HELEN TRIES IT: This week I had the pleasure of reading Professor Carol’s book Why Freshmen Fail: and How to Avoid It! I know you are no longer supposed to call college students freshman (it’s sexist and classist, yawn) but this is what makes Professor Carol’s book so refreshing. She lays out exactly in a non-PC straightforward manner for students and their parents how to make the most of the first year. She really gets how 18-year-olds think and has no qualms with helping them figure out if college is even the right choice in a chapter called “Why am I here?” She discusses “real life” and how it is often unfair even though students have been told by adults how everything is equal (yeah, sure). She has a chapter on how to get along with your professors by nodding, even if the nodding is insincere. Just this simple gesture can help a student earn a better standing in the class. My favorite chapter is “What Not to Say” that describes the PC atmosphere and how to maneuver it without losing your mind. I could have used this when I was in grad school. Get the book for your child, grandchild or as a gift for anyone you know going to college in the fall, it is really helpful. I have verified this listing at Helen’s Page. (Bumped)

HELEN TRIES IT: M. Fletcher Reynolds, an attorney and music theorist sent me a copy of his book The Basics of Copyright. The book is a guide for non-lawyers and is written in simple, lighthearted language for those of us who want to understand how copyright law works and how to make it work for what we do in daily life like snap photos on our iPhones. The book explains the difference between a patent, trademark and copyright law which I always found slightly confusing. It also has a chapter on fair use and a final chapter on how to avoid trouble if you want to use a photo, video or clip art. Throughout the book are short quizzes that help you know if you understand the material. They are simple and explained in a discussion section. I highly recommend this book if you use the web, have a website or just want to know more about copyright law. This listing is now verified.

DOES DAD LIKE GOLF? A fun gift would be James Y. Bartlett’s golf mystery series. (Bumped)

MEMORIAL DAY READING: I am reading Jake’s 8: A Hard Man Novel (The Hard Man Series) this weekend. It is one of Howard McEwen’s three books about men who lead really tough but adventurous lives which I find fascinating. This book is particularly good because before each chapter, there is a drink recipe from the author to accentuate the next section. So not only do you get a great series of stories but you learn how to make some great drinks. Jake tells the story of a man who punches his boss, gets fired and goes to work as a financial planner of sorts with a mysterious new boss who has him involved in all kinds of offbeat interactions with their clients. I highly recommend it.

UPDATE: Here is a video of Molly, the bartender, from the early section of the book sharing how to make her version of a classic Manhattan. (Bumped)
