THE ROAD TO HELL: How Barack Obama’s Good ‘Intentions’ Destroyed Libya.

Humanitarian crusaders trot out a variety of excuses to evade responsibility when their military interventions go awry. One frequent excuse is that a failure is because the U.S. and Western commitment to the mission was either inconsistent or insufficiently robust. Another popular explanation for disappointing results is that the effort would have succeeded if not for malign foreign interference. That rationale has become a favorite for the architects of the Syria debacle, who contend that Russia’s intervention beginning in 2015 saved Bashar al-Assad’s beleaguered, evil regime. One striking feature is the absence of diminished confidence that a more determined U.S.-led effort can succeed or that Washington has a moral and strategic obligation to make the attempt, even when the previous meddlesome policy has imploded.

When those excuses are not available, defenders of a failed humanitarian crusade insist that their intentions were good, and that they should be judged according to that standard. The good intentions dodge is perhaps the most maddening. Barack Obama seemed to recognize the inherent deficiency when he first met Samantha Power, an advocate of the “responsibility to protect” (R2P) doctrine, and a passionate proponent of U.S. involvement in multilateral military interventions for humanitarian goals. Obama reportedly praised Power’s book on the Rwanda genocide, but then he observed that it “seemed like malpractice to judge one’s prospects by one’s intentions, rather than making a strenuous effort to anticipate and weigh potential consequences.”

Obama was right, but he didn’t heed his own insights. Not only did he choose Power for a series of high-level policy posts when he became president, culminating in her appointment as ambassador to the United Nations, but he launched several disruptive, catastrophic interventions, most notably in Libya and Syria. The unintended negative results of those crusades continue to reverberate nearly a decade after the initial U.S. actions.

Curiously, CTL-F “Obama” in Reuters’ obit above brings up zero results. But as John Schindler wrote in 2016, “When his regime was collapsing in 2011, Hosni Mubarak, who had led Egypt for three decades as a loyal ally of America, was coldly abandoned by the White House. President Obama, against the advice of his own national security experts, cut Mubarak loose to the mob, refusing to take his panicked phone calls pleading for help.”

COMING SOON? Climate My Ass: The Green War on Freedom.

Writer and columnist James Delingpole and director Martin Durkin are teaming up to make a new documentary, Climate My Ass: The Green War on Freedom, and they’re currently in the fundraising stage. Per the film’s Indiegogo site: “The climate bandwagon has rolled on quite long enough. The ‘scientists’ and ‘science’ behind this nonsense have been exposed time and time again, but like some zombie ‘global warming’ refuses to lie down and die. What keeps it going is the political-bureaucratic, publicly funded monster, called the ‘Climate Consensus’. This is the monster which we aim to slay once and for all.” Donations to help produce Climate My Ass may be made here.

As I’m writing this, the Indiegogo page is being updated. When it’s back up, I plan on chipping in.

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: We Have Come for Your Children—Bernie Sanders Edition. “Democrats don’t really care about poor, put-upon working parents. They’re the ones who are taxing people to death and making them work that much in the first place, after all. The goal here is to get their grubby radical hands on the minds of children when they are most easily molded. They sell this horror by portraying the government as a benevolent caretaker that’s there to comfort you.”

WINNOWING THE FIELD: YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG. With 7 Candidates Debating In South Carolina, The Stage Is, Umm, Getting Larger? “We’re at the point in the election cycle — after three states have voted — that the debate stage is supposed to shrink, not grow. But apparently the 2020 Democratic field didn’t get the memo. After six candidates debated in Nevada last week, seven have now qualified for this Tuesday’s showdown in South Carolina. The debate will reunite the six debaters from last week’s heated fracas and also welcome philanthropist Tom Steyer back to the stage.”

More than anything this is an indication that the party elders no longer have the muscle or clout to winnow the field in advance. The GOP has the same problem, but the result was Trump and a lot of #winning. We still don’t know what the same chaos will produce on the Democratic side.

PRIVACY: Facebook’s privacy tools are riddled with missing data. “More than anything they’re a ploy to placate users’ concerns.”

The obvious holes in Facebook’s privacy data exports paint a picture of a company that aims to placate users’ concerns without actually doing anything to change its practices.

DATA LISTS ARE INCOMPLETE — The most pressing issue with Facebook’s downloadable privacy data is that it’s incomplete. Privacy International’s investigation tested the “Ads and Business” section on Facebook’s “Download Your Information” page, which purports to tell users which advertisers have been targeting them with ads.

The investigation found that the list of advertisers actually changes over time, seemingly at random. This essentially makes it impossible for users to develop a full understanding of which advertisers are using their data. In this sense, Facebook’s claims of transparency are inaccurate and misleading.

Well, Facebook.

JONATHAN COWAN AND MATT BENNETT: Stand up to Bernie or You – and We – All Lose. “These and many other aspects of his record would offer Trump a deadly arsenal with which to savage Sanders and down-ballot Democrats. Sanders’ notion that he is the most ‘electable’ among you is laughable on its face, which is why Republicans are campaigning for him. For every voter he ‘mobilizes’ with his radicalism, he will turn out at least one for Trump. Negative partisanship is powerful when the candidates are extreme. Loyal Democrats like us would support Sanders, but too many others wouldn’t.”

Curious how many of these “anti”-Sanders Democrats would still put party above country on November 3.

UGH: ‘The City Has Been Annihilated’: South Korea’s Coronavirus Epicenter Is a Virtual Ghost Town. “The country’s cases rise 25-fold in five days, as Seoul declares a ‘red alert,’ allowing it to block domestic travel among other measures.”

Since the start of the local outbreak traced back to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Daegu, this southeastern city of 2.4 million people has ground to a halt. The mayor has told people to stay indoors and avoid large gatherings. U.S. soldiers stationed in Daegu aren’t allowed to visit off-base establishments. South Korea’s military base is on a virtual lockdown.

Shincheonji’s eight-story church building remained closed after services were canceled there, as well as at more than 70 other locations across the country. Yellow-vested city officials sprayed disinfectant on the exterior of the church building. Shincheonji—which means “new heaven and earth” in Korean—on Sunday said it had shut its facilities and is doing everything in its power to reach its members.
