DECOUPLING, BIGLY: Trump Just Took the Nuclear Option on Huawei.
I linked to a similar report yesterday, but this one is more detailed:
On Monday the Commerce Department expanded its foreign-produced direct product rule to include situations “where U.S. software or technology is the basis for a foreign-produced item” that will be used by Huawei, or where the company is party to such a transaction, such as being an intermediary supplier.
There are dozens of steps in developing, manufacturing and installing chips in a device, with U.S. technology an integral part throughout. Synopsys Inc. and Cadence Design Systems Inc. make software used to design semiconductors; Lam Research Corp. and Applied Materials Inc. are major suppliers of manufacturing equipment — all four companies are based in Silicon Valley.
There are many more American technology providers crucial to the process. Remove just one, and any chip company will struggle to keep up. Removing them all would be akin to cutting off the oxygen. And if the new rule is to be strictly interpreted, then even the use of generalist technologies like PCs running on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows and Intel Corp. processors could be prohibited.
Huawei isn’t merely a Communist front corporation — it was built on the bones of Nortel, picked clean by Huawei in what amounted to state-sanctioned intellectual theft and espionage.
THAT’S NOT VERY SMART: AI Company Leaks Over 2.5M Medical Records. “The medical records are quite detailed and include names, insurance records, medical diagnosis notes, and payment records. It looks as though the data was sourced from insurance companies and relates to car accident claims and referrals for neck and spine injuries. The majority of the personal information is thought to be for individuals located in New York, with a total of 2,594,261 records exposed.”
JOANNE JACOBS: Democrats count on ‘rage moms’ to elect Biden.
Lots of moms (and dads) are frustrated, but I suspect the anger is going in many different directions.
In particular, parents are angry — fairly or unfairly — at their public school systems for ineffective remote lessons, ever-changing reopening plans and now more ineffective remote lessons on unreliable platforms. Some are angry at teachers’ unions, who’ve fought to keep schools closed and to limit their virtual work hours.
Trump has pushed for reopening schools, and if schools remain closed, giving federal funding to giving federal funding to parents so they “can send their child to the private, charter, religious, or home school of their choice.”
As parents scramble for alternatives, choice vouchers look appealing to those who’d never imagined a world of pods, hubs, microschools and homeschool co-ops.

CUE THE WORLD’S SMALLEST VIOLIN: Hong Kong leader admits U.S. sanctions impeding her credit card use.
Hong Kong’s leader says using her credit cards had been “hampered” by the United States slapping sanctions on her in response to a sweeping new security law in the financial hub. Chief Executive Carrie Lam was personally targeted, along with 10 other senior city officials, in the toughest U.S. action on Hong Kong since Beijing imposed the new law on the territory in late June.
The move by Washington freezes the American assets of the 11 officials and criminalises any financial transactions in the U.S.
The U.S. Treasury Department said Lam was sanctioned because she is “is directly responsible for implementing Beijing’s policies of suppression of freedom and democratic processes”.
Much like Lam herself, the “security” law was imposed on Hong Kong without the consent of the people.

DECOUPLING: US further tightens restrictions on Huawei’s access to chips. “Under new rules issued by the Commerce Department, any company that sells Huawei any products made anywhere with US technology will require a licence.”
KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: DNC Night One — I Think the Democrats Want Trump to Win. “A series of individually recorded remote speeches gave it a ‘Gee we’re sorry we can’t be there for your 90th birthday, Uncle Joe,’ vibe. That’s perfectly fine when it’s Uncle Joe’s 90th birthday but it’s not as fun if it’s Uncle Joe’s 90th attempt at becoming President of the United States. And Uncle Joe isn’t even at his own party to watch because he’s in the basement.”
It was actually worse than all that.
WAIT, I THOUGHT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE MODERATE: Joe Biden Wants a Green New Deal. “That plan includes Green New Deal-style proposals such as a ‘civilian climate corps’ and the mass retrofitting of America’s homes and vehicles. It also reproduces key features of President Barack Obama’s environmental agenda, including a focus on regulating consumer products and the return of the questionably effective ‘cash for clunkers’ program. And it incorporates many of the concerns of the Democratic Party’s activist base, including a separate plan for pursuing ‘environmental justice’ by targeting federal subsidies to minority groups.”
Biden’s three main Green Nude Eel planks are indoctrination training for young people (what, did the public schools miss a few?), destroying millions of perfectly good used cars, and backdoor reparations.
Some “moderate.”
WAIT, I THOUGHT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE MODERATE: Biden Has a Bold, Progressive Agenda. But Can He Pass It?
