BLUE CITY BLUES: Walgreens permanently closes two San Francisco stores. “A pair of Walgreens stores in San Francisco closed their doors for good on Monday. This comes after the retailer announced last month it would be shutting down five locations.”

PARTY OF THE LITTLE GUY: The second-biggest program in the Democrats’ spending plan gives billions to the rich. “We’re debating about whether to give lower- and middle-class families a thousand dollars more a year through the child tax credit, while giving upper-class families $10,000 or more through SALT… That’s counter to everything the Democrats have been saying Build Back Better is about and everything they said about the Trump tax cuts.”

BIDENFLATION: Rising Inflation Is Beginning to Worry Pentagon Leaders. “Their warnings arrive as Congress is more than a month late in passing the Pentagon’s annual budget, meaning spending is frozen at the prior year’s level.”

I’LL BELIEVE THIS WHEN I SEE IT: Imminent Vacancy Rumors Swirling on Capitol Hill. “Why is this a big deal? Because the House does not confirm normal nominees, but it does confirm vice presidential nominees. Does this have something to do with Kamala Harris?”

THE INTERCEPT: It’s Not Just White People: Democrats Are Losing Normal Voters of All Races.

The anger they felt at Democrats for the commonwealth’s Covid-19 school closure policy became further evidence of a cultural gap between these working people and Democratic elites, who broadly supported prolonged school closures while enjoying the opportunity to work remotely. Those with means decamped: Enrollment in Fairfax County schools dropped 5 percent, and fell by 3.9 percent and 3.4 percent in Arlington and Loudoun counties, respectively. Those who were left behind organized parent groups to pressure the schools to reopen. Though the groups tended to be nonpartisan or bipartisan at the start, Republican donors and conservative groups poured money and manpower into them, converting them into potent political weapons that blended anger at the closures with complaints about Democratic board members prioritizing trendy social justice issues — all of it aimed at the November elections.

“They keep saying ‘a strong return to school,’ but there’s no details,” said Saundra Davis on Fox News over the summer, co-founder of one large group, called the Open Fairfax Public Schools Coalition. “Their attention is on other things, like their pet projects and social justice issues, and the kids have been left to flounder and there’s still no plan for fall.”

“You’ll be surprised to know I’m a Democrat,” she said. “I’ve tried to warn them that there’s a bipartisan tidal wave coming their way. They don’t look us in the eye, they don’t write us back. If we can’t recall them one by one, there’s an election in November.” That fall, Davis cut an ad for Youngkin, citing his commitment to keep schools open as decisive.

Disdain is no way to win voters, and Woke Democrats just can’t hide theirs.

MAKING THE SAUSAGE: CBO Proves the Biden Administration Is Lying on Multiple Fronts. “The White House has begun bracing lawmakers for a disappointing estimate from the budget office, which is likely to find that the cost of the overall package will not be fully paid for with new tax revenue over the coming decade. Senior administration officials are urging lawmakers to disregard the budget office assessment, saying it is being overly conservative in its calculations.”

THE ECONOMIST: Why the situation on America’s southern border has become unmanageable. “Today the gap-riddled wall represents not only Mr Biden’s predecessor but also Mr Biden, who seems to know what he does not want—any more wall—but has yet to come up with a plan that is both “fair and humane”, which is what he promised on the campaign trail. The result is frustration from immigration advocates and people living close to the southern border, as well as a political headache. In the mid-term elections next year Republicans will accuse Democrats of presiding over chaos at the border. Democrats do not yet have an answer to this, in part because they do not realise the criticism has some truth.”

Some? It’s a crisis by design.

WHISTLEBLOWER: FBI Is Tracking Parents for Alleged ‘Threats’ Against School Officials. “According to a whistleblower email released by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, FBI counterterrorism officials are compiling and tracking investigations into so-called ‘threats’ against school boards and other school officials.”

KRUISER’S MORNING BRIEF: Let’s Hope We Survive the Rittenhouse Circus. “This trial has, of course, been far more politically charged than it should have been because the mainstream media pretty much tried it in the court of public opinion long before any charges were even filed. The MSM has been lying about this case from the get-go and it’s still doing so.”

JEFF GREENFIELD: Joe Biden’s Empty Inflation Toolbox.

Inflation has a unique power to kneecap a presidency. Incumbent presidents and their parties do not do well at all when inflation (and attempts to cure it) are on voters’ minds come election time. The gas pump, the supermarket check-out counter, the heating bill, the sticker on the windshield, provide — or seem to provide — powerful indictments against the party in charge.

If that’s not enough to unsettle the White House and its allies, consider this: Presidents have almost no power to ease the pain of inflation, and the voting public cuts presidents no slack at all because of that impotence.

Tell that to Ronald Reagan and Paul Volcker, who understood exactly how to wring inflation out of the economy — and did. They engineered a punishing recession in 1981, putting Reagan’s reelection at risk, but certain that there would be a resulting boom.

The difference today is that nobody has the political will to risk their comfy positions to do what needs to be done.
