream Curses at Trump in the Shower.

Which makes a nice bookend to the 2009 New York Times columnist who dreamed of Obama appearing in her shower.

As Ben Shapiro noted, during the Tony Awards on Sunday, “alleged comedian Michael Ian Black tweeted out a bumper sticker that could easily be taken as the slogan for the modern Left: ‘Theater is political. Sports is political. Life is political. Be political.’”

In response, Shapiro writes:

But politics isn’t religion. It’s just a manifestation of values in the societal arena — a smaller arena than “life.” But when distinctions between individual and community degrade, everything becomes political. And so the Left promotes the idea that the personal is the political.

That was a slogan of the New Left during the 1960s; the idea was that life itself was a mere lived political experience, and that you should make your choices based on how they would play into societal structures. That’s a recipe for the destruction of communal space, an argument for the rise of a homogeneous societal standard based on the values of the cultural Left. And it means that we can’t live together. Someone has to win, and someone has to lose.

Believing that politics is everything* is a miserable way to live your life, and the result, among the many meltdowns on the left (beginning with patient zero of the contagion, Ben Rhodes’ vaporish election night response) is Ruhle’s confession of regularly freaking out.

* It sounds better in the original Italian, “Tutto all’interno dello stato, niente fuori dallo stato, nulla contro lo stato.”

HMM: Tesla’s Autopilot to get ‘full self-driving feature’ in August.

Autopilot, a form of advanced cruise control, handles some driving tasks and warns those behind the wheel they are always responsible for the vehicle’s safe operation. But a spate of recent crashes has brought the system under regulatory scrutiny.

“To date, Autopilot resources have rightly focused entirely on safety. With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features,” Musk tweeted here on Sunday, replying to a Twitter user.

Musk said the autopilot issue during lane-merging is better in the current software and will be fully fixed in the August update.

However, it was not clear what self-driving features would be included in the August update.

I’m not sure what I’ll do, the first time a Lyft comes to pick me up and there’s no one in the car.

AT SYRACUSE, TRUTH IS FAR LESS IMPORTANT THAN POLITICS: In the Washington Post, Syracuse law professor Greg Germain points out that the supposedly bigoted and racist language used by members of a fraternity suspended after video of a satirical roast got out was, uh, satirical:

A diverse group of 15 students (white, African American, Hispanic, Jewish, Muslim, Christian) who were pledging an engineering fraternity were asked to do a roast of the fraternity members for their joint amusement. The skits were crude: masturbation jokes; a politically conservative member was made to be an alt-right bigot who formed a competing fraternity to spread racism; a skit about sexually assaulting a fraternity member who was so controlled by his girlfriend that he could not move (patterned after a viral Brandon Rogers YouTube video). They were making fun of themselves and each other in outlandish ways using very crude language.

And Syracuse knew this perfectly well before it ruined these would-be engineers’ educational plans (and perhaps careers) for nothing. Take this example, from the affidavit of a black student that was filed in the suspended students’ lawsuit against Syracuse:

7. The second skit, entitled “The Trilogies of Tri Kappa,” was based on a satirical fraternity headed by a racist who was trying to integrate members of his “once great” fraternity to “his newly formed white empire.” This imaginary fraternity known as Tri Kappa was the “main enemy” of Theta Tau. This story was intended to lampoon one Chapter member who was a known supporter of President Trump and a political conservative.

8. The main character in the story was presented by the new member portraying him as a red neck, “back woods” figure, who forced his pledges to undergo an “anointing” by taking an oath to “always have hate in [his] heart” for “niggers,” “spics” and the “fuckin’ kikes.” The new member portraying the “pledge” taking the oath in the skit was Jewish. It was evident to everyone in attendance who knew the individuals involved and referenced in the story how ridiculous and satirical it was for one member to be portrayed as a rabid racist in our Chapter which had twenty eight members with racial, ethnic and religious minority backgrounds, including me and other African American and Hispanic members. Although I did not participate in this skit, I observed it and laughed along with everyone else because it was exaggerated satire showing the ignorance and absurdity of actual racists.

To be clear, not only did Syracuse punish these students for “offensive” speech despite promising them free speech (which is wrong), it stripped them of their educations for allegedly saying the exact opposite of what they were saying (which is both wrong and cruel). If you’d like to exercise your right to free speech and let Syracuse know your opinion about the situation, I know the students would appreciate the support.

SOUTH KOREAN FIREPOWER IN PLACE: A South Korean artillery battery fires a volley during an exercise held in September 2017. That was the month the Trump Administration increased economic sanctions on North Korea and the U.S., South Korean and Japanese militaries conducted daily “show of force” operations. A U.S. Army PFC took the South Korean arty picture during a major South Korean-U.S. joint exercise.

GOVERNMENT IS JUST A WORD FOR THE THINGS WE REFUSE TO DO TOGETHER UNTIL PRIVATE ENTERPRISE STEPS UP: Domino’s Pizza unveils U.S. infrastructure project filling potholes.

Domino’s is offering to fill ‘cracks, bumps and potholes’ to smooth road conditions. The initiative is aimed at ‘saving pizza.’ Picture courtesy of Domino’s Pizza.”Have you ever hit a pothole and instantly cringed?” Russell Weiner, president of Domino’s USA explains, stated in a press release. “We know that feeling is heightened when you’re bringing home a carryout order from your local Domino’s store. We don’t want to lose any great-tasting pizza to a pothole, ruining a wonderful meal.”

Domino’s has already been working with four municipalities to help repair potholes on roads, including Bartonville, Texas, Milford, Delaware, Athens, Georgia, and Burbank, California.

In Milford, Domino’s says it helped fix 40 potholes on 10 roads in 10 hours with four crew members.

“Facing an already harsher winter than usual for Delaware, this is an opportunity to get additional money to stretch our city’s limited resources,” said Eric Norenberg, city manager of the town, on the website.

Nice.

BEN SHAPIRO: No, Star Wars Isn’t Failing Because Of Hateful Trolls. It’s Failing Because Kathleen Kennedy Has Done A Garbage Job.

As Ace of Spades writes, “I do not expect Star Wars fans will enjoy being called sexist, racist, backwards and deserving of eternal defeat from the company that hopes to sell them tickets in the future. Hey bigots, racists, sexists and manbabies, buy tickets for our movies or else.”

Get woke, go broke. Insulting the audience worked out just swell for both Lady Ghostbusters – and Lady Clinton.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG? Philadelphia’s Affordable-Housing Plan: a Tax on New Buildings.

Philadelphia’s City Council is weighing a proposed 1% tax on construction to raise millions of dollars for affordable-housing programs, marking the latest push by a U.S. city to address rising residential costs.

The council could pass the new tax this week, setting up a possible showdown with Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney, whose administration warns the levy would hurt the city’s competitiveness as it vies to land Amazon.com Inc.’s second headquarters.

It would be much easier just to reduce regulatory and zoning burdens retarding affordable housing construction, but that would also reduce opportunities for corruption and graft.
