UH OH: Ireland Moves to Shore Up State-Owned Bank. “It’s not a good sign when the government has to intervene to prevent a run on a bank that is already owned by the government, but apparently, that’s what it’s doing with Anglo-Irish bank.”

NAVY SUBMARINES SUPPLIED WITH inferior steel?

DECLAN MCCULLAGH: Craigslist faces new wave of political attacks.

UPDATE: A reader emails:

It might be instructive to ‘follow the money’ – buying and selling on CraigsList keeps a lot of folks out of stores for lots of things, and the stores probably aren’t too happy about it. Case in point, two years ago we furnished our rental house in a week off CraigsList, for a nominal $800, couches, chairs, desks, filing cabinets, everything except a new mattress. Later, I replaced the kitchen stove for $125 (and half a day cleaning it up, it was from a repossession…) We’re moving now, and I’ve sold everything in three weeks for a paper profit. The only caveat to this story is that I own a ¾-ton pickup, so can haul stuff. This sort of thing has got to have all sorts of commercial enterprises grinding their teeth and wondering how to get rid of it. Using CraigsList is so easy, and the price is certainly right – I can’t believe newspapers even bother to publish want ads any more.

Good point.

BLUNT PULLS AHEAD OF CARNAHAN in the polls.

UPDATE: Missouri reader Stephen Clark writes:

Carnahan v Blunt is going to be an interesting race. The TV ads have been out since mid to early August. Right from the start it was negative. Carnahan has made no attempt at a positive message. The only place you see Carnahan and Obama in the same frame is in one of Blunt’s ads.

In my Missouri Congressional district, incumbent Jo Ann Emerson (R) is being challenged by young Tommy Sowers (son of the local newspaper owner). What’s interesting about this is that Emerson is reported to have 1.4 million while Sowers has a little over 1 million that he attributes to contributions from around the country – power of the internet and all; in fact I get popup ads for Sowers on your site. But here’s the thing: Sowers makes no mention of anything in the Democratic party’s agenda it’s all negative primarily attacking Emerson on her support for bank bailouts and the like. His bulk-mail ads feature him as a soldier serving in Iraq – weapon in hand, no less – on one side with him in full hunting mode taking dead aim with his over-and-under on the other side and advertising his fidelity to gun owner’s rights. . If you didn’t know better, you’d swear Sowers was running as a Republican.

Protective coloration. The funny thing is, since my ads are targeted I’ve never seen a Sowers ad here. Interesting.

TEN SIGNS THAT you’re too good for her. Articles like this make me glad I’m no longer dating . . . .

SOLAR PITFALLS: “The agreement became a centerpiece achievement of President Obama’s visit to China last November. Nearly a year later, the deal has not been completed and there is growing skepticism as to whether it will happen.”

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: Is Obama’s “Rich”-bashing getting too close to home?

Given that so many of the progressive pundits, professors, and professionals that supported Obama make over $200-250K, at some point his arbitrary economic Mason-Dixon line — dividing the bad 1 percent that pays 40 percent of income taxes from the good 40 percent who pay nothing — gets too close to home (especially in the New York/D.C. corridor, where a $250,000 gross income — given income, payroll, and state taxes — does not give one much of a house or prep school). I would expect some progressive pushback soon (e.g., He can’t mean us, can he?), resulting in something like, Why not put the top bracket at $500,000-1,000,000 and go after “them”?

Easiest thing to do is just extend the Bush tax cuts in toto.

READER RYAN KELLEY EMAILS to note that Amazon is now offering Free Amazon Prime for Parents. “And even though they call it a ‘mom’ special it’s for any caregiver.”

UPDATE: Reader Sean Malloy emails:

We have a toddler and an infant. Two months ago, I broke down and paid for Amazon Prime, and signed up for their “subscription” service that automatically delivers wipes, diapers, etc. at a discount.

Your post led me to sign up for Amazon Mom. Amazon even refunded me $75-ish of my previous Prime membership. Thanks, Glenn! If you’re ever in Austin, there’ll be a tumbler of nice Scotch waiting for you.

Well, I’m more of an Irish drinker, but thanks! Glad to be of help. And if you’ve got a toddler and an infant at the same time, you probably need the booze worse than I do . . . .

KLAVAN ON THE CULTURE: September 11th.

“COME ALONE. LEAVE AS A FAMILY. AGE NO BAR.” Plus this: “Reproduction is a civil right — nobody can bar you from bearing a child. We are not violating any laws of the land. Is it a home without children? In India, there is no woman who doesn’t want a child. Without taking a risk, no one would accomplish anything in this world.”

DOES THIS LAW DEGREE make my ass look fat? I always liked dating professional women, personally.
